Connor, the payout difference between the B1G and the SEC is primarily due to the expiring CBS football broadcast contract. The SEC signed a longer-term deal on the last contract, which the SEC did not seek to renegotiate because of the 3:30 ET exclusive window. The new contract has now been let, with CBS declining to get in the bidding war. Expect to see those numbers more in line going forward, despite having more conference members. Go Dawgs!
MONEY!!! While it is highlighted in this article, it is THE primary reason some programs are able to separate themselves from others. Alabama & OSU have always been amongst the top spenders. Clemson, with virtually the same coaching staff, only became great after they built "Dabo World". And yes, Georgia's elevation from good to great was primarily due to money now spent on the program. LSU's recent multi-million dollar infusion into their already nice facilities have set them apart. As has Oklahoma's. I've said it before and I will say it again... championships are essentially bought these days, or at the very least, you pay to play at the highest level. Sadly, the number of schools having the ability to play at that level is getting smaller and smaller.
Big time players want to play in big games. Every week in the SEC is a war. Practice during the week with Georgia is also a chance to make players better because they practice against some of the best players in the country. There is also the time zone difference. They get more prime time tv slots on the east coast. The fans and the game day atmosphere is daylight and dark difference. Bigger crowds and more tv viewers watching gives the players a little more pep in their steps on game day. Fans, facilities, tv, coaches, why would any big time players turn down the opportunity to play in the SEC and Athens?
