It totally stinks, but Olson will probably have more value over the next few years. This was the smart move, but Freddie is one I'd like to have kept.
It's kind of like the better your total career is, the more baseball likes to pay towards the end of the career. Sort of like a lifetime achievement award. I think Freddie has earned whatever he can get in the current market. I guess Olson is my new favorite first baseman in baseball.
Don't know enough about baseball to make a comment how good/bad this is...wish Freddie the very best and thanks for his work here !
5years, 130mil. That’s supposedly what Freddie turned down because he wanted a 6th year. Don’t see how anyone could blame AA for this. As @Teddy said above, the 6th year would’ve put Freddie in his 39 year. I saw a study recently of how much production goes down starting at 36 or so. Pujols, Miggy and others were part of the study. It was astounding! Love Freddie, but this is on him IMO.
I don't really like keeping Ozuna after what he did, but I do like the looks of this.
Braves extend Matt Olson for an 8 year 168 million dollar contract that will run through 2029.
edit: not really much different from what freddie wanted honestly
That lineup is worth about a gazillion HR's a season.
SHEESH
Maybe not as tight fisted as some would have us believe.
yeah I think AA earnestly thinks Olson might be better
Per year and by age it is different enough to matter.
True, but we don't know how old Pujols and Miggy really are. Some people think Pujols is up to 5 years older than he says. Both players were great at really young ages and had steep drop offs before they should have.
It doesn't make sense to have both Ozuna and Soler. Both are atrocious at defense and only one of them can be the DH.
It was impressive how much those deals happened to work out in the Braves favor. None of those outfielders were really wanted by anyone else and weren't expected to be difference makers. Duvall is probably the most consistent, but the rest of them exploded at different key points to help the Braves through the playoffs. Joc in the Division Series, Rosario in the NLCS, and Soler in the WS.
