I bought a rectec a year ago to replace my traeger after 1 year. Traeger was not a bad unit but oh my goodness the rec tec is a straight up Cadillac. As for cooking the easy stuff get a set of the grillgrates branded searing grates. I can make burgers steaks or whatever as quick as anyone. Rec Tec is where it's at a million percent.
I wonder how good it is at retaining heat over long periods of time. One of the beauties of ceramic is heat retention. I'm sure it will get hotter than a mother though. Looks pretty cool.
I hope to find out someday because I'm a big fan of iron for cooking! I use a lodge #10 iron skillet and/or griddle on the grill rather than grates for just about everything and can tell you they get hot, cook evenly, & stay hot a long time after the heat's removed. Same with a cast iron chimenea that we have; takes the heat, retains it much longer than the ceramic we had. Plus, I'm clumsy as hell so iron's gonna last longer than ceramic around me!
Let us know if you pick one up. I'd be interested in your review.
Well Dawg friends, I ended up deciding not to take on the risk or hassle of choosing the Peloton and selling it then ordering the RecTec all in time for season, and instead just selected the Traeger option out of the gate. I got it Thursday - put it together Thursday night and started off simple on Friday night / Pizza night by cooking some pizzas. They turned out good - definitely better than they do in the oven. Saturday was the real test though: I smoked some bone in skin on chicken legs (with a bbq glaze) and thighs (with a garlic and paprika rub), as well as some fresh squash from our garden. It was definitely the juiciest chicken I ever had. My kids and wife loved it. I am extremely excited about all of the potential of this thing. I have some pics below to share. Ill post on future meals to the Sippin' Grillin' Chillin' thread going forward, but wanted to close the loop on this one first. Thanks again for the advice and encouragement. I'm planning a pork butt for this weekend and will be working my way up to a brisket / burnt end cook soon... I foresee lots of great meals with family, friends, and football in the future!
congrats and good job my man! I am jealous of the new smoker feel.... been waiting on mine to show up for a minute. He keeps saying by the end of July. Just waiting on the shipping confirmation.
great looking kids. Look like they are pretty "active".
haha, thanks! oh, yes they are most certainly "active" 😁
Do you make your own pizza?
Yep, we do it often. We started a Friday night Pizza night tradition about 6 months ago - sometimes we make it, sometimes we pick one up, although my favorite pizza shop just went out of business, so Im bummed out about that
