imageWith Lawrence Cager's status further in doubt, more falls on Jake Fromm to fix passing woes

Perhaps no player has made a bigger difference to the Georgia offense this year than wide receiver Lawrence Cager. At the very least, no player has had a bigger impact on Jake Fromm. The numbers between when Cager has been on the field than off-field have been staggering. As dug up by ESPN's David Hale, Fromm's

Fromm and receivers will have to rise to the occasion and while the Cager injury was untimely, if it was going to happen at least we had nearly two weeks to redirect strategy before LSU.

With that said, much of the problem still lies with coaching and development. Behind Cager we have 4 and 5 star receivers, and we seem no farther along in the passing game at the end of the regular season. Many teams have no receivers this highly rated, we still have not figured out how they can get open consistently, and Fromm has the best pass protection around. Regarding play calling we seem terrified to take shots in the middle of the field, allowing defenses to scheme for and seriously limit the sideline and backfield passes (which are about all we run). The element of surprise has been non-existent in our offensive play calling both pass and run all season long. Talent, creativity, development and unpredictability have to mesh to win championships.

Five teams have scored 28 points or more on the LSU defense.

Georgia just needs to make it into that 28 point range or more, and that will give them a good chance of winning.

Georgia has the SEC's best defense. If the offense can sustain drives ( just a few more than in the last three games) that will help keep the defense fresh. The LSU defense is not as good as their offense. I think Georgia can move the ball and put up 28- 34 points.

Fromm and the rest of the receiving corps (along with the tight ends) will have to figure it out. Fromm is the leader, so it's up to him to guide the ship, but you know GT and LSU will be gunning for him. Without true play making ability with his legs, Fromm needs quick passes and must be able to move out of the pocket quickly.

Maybe we'll get lucky and have Cager back by the time LSU rolls around.

    GO DAWGS!!

Connor stated the obvious.....it is Pickens, Blaylock and Robertson...Cager is gone for the season IMO. Two frosh and a couple of other receivers he seldom targets must find favor with Fromm. Pickens has and Blaylock to some degree. But Fromm trusted Cager....a phenom WR! Once Cager left ...as the stats indicate....the passing game partially vanished. Unless Fromm finds multiple receivers, LSU should have little problem with UGA as a passing threat. LSU seems actually relieved UGA won the SEC East. One dimensional, conservative team for all practical purposes...defense notwithstanding...that in itself is a major deterrent, however...IMO. But a low scoring UGA offense is just what LSU ordered. They believe UGA cannot wear LSU down. We'll see. The Dawgs have weathered many adverse storms...and WON! GO DAWGS!

Most everyone agrees the passing game has almost vanished and offense vanilla all season. The bigger question is that despite Cager’s huge talent, why a staff with championship motives would cast all their lots on primarily one such receiver?

Injuries like this can happen at any time. It’s the responsibility of the coaches to continually develop the other receivers all season long, instead of waiting until an emergency develops. That starts in practice but continued development comes with game day reps.....all season long. For many weeks coach Smart has been saying we have to get better....have we progressed? And as an aside, with this approach is there a reason that future 4/5 star receivers would select UGA over OK, Clemson, AL, OSU, etc?

one man doesn't make this team, the talent is there. Fromm has to step up because the running game isn't going to save him this year. We let two five stars leave to keep fromm now is his chance to put the team on his back and win the last few games! BOW your necks you hairy dawgs and wreck tech and win the SEC!

Pickens is the key IMO. He goes up and gets the contested balls and has the burner speed to get separation. Fromm just needs to lay the ball out there and let him go get it.

Maybe rewatch the Blaylock clip above. Sure looks like a pass over the middle to me.

With Cager, he has proven to be a 5* SEC receiver. Fromm can have confidence that he is 1) going to get off the LOS, 2) be where he is supposed to be, and 3) have some separation.

The rest of our receivers were 4* and 5* high school players but are not yet 4* and 5* SEC players. Experience matters! None can be trusted to consistently get off the LOS in press coverage much less be where they are supposed to be with separation so the ball can be where it's supposed to be on time.

When the receivers can consistently be counted on to do their jobs, Jake has proven he can be counted on to do his.

@SmartsTheMan , you are correct about five teams having scored at least 28 points against LSU, and that if UGA could get to that number, we'd have a fairly decent chance of beating them. But therein is the problem. UGA has only scored more than 28 points against two Power 5 team this year (Vandy and Tennessee) so the odds are not in our favor that we'll suddenly hit an offensive firestorm against LSU. My REAL fear for that game, though, is that we're going to have a 4-5 point lead with 2 minutes remaining and LSU is going to mount some all-time historic 75-yard drive against our tired defense to win it. THAT is what I fear more than a blowout, that we'll lose the game at the end playing the way we have against Auburn and Texas A&M. Still, Go Dawgs!

"He and Kirby Smart have stressed not turning the ball over this year.“You want to take care of the football,” Fromm said. “I think our guys do a really good job doing that.”

Great goal but I remember a young freshman who got his big chance when the 1st string QB went down with an injury. Hope was high but expectations were held in check.

Jake was allowed to air it out. He made mistakes but far less than any freshman in memory.

I suspect Kirby has affected Jake. This year and at times last year, Jake does NOT go through his progressions with the speed and decisiveness as in the past- his greatest strength in the beginning. I know Jake has great, well deserved respect for CKS But Kirby is not an offense guy, not a former QB. Perhaps we need a better, stronger QB coach? Jake wants to be perfect and that can put pressure on any person. I am sure the lack of experience in the receiver corps is an important factor but I think there is more to this story.

    Go Dawgs!

That's college football......and yes a lot of it depends on Fromm...can he step up and lead the team....It's really that simple

When we play LSU, he just needs to turn Fromm loose...hit whose open, let the cards fall where they may. We are going to need offense, I guarantee they will. Our defense will NOT be able to tote the offense in this game.
