Can't help but feel like Freedie's agent thought he could hold the Braves hostage and AA just didn't blink and did what he needed to to take care of the team. Hopefully Freddie comes out with a good deal, but you know he's gotta be kicking himself right now.
Freddie is gonna come out worse because of this. The Braves aren't there to drive the price up for another team and all I'm seeing is four years with a higher average salary but less total money than the Braves were offering
Dodgers reportedly offered 4 years 140 million after the Olson trade. 35 million per year on average but 28 million less in total
Unless he really wanted to go to So Cal, where he was a huge Angels fan as a kid from what I heard on the radio.
Except Olsen will be 35 when the deal ends, not 39.
and 38 would have been justified? I think AA didn't want to get left out in the cold and made the best deal possible without freddie
On some MLB-TV broadcasts, Soler was praised for improving his defense. That might be enough to make him the odds-on favorite for the everyday player.
Didn't know the Angels had huge fans, seems like a very mild fan base.
No one cares about them
You said the Olsen deal wasn’t much different than what Freddie wanted. I showed you why it is.
Truly! I think you’re exactly right. I think Freddie and his agent were leveraging the Braves offer with the Dodgers (hoping for six years at 30 mil), and he didn’t get what he wanted from the Dodgers so then he was stuck with two options and couldn’t/didn’t pull the trigger. Braves and AA couldn’t risk losing Olson so, when Freddie apparently wavered , AA went ahead and signed Olson (would have been hEll to pay if AA lost both). Now they’ve extended Olson for eight years at 21 mil a year.
So the money was there. Olson will be 36 when the contract runs out, same as Freddie would have been (at a four year deal with an option), but being paid at 21 mil a year instead of 29 or 30 mil a year that they would have paid Freddie. {Maybe an agent firing in the making?}
I think the Braves won the deal! Again, really hate to lose Freddie, but the Braves showed again, just like with Acuna and Ozzie, that they know how to lock up players for long terms at reasonable rates.
Now if they can just extend Riley, Swanson, and Fried (with some of the money they saved by not signing Freddie) and get and outfielder (Rosario) and a veteran pitcher, then they’ll be set!
Go Braves! World Champions!
you didn't
"The bottom line is, Freddie I believe before it’s all said and done will be playing where he wants to play. I know he’s a West Coast guy. I know he has a home here in Atlanta. But Freddie, if he wants to play for the Atlanta Braves, he will be playing for the Atlanta Braves. I’ll leave it at that.”

Spoken by a “DGB for life” who once agreed to restructure his own contract to free dollars up for acquiring other players. It also implies that he might have some inside info. The Braves were reported to have offered Freeman 5 yrs at roughly $26M per year. That’s 1/2 million bucks EVERY WEEK for FIVE YEARS!!! That’s more than enough for three generations after you to never have to work a day in their lives if they don’t want to. So, yeah, IMO, had being a Brave for life meant that much to him, the Braves’ offer was plenty. And, if he and his agent are so certain of his long-term production, then they’d just be able to broker even another deal after that.
With that said, I’m sure there were other equally if not more important factors that he and his wife were considering. So, that aspect should be respected. I hate losing the guy and will still pull for his personal success. He was an icon. But you’re either a Brave or a Tomahawk target.
Chelsea Freeman, folks. Chels is ready for sunset stri.p selfies. YASSS babe! LA here we come!
Also, Olsen will be blasting homers out of Truist park for 8 years and winning gold gloves. AA proves again why he’s the absolute best in the business.
Freddie wanted 6/180. 30mil per season and 39 years old at the end of the deal.
Olsen got 8/168. 21mil per and he’ll be 35 at the end of the deal.
Not even close to the same deals!
Signing today of Collin McHugh is big. He has a very good arm and can gives starts or work out of the pen. Pieces are falling into place for the Braves to be back in the post season. I expect a move for a CF, especially if the Braves don’t see DuVall as an every day CF. If Soler does come back, the Braves will be potent on offense, have four solid SP and a proven pen.
