Georgia vs. Mississippi State

sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

After a long afternoon of covering football stadium stuff ... how about some late-night basketball?!?!

Georgia tips off against Mississippi State at 9:05 p.m. It would seem the Bulldogs - er, Georgia, is the favorite and should put this in the win column. Especially coming off Saturday's big road win. But Georgia (14-11, 5-7) and Mississippi State (14-11, 5-7) have similar records, and the visitors can shoot the 3-ball really well. That's been a problem for Georgia this year.

Mississippi State has lost four of its last five and six of its last eight. So this is a game Georgia needs to get, which would make Saturday's game against Kentucky a pretty big one. Check here for updates and analysis.

Starting lineups: Tyree Crump is NOT starting again. Neither is Mike Edwards. Instead Juwan Parker is back in the starting lineup and now joined by ... E'Torrion Wilridge.

    Well, didn't see that coming.

The crowd, you can already tell, is going to be pretty sparse tonight. Mississippi State isn't exactly a big draw, and 9 p.m. for a mid-week game in Athens .... yeah, predictably sparse.

????? I don't profess to be a basketball expert, and have a healthy respect for Coach Fox, but not starting Crump after his last performance makes no sense to me!

A moment of silence for Quentin Moses before the national anthem.

First off the bench is Mike Edwards, who replaces Derek Ogbeide ... who has three rebounds in the first three minutes. Ah, the sub patterns.

Tyree Crump comes in at the 16:06 mark, along with Houston Kessler. Now that I think about it, this is pretty late in the season to have this much intrigue over substitution patterns. But here we are.

Both teams are playing ... not well. Georgia is 1-for-6 with 3 turnovers. Mississippi State is 1-for-7 with 3 turnovers. MSU actually has had open shots, but has just missed them. Georgia isn't getting good shots off. Houston Kessler just drove against two guys and had his shot land well short of the rim. That kind of game so far.

So it's tied at 9-9 at the second media timeout. Houston Kessler just picked up his second foul, on an illegal screen. Mississippi State living off the 3, with all their points coming that way. Georgia continues to look out of sorts on offense, and that can't be helped by the continued upheaval in lineups and sub patterns.

E'Torrion Wilridge coming through so far in his first start: Five points and four rebounds, with those five points helping Georgia stem a rally that temporarily put it behind 17-11.

Hey, Tyree Crump, he just hit a 3 to end a three-minute scoreless stretch for Georgia, which had fallen behind again by five. Now it's two.

J.J. Frazier still hasn't scored for Georgia. He hasn't been that active at all, just taking two shots. Yante Maten has six points, all at the free throw line, as he's doing a good job drawing fouls in the low block.

Mississippi State takes a 28-21 lead after Georgia's ninth turnover leads to a breakaway dunk, and Mark Fox calls timeout.

Yup, nine turnovers. Georgia's half-court offense looks like the same mess it did before the Tennessee game.

Is my TV color off or is the three point painted area pink for Valentines Day?

You remember those videos of newborn ponies or deer trying to take their first steps.....that's UGA basketball. Wobble, wobble, face plant.

Halftime: Mississippi State 32, Georgia 28. ... Georgia late in the half went into a stretch in which it went 1-for-12 from the field, and scoreless for more than four minutes. A Turtle Jackson steal, leading to a breakaway layup for Yante Maten, ended the run.

The difference is at the 3-point line. MSU is 6-for-14, while Georgia is 2-for-8. Zero points for J.J. Frazier, who can't get open looks.

Mississippi State is really quick, and moves the ball around well for open shots. Georgia's a bit lucky more of those shots haven't gone down for MSU. On the other hand, a lot of points to be had for Georgia if Frazier can get going, and if it can stop the turnovers.

Terrible Basketball, just terrible. If they lose this game Fox should be fired as he walks off the court. He obviously has no idea about substitution or how to inspire a team.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Georgia played 11 guys in the first half. The only scholarship player not to get in was Kenny Paul Geno. On the one hand, okay, depth. On the other, this just doesn't seem like the time to be toying around with lineups. It's too late in the season, your season is on the line, this needs to be a win.

I'll be curious if they shorten the rotation in the second half. The starting lineup remains the same: Wilridge and Parker joining Frazier, Maten and Ogbeide.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Better start to the second half for Georgia, which has tied it a couple times. MSU helped by committing three turnovers in the first four minutes, and starting 0-for-4 from the field. But Georgia also had chances to tae further advantage and didn't. Still no points from Frazier, who missed a long pull-up three on the break. He's trying to get going, and right now he has the luxury of trying some lower-percentage shots with the game close and plenty of time left.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Frazier finally scores - on a pull-up 3, giving Georgia a 40-35 lead, and Ben Howland calls timeout.

It was Frazier's seventh shot of the game, and third of the half. But he's finally in the scoring column.

  • sethemersonsethemerson Posts: 686 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Oh, and J.J. Frazier came out of the game after finally hitting that 3.
