Just my take, but I assume this is going to be part of the transformation to the offense Coley wants to run. We will still get big bodied players but with a few more smaller athletes to create mismatches in space.
As for qb, get the best player you can every year because you have no idea what’s available a year later. Get them on campus and prepare for attrition via portal, because the past 10 years have shown an uptick in qb transfers.
Contingency plans. Priority is Smith, who’s taking his decision to Feb unless something changes. We still need an influx of speed.
Been somewhat clear for a while that its a toss up on Smith, but it doesn’t change our need. Staff has to prepare to lose out Smith.
Regarding Wren and Fleming. Wren has questions on his ability to catch the football as he doesn’t get those opportunities. Fleming is a true WR.
Wren player comp would be Hardman, blazing speed (Wren faster), but not as shifty. Still slot/ST nightmare.
IMO Fleming reminds me a lot of Jacquez Green coming out of HS. Dangerous with ball in his hands, true WR with combo of speed and wiggle. I’ve seen the Isiah McKenzie comparisons but Fleming doesn’t have that much wiggle and a tad faster than McKenzie. Human joystick he is not imo.
If we can help it, we do want Smith’s size/speed combo but we can’t be left at the alter when we have such a top speed deficiency.
I understand your QB concern. But I like the approach of recruiting the best players for the current cycle and not holding out for a future cycle.
Wren, Smith and Fleming......speed. need all we can get
Question @JeffSentell .......how did Georgia come across Wren? Did he camp in Athens?
Hankton - Louisiana connections
Thanks CZ......do you know if he camped at UGA?
Not sure if he camped but worked out twice for staff I believe.
Oh ok thanks, thought it might be a late riser for the 2020 class.
Maybe I was not saying the right thing in the right way (tough in a classroom full of kids, lol)....
I LOVE the influx of speed. I would take all of Wren, Fleming and Smith.
I just wondered more of the context of overall WR recruiting. With Pickens, we have the big tall WR, and after him is Tounge and maybe Bush.... then Robinson who is going to need some time.
Smaller quick guys we already have Jackson, DRob and Blaylock--bringing in 3 more of the same 'type' of kids is strange to me.
I guess Rosemy is a tweener in my mind.... I am trying to make my mind figure out how we line up in most of our 11 sets with who we will have on campus is all.
Thanks for the clarification @SoFL_Dawg
This may help projected WRs roles for next year; obviously based on need/matchups they’ll line up where needed.
X WR: Pickens, Rosemy, Robinson
Z WR: Drob*, Bush, Tongue, Blount, Smith*, Fleming*
Slot: Blaylock, KJ, Wren
@SoFL_Dawg
Ok.... now we are getting into my world here, and the discussions that I LOVE (and, we might need to move it to a different thread, IDK)...
I love X's and O's discussions....
I see it more of:
X:Pickens, Bush, Tounge, Robinson*
Z: KJ, Rosemy, Blount, Smith*
Slot: DRob, Blaylock, Fleming*, Wren*
@kurganofprussia Speed is needed.
You have your tall fast guys in Landers and Bush. Either lack of production or lack of health.
Pickens and Robinson are outside possession guys.
Blaylock isnt a burner he's your old fashioned West Coast offense guy. Quick and smooth.
KJ will be draft eligible next year. DRob may not return next season either.
Rosemy is the all around guy. Reminds me a lot of Ridley.
So bringing in 3 burners would be ideal. And each can play different roles for the team in slot, back, and ST.
I forgot Landers on this. Typically our Z WRs are the guys in motion and possess more speed. X WR are our possession WRs.
Drob has lined up in slot out of necessity this season. Simmons used for blocking, Pickens used for talent at Z, when Cager is heathy at X.
Question or you, do you think we could use a scholarship for another transfer WR? I feel like if have to reach too far, it could be an option.
Im watching for QB more than WR. I dont know any WRs currently transferring who would come in and take spots of KJ, GP, and Blay.
Heres a list let me know who seems interesting:

I am trying not go too far down rabbit hole here, but we have to be careful with generalizations and roles. I cannot tell you how many times I have made this mistake or misevaluation and it came back to bite me.
I will keep this short cuz I don't want to be "off-topiced"
I forgot about Landers as well.... he should be in the X category.
I also know there are theoretically guys that can do both... but everyone "should" have a role/slot. There should also be matchup guys (Double X's or double slots).
My concern is the lack of true X's. But, maybe that is me.
@dgdawg , to answer your question... I would take another Cager in a second.
I hear you, they’ve been listed as Z’s all year. You might be confusing their height with feeling like they’re an X, but their abilities align with Z and those route concepts. You’ll never see a X WR take a jet sweep in our offense if that helps delineate roles.
Back to recruiting: Robinson is X, Rosemy X/Z, Smith is Z, Fleming is Z/Slot, Wren is Slot. Kirby will say they’re everything.
Is there a point where giving Zirkel the scholarship makes more sense than BPA? Does blueshirting give us one more scholarship in 2020, but one less scholarship in 2024?
Mecole wasnt a prototypical WR but that worked out pretty well. I don’t care if we had 3 exact copies of Mecole and there were exactly similar. Speed kills and it’s great to have more than 1 guy that can burn you. No negative with taking more than 1 like that.
Didn't landers take a jet sweep this season? I think he got dropped for a big loss on it if I'm not mistaken.
Yes as a Z WR he is available for jet sweeps.
