2021 Georgia men picked to finish last in SEC basketball

This is unacceptable. Why can’t we have nice things?

They’ll finish higher. I’m not a Crean fan but he will get them out of the basement.

At some point we are going to have to throw big money at a big time recruiter type coach. Unacceptable at this point not to have some of the best players out of Georgia coming to Georgia. Maybe Kirby can provide some tips. To compete with the best you have to have the athletes too and not just a good coach.

I’d just like to see ‘relevant’ every year, with a good run at things every few years. Not trying to be greedy here.

I seldom predict - in fact, this is the first time ever on this board. UGA won't finish last in the SEC.

Not sure why we cannot be relevant in basketball. Current situation is not good and seems that all decent players transfer out every year. Why is that? Do the players not like the coach or is the atmosphere around the program so bad that they all want out? No reason why a major Univ such as UGA cannot have a competetive basketball program.

Plenty of sharks in the water .... LSU comes to mind. Would Georgia fans want their program to go that far to be elite?

It's a serious question because the answer for some would be "yes" -- guaranteed.

Agree. Surprised their coach is still there, but it is LSU after all

Crean is not the answer, but he's also not the problem. UGA ranks 12th in the SEC re: $$$ spent on men's basketball.

    1. Kentucky: $18,347,857

    2. Vanderbilt: $14,072,415

    5. Tennessee: $10,504,401

    8. Florida: $9,443,199

    11. Missouri: $9,118,566

    12. UGA: $8,304,553

    13. South Carolina: $8,230,497

    --------

Here's a proposed solution (just my $0.02): (1) After Crean is inevitably fired, convince Jonas Hayes to come to Athens as the new head coach. (2) As an enticement, make a public commitment to offer a new level of support for the program (an immediate 25% increase in the budget would be a good start). (3) Prioritize in-state recruiting.

On this last point, for perspective:

    1. Xavier signed the #8 player from the state of Georgia in the Class of 2021 (Elijah Tucker from Cherokee). Coach Crean did not sign anyone in the top 10.
    2. Xavier has a commitment from the #2 player in the state of Georgia for the Class of 2022 (Kam Craft from The Skill Factory). Coach Crean currently has zero in-state commits.

If Hayes can convince these guys to go to Cincinnati, I think there's a good chance he'd have similar success in Athens. And if we can keep just 2-3 of the top 10 players in state each year, we should start to see positive results in fairly short order.

Keep in mind, we've had Yante Maten, the SEC Player of The Year, still didn't make the NCAA tournament, and we had the #1 NBA draft pick, Anthony Edwards, and we still had a horrible team. If you couldn't do anything with that talent, then can't blame anyone for picking us to be last in SEC basketball. We might end up doing worse.

    To support your point...

    1. We averaged 20 wins a season during Maten's four years.
    2. We went 16-16 in Antman's one year.
    3. We were ranked #127 in the RPI pre-season ratings, but we just lost to #250 Charlotte in the opener, and it wasn't close.
    4. Charlotte won nine games last year. We may not reach that number this year.

The University of Georgia has a Basketball team!? 😃😃😃 Totally rad dude! 😎😎😎

Tell u 1 thing though, Georgia Basketball was no joke back in the 80s when Hugh Durham was pulling the likes of Eric Marbury (Stephen's older brother) and Vern Fleming out of NYC and Dominique Wilkins and James Banks from North Carolina and Georgia respectively. Those were some fun days to b a Georgia Basketball fan no doubt.
