I don't think he will make a public comment, but I do think Kirby had to have asked for his input behind closed doors at some point in the last couple weeks. Guessing there was a definite endorsement.
What I would really love to see would be for this new offense to drop 50 in spring game on our elite defense. Kirby would have a melt down.
10 personnel, for all the fans who think our TEs don't get involved enough.
Monken will likely use our tight ends as wide receivers between the 20s. Red zone he uses more 11 and 12 personnel. Darnell and Mckitty will be split out wide and should be excellent targets in the middle of the field.
We will go 4 and 5 wide frequently, often with a RB and/or tight end running routes, many times out of a motion. Also some pistol formation with 2 RBs or H back. Imagine dealing with a Zamir/Newman read option with a pass option to Pickens thrown on top.
Monken will leave no options unexplored. Going to stress coverages and assignments at every level.
The one DV was his wife.
Imo this is THE hire that is gonna get us over the NC bump with ZERO doubt. And because KS is the recruiting king even after Monken leaves n a few years it will have snowballed and along with a dominant defense being a priority; so will an offense that can light up the board.
Greatest time in history to be a DAWG!! Next 5 yrs= 2-3 NC's!
Just good coaching and staff hire. Addressing the only non A aspect of our program with a guy that not only has developed studs, but he can also get even average players open on scheme alone. Got a d a m n good fit for what this team needs. Next year can't get here fast enough.
I really really want to believe you.
I can't see CKS never getting over the hump. N he could arguably do it next year in half the time it took Dabo to win one. If a Natty isn't won in 5 years, there can be no excuses. We just have too many alpha DAWGS . And they're backed up by other blue chips. I just don't see any team in the country from top to bottom has a 2-3 deep everywhere like we do.
One of my favorite things about this guy is what he's done with average players. He appears to be a coach who gets his guys to execute better.
He is also not really about the Air Raid, but much more about balance in the sense that Kirby uses the term. Running and passing or Passing and running. To me, it doesn't matter which is emphasized as long as we can do what we need to do when the time is right. Execution.
It looks like a very good hire for a stubborn Kirby who can't see anything but defense and can't do anything but run up the middle. /s
Go, Dawgs!
I'm hoping this is signalling a big development in Kirby as a head coach. I'm hoping this is him finally realizing that we have to innovate on offense to get over the hump. That you can't force the offensive scheme onto the talent you have but have to develop the scheme to take advantage of what your players do best. You also have to adapt to the changing landscape of college football.
Another thing I LOVE about this is it's showing Kirby is willing to admit a mistake and correct it. The inability to make the tough decision and make the change when needed was what cost Richt so many times and probably contributed more to his firing than anything else. Sticking with Martinez at DC was the prime example.
Kirby being willing to admit a mistake and putting the program ahead of his ego or feelings of loyalty is a great sign.
Ohio State. Alabama. and LSU is pretty close. A pretty good excuse for not winning a natty is that there are other uber-talented, well-coached teams not willing to roll over and play dead. Alabama had the most talent of any team for a decade and didn't win it every year. In fact, Bama got beat twice by less-talented-on-paper teams this year. Now there are a couple of other programs building monster rosters who will not have the benefit that Saban had in the 2010's- being the far and away biggest kid on the block.
Winning a natty is no small task. LSU probably won't win one in 2020. It's possible that Clemson doesn't win another for eight years. Saban may have won his last natty. Many things have to fall into place, often times by coincidence as much as preparation. But, to be sure, without preparation (roster building, hiring the right staff, S&C) it won't happen. Georgia is right there. But they're not the only ones.
Love this post. The championship-or-bust crowd are toxic and unreasonable. You put yourself in a position to compete and take your best shot. Do that consistently and you likely break through. No guarantees even in the long run though, and especially not in a window of a year or two.
Enjoy the sustained elevated level of play and be patient. Otherwise you may find yourself at the end of a run averaging 11 wins a year for almost a decade and only be bitter about it.
