Hey folks - as a member of the DawgNation community, please remember to abide by simple rules of civil engagement with other members:
- Please no inappropriate usernames (remember that there may be youngsters in the room)
- Personal attacks on other community members are unacceptable, practice the good manners your mama taught you when engaging with fellow Dawg fans
- Use common sense and respect personal differences in the community: sexual and other inappropriate language or imagery, political rants and belittling the opinions of others will get your posts deleted and result in warnings and/ or banning from the forum
- 3/17/19 UPDATE -- We've updated the permissions for our "Football" and "Commit to the G" recruiting message boards. We aim to be the best free board out there and that has not changed. We do now ask that all of you good people register as a member of our forum in order to see the sugar that is falling from our skies, so to speak.

Not that we’ve heard it in the past three years but does this mean no more chomping??? Lol

This is probably why they did it, can't really blame UF if this is why.... I had never heard of this before today.
Wow. This was gut wrenching to read
With all the crazy going on in society right now FU will probably get pressured to loose "the Swamp" and even Gators!
But clemson continues to keep their focal building named Tillman hall after a known racist
well, I stand corrected. Clemson attempting to remove the name
I can see the case for what Florida is doing. My only concern is how far does this go and when does it stop. I am of the opinion that if you dig enough you will find something in basically everyone's past that will offend someone. Again, I get it and the case could be made Florida should have made this change already (I had never heard this history prior to this week). I think it just bears watching is all.
If you want something to be racist, there is a very good chance that you can make it racist. Instead of trying to change the past, we need to look to the future.
Andy Staples wrote an interesting article about this on the Athletic. I had never heard of the racist usage of the term or that the chant used by UF fans was popularized by an African-American player (who says he didn’t know about the history of the phrase and would have liked to have a discussion about this before the decision was made) in the 90’s.
As Staples says, the move to make the change didn’t erase history, it revealed it.
We should try to get the “chomp” motion removed because the same reason.
It may have been re-popularized by Wright in the 90s, but below is proof that it was used as early as the 50s. Trying to claim that an African American player made it popular so that makes it okay, still doesn't make it right. I didn't know about the history of the term either, but now that I do know, I don't question the decision to ban it.
So we’re clear, I never said (nor does the story claim) that an African American re-popularizing the term made it OK. Nor am I questioning the decision to ban it.
I understand. My comment was aimed towards all of the Gators who are trying to explain away why it is an okay term and they can continue using it.
I think the real mistake was when the president of the university said they weren't using it as a racial term, but the they are banning it for having racists origins anyways. If these school are going to make big moves like this, then they need to take a firm stand against racism instead of being so wishy-washy about it.
Cool. I think this is going to happen more and more, especially here in the South. Do I think current Gator fans are using it (before yesterday) knowing it’s a racist term or with racist intent? I don’t. Do I have questions about prior generations, considering we’re seeing it used by Gator fans going back further and further? Yeah, I do.
The question is, now that we know, what do we do?
Exactly, never heard of it till now. What's next, Georgia has to change colors because red is in the confederate flag??
Stop the madness! The only thing this cancel culture is doing is dooming us to repeat history & alienating half the population. This has officially gone full retard.
