Why do some MLB umpires wear Blue and some wear Black?

So I came across this on Twitter and it made me wonder why the 2 different uniforms and how is it determined which will be worn. Can’t find anything definitive on the google, so I am turning to my trusty DawgNation faithful to help me out here.

Read that the home plate ump can wear which ever he wants and the field guys can also but all 3 have to match.

I'm not aware of any special reason for it being those two colors. Other than tradition. It's different today, but for the better part of the last 100 years most men went to work in a black or blue suit. In the early days of baseball, the coaches and the umpires all wore formal suits.

Today the formality is gone but they still wear primarily black and blue. They've also worn maroon jackets with gray pants in the past, though I can't remember the last time I saw that combo. I'm sure it's nice to have the light blue option for hotter day games.

Awesome. I have definitely missed cries for the black jerseys during my absence. Feels more like home than it ever used to. Thanks.
