I think Georgia fans had best brace themselves for a long, hard bad day Saturday. Georgia has good enough players but this is a coaching mismatch on par with the Spurrier-Goff era. Florida will be better prepared, better motivated and have a far superior game plan and the Georgia players will not be able to overcome this despite their talent.
Kirby will be facing his first crisis this off-season and will have much pressure to put together a coaching staff that can bring Georgia football into the modern era. That three yards and a cloud of dust offense ain't going to cut it nowadays. I'm not trying to troll you guys, I'm just giving you a heads up so hopefully you will be let down more easily
FredBear, so, Kirby's Ray Goff, and Mullen is Spurrier? Well, I remember a few years ago when all the experts were saying how Mullen's team was going to beat Smart's team. Mullen had his QB, and had been at that program far longer than Smart had been at Georgia.
Funny how the players didn't seem to matter in that one. Mullen had already had years to build his team, while Kirby had just gotten started building his. Kirby won that game, just like he has every time he has faced Mullen.
Just keep thinking along those lines. It's all a Florida fan has when it comes comparing Kirby to Mullen. Kirby's batting 1000 on the field, as well as the recruiting trail. Mullen will have to be a better coach. So far that theory hasn't seemed to matter.
Kirby just keeps on beating Mullen.
Fred Bear, SmartsTheMan, you both have good points. I agree our offensive strategy needs to evolve going into the future, starting tomorrow, but I'm worried that probably won't happen. If we win I think it will be the players overcoming coaching with pure talent and desire. I do think Mullen could be a difference maker in this game unfortunately.
The Dawgs are capable of great things if everything comes together and Fromm is on his A game. I said in an earlier post a couple of days ago our biggest problem has been the offense not being able to get in sync and maintain a rhythm. I think we need to go more up tempo and keep our best players on the field. We can start the substitutions later in the game, our size and depth could be the determining edge late in the game.
One more point to make, the Dawgs have been disrespected by many the last couple of weeks, and deserve the criticism. They have been counted out, questioned, by many the last couple of weeks, the fans, the media (so called experts). This should be a major motivator for this coaching staff and team. Odd we find our backs to the wall with a team many expected to challenge for the Natty. Just remember this all you "Rick Gillmores" out there. There is nothing more dangerous than a bunch of Big, Mean, Hungry, Junkyard Dawgs that feel like they are cornered.
MobileDawg, and Fred Bear, a couple more points. Do either of you think Mullen would have done a better job of coaching Smart's players in the NCG, and the other SECCG against those stacked Alabama teams, the one's who were coached by that Nick Saban guy.
Saban had more talent and depth in both of those games, especially the NCG. I don't see how anyone can discount Smart's coaching ability after what he's accomplished. I truly have no reason to believe Mullen would have done as well.
Mullen has never impressed me as a great HC. He did well at Florida as OC, but only when he had Tebow, Harvin and that totally stacked team. Otherwise, what has he done that points to him being a better coach? He is a very good to great OC. Smart is a very good to great DC. Take a look at Ga and we see they're leading the SEC in total defense. Florida is No.6. SEC in total offense.
People are simply overreacting to Ga's offense. They lost every receiver who had any experience. That is showing. Otherwise, everything is as everyone expected it would be. Also, most experts are still picking Ga to beat Florida...
SmartsTheMan, hope you're right, I just don't buy into the fact that our receivers can't be coached up, especially at this point in the year. For every point, there is a counterpoint, in football they are called adjustments and I just don't see us making offensive adjustments to counter what the defense is showing, or giving us. Don't have any issues on the defensive side of the ball. In game coaching decisions, clock management, I do see some issues with Kirby.
The coaching advantage I give to Mullen is on the offensive side of the ball only.
Those things said, I am in total support of Smart, never was a Richt man, just never agreed with his philosophy on how to build a team, I'm just defending my comments and position. I'm not trying to be negative, I just want to see CKS grow as a Coach.
You are right. That first quarter of the game shows that Mullen is not close to Smart when it comes to coaching. Can you imagine if we had all those bonehead errors in a game? Another thing I noticed is that floriduh's receivers do not block well. People talk about how our receivers don't get all the yards that other teams do, but look at how many receivers have ended up PLAYING in the NFL since Kirby has been HC. In the NFL you have to be able to block as well as catch. A lot of the receivers piling up big yardage in college end up at home after college is over. Kirby's staff does a great job at coaching up players and getting them to play all aspects of the game. And how many times have you seen receivers open 10-20 yards like Cager was? All of the catches made by fl were contested. Blown coverages are rare in the Smart era. He seems to have his players in position at all times. They may miss a few plays now and then, but at least they are there. Kirby will eventually get his championships, his teams are too well coached. The combination of losing the top 5 receivers AND several being injured has caused problems in the passing game that us fans have blamed on coaching. You can't work on continuity if you have a different group of receivers every week, and all of them are learning a new offense.
