TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY

Talk Like a Pirate Day sails away annually on September 19th.

All you bilge rats, Aaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrgh! As you are out and about on September 19th, don’t be surprised if people are saying, “Ahoy Matie,” “Avast,” “Aye, Aye Capt’n,” “Land ho!” “Hornpipe,” and many other pirate-like phrases, because it’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

While ordering your coffee in the drive-thru, ask if they have change for gold bullion. Try testing your pirate language out at the library when asking for the location of Moby Dick. The pirate language always fairs well in rough seas. Settle a debate with “I’m right or I’ll walk the plank!”

When the boss gives you a new project, “Aye, aye, Capt’n,” is the correct response. However, beware calling the boss any frothy names. The goal of the day is not to lose your job.

To polish your persona, practice a swagger, limp or squint. Long days at sea give pirates unique qualities.

Even pirates have to have something about which to talk and what could be a better topic than butterscotch pudding?

NATIONAL BUTTERSCOTCH PUDDING DAY

On September 19th, National Butterscotch Pudding Day offers a sweet taste of a wholesome and creamy dessert.

Brown sugar and butter star in the recipes for butterscotch pudding. However, corn syrup, vanilla, and salt are also sometimes used. Butterscotch adds amazing flavor to items such as sauces, candies, and frostings.

An 1848 newspaper offers the scoop on this yummy pudding. According to “Housewife’s Corner” and Masluk Cream Co., the real recipe for “making Doncaster butterscotch is one pound of butter, one pound of sugar and a quarter of a pound of treacle, boiled together.”

Enjoy butterscotch pudding on its own or use it in other recipes. The flavor goes well with graham cracker crusts for pies or layered in a trifle, too. Simply layer with chunks of pound cake and whipped cream. Add nuts or a caramel drizzle for texture and visual appeal.

Spike your pudding with bourbon or rum. Pudding shots are delicious little cocktails.
