A few days ago he mentioned he thinks his low energy at Georgia might have been due to early symtoms from Parkinson's I just read this at Parkinson's.org.

''People who have severe fatigue early in their Parkinson's tend to stay fatigued''

I noticed his struggles in news conferences many times from around 2006 on. At times he seemed so spent he could barely focus. Add this to the struggles his adopted daughter had with her many surgeries and Kathern's cancer, it's a wonder he could function at all.

Yet though all of it the man compiled the best winning percentage in program history and missed winning a couple of national titles by simple fate.

I'm a big Kirby fan but we will never have a better representative of our program and school than Coach Richt was and remains, he is a truly great person and a DGD, I hope we can all think before posting. He's earned our respect and even my genuine love.

It certainly explains some things otherwise attributed to him not caring enough or not good at the job any longer.

When we made the switch it was past time to do so, but if it not for Richt we would not be where we are now. Anyone who complained about his later years didn’t live in the 90s with Goff and Donnan.

Not lately. But I think when initially he left and Kirby had some success there were some comments. But I think most people leave him alone.

Just in the past week somebody made the usual complaint about a coaching decision Richt made, and the post was ''snarky''. I made the point that Kirby also has a few high profile calls we could bring up. I just think in light of recent news it's time to celebrate CMR's legacy without the qualifiers.

Having seen both up close, it's not fair to lump Donnan and Goff together.

Goff inherited a strong program from Vince Dooley that was only 8 years removed from a natty. He promptly drove it into the ground, going 46-34 over 7 seasons.

Donnan inherited Goff's dumpster fire and went 40-19 in 5 seasons, including a 4-0 record in bowl games.

Donnan laid the foundation for Richt. Richt laid the foundation for Kirby.

EDIT: Probably should add that Goff was a great player and a DGD who is beloved by many UGA fans, supporters, and alumni around the state. He just wasn't a good football coach.

Having lived in Athens through the Goff years, I agree he didn't light the SEC on fire but he was also dealing with the fallout from the whole Jan Kemp fiasco. Pres. Knapp made it hard for us to recruit S. GA D linemen and we turned into a finesse team as a result. Never forget Vandy rushing for over 400 yds on us on our homecoming. Direct result of converted LBs playing D line. Painful to watch.

Goff inherited a "strong program"?? What's strong? How many years had it been since UGA won 10 games?

Goff didn't inherit a "strong" program. Ray was able to get a 10-win season, and his last season there were lots of injuries.

Goff recruited Muschamp and Kirby, but also, Eric Zeier set an SEC record for passing in the offense.

Not saying he was a HOF coach, but he did win the SEC as a UGA quarterback and was the SEC's Player of the Year.

Most UGA fans I come across respect and appreciate all their past coaches. That's a nice trend.

Everybody wanted Goff to succeed. He was a favorite son but he was fighting an uphill battle.

Knapp unilaterally raised admission standards for scholarship athletes higher than the rest of the SEC as he wanted to make Athens Harvard on the Oconee. He wanted to erase the memory of Fred Davidson and the perception that UGA was just a football school. And Davidson's comment saying UGA football players who graduated would be qualified to work for the post office. Techies had a big laugh at that quote and actually had t-shirts made that said "Go You Hairy Postmen."

Ray was also not Erk. Most boosters and fans wanted Erk to replace Dooley. Again, Knapp wasn't having it so Erk finished a few more seasons and national titles at GSU and retired.

That's the environment that Ray walked in to.

Goff was a tremendous recruiter, but his players didn’t respect neither him nor themselves. They literally threw that Vandy homecoming game. It wasn’t a result of LBers converted to DL. It was because of Homecoming Queen drama on campus.

If Robert Edwards doesn’t break his foot in Knoxville during the first half then there’s a strong chance Goff would have been extended at the end of the year, after an SEC East title

Donnan never comes. Perhaps Richt comes sooner. Perhaps never at all.
