UEFA Championship game
Anyone watch the UEFA championship game, England vs Italy? Not much of a game till the shoot-out. England missed three shots....THREE! All three misses the kicker tried to get cute instead of just blasting it. Was a good lesson on not being a show-off. A penalty kick is literally the easiest play in in sports. It has about an 84% success rate. England missed 3 out of 5. Absurd.
Anyway, congrats to Italy. They were the better team.

Yes I watched the whole thing. I think all Georgia fans can relate to English national team soccer fans. Yesterday, England had a 3rd and 26 moment. It was sad to watch.
Good analogy.
And then England went full bore racist…
I know next to nothing about soccer other than that I admire the skills they have developed. When the guys who missed the penalty kicks were inserted into the game, very late, does that mean they have to take penalty kicks or could the coach have put anyone he wanted to take the kicks. If the former, might it have been a mistake to put them into a game that could be going to penalty kicks? The announcers said England uses their best kickers first - they scored. Then the "lesser" kickers came on. That didn't work so well. Some idiot fans then chose to make matters worse. Crazy.
I'm pretty sure they can pick anyone to do PKs. I also thought it was curious to use a couple of backups to take the most important kicks of the year.
I missed that. What happened?
It has to be players that were on the field at the final whistle.
Correct, and 2 of those guys were inserted right before the end of extra time just to take PK's. England had substituted some offensive minded players for defenders when they were protecting the 1-0 lead. Also, the player that missed the final PK was 19 yrs old and there was still a veteran striker that plays for Manchester City that had not taken a kick yet. I thought it was very odd.
I typed a sarcastic reply about soccer…but out of respect to @TNDawg71 @Canedawg2140 and other soccer supporters ….I decided to erase comments.
Semi-OT, but anyone who has not seen Ted Lasso (AppleTV) should watch it immediately. College FB coach goes to England to coach a premier league soccer team. Not really about soccer, just an all-around good show. The most wholesome R rated show you’ll find.
Yeah I was surprised Sterling didn’t get chosen. Coaches can overthink these things. Typically they do a PK session during training before the tourney and rank the players. Honestly I’m not sure I like the method.
I like watching HS soccer. I hated playing it in PE - they always stuck me in the goal…
Soccer sarcasm in the 80’s was as southern as sweet tea. That has changed somewhat I guess…
So true, I didn’t play in HS because it was baseball season and that was my best sport by far in HS. I didn’t like several of the soccer types but was good friends with a girl that played at UNC. Watched a lot in HS played travel when I was younger. Intramurals in college and adult league after. I picked up coaching when there was a clear gap in qualified coaches and got my national licenses.
