Special delivery: Kirby Smart talks about Georgia quarterbacks, high on Stetson Bennett
ATHENS — Stetson Bennett is at the top of his game and the Georgia quarterback room is in a good position from Kirby Smart’s point of view.

I'm glad to see Bennett pleasing Kirby. He obviously has gotten better and Kirby is simply enthralled with his "feet." My hope is Brock V. and Carson B. get some quality field time to refine their skills for next season and beyond. It is one thing to rep in practice , quite another to actually face another SEC opponent. Reps do help get you there for sure. I cannot see both Carson and Brock sitting out another year to wait for Bennett to finally leave. Just a hunch....and my opinion. I can see a solid #2 waiting but not a #3. I guess it depends on the goal of the player. Nothing will surprise me.,
Have to agree with everything you said, unfortunately Kirby's track record doesn't seem very good getting the backup QB's quality game time to work on their development. With Stockton in the background it's difficult to see everyone (Brock and Beck) getting reps and being happy.
Define "quality game time". Personally, I've seen him play, Bennett, Daniels, Beck, Mathis and Vandergriff in games over the last 2 years. In fact, he even started Mathis in the 1st game of 2020.
Beck went in against UAB in the 2nd half and proceeded to go 4/10 with a TD and Pick 6. He entered a few games throughout the year, as did Vandergriff. UGA may have had a mixture of 1's and 2's on the offensive side of the ball, at the time, but they were playing against the opposition's 1's.
In 2018, Smart played Fields and Downing at various times in relief of Fromm.
In 2019, Smart played Bennett and Priestly at various times in relief of Fromm.
In 2020, Smart played Daniels, Bennett and Mathis. All started at various times throughout the season.
In 2021, Smart played 4 different players at the QB position. Bennett, Daniels, Beck and Vandergriff.
IMO..."Quality time" is a relative term. Any game time is quality time and must be earned in practice. Coaches don't expect these young guys to go out and light the field on fire with the whole play book. They are looking for very specific things at game speed, which is practically impossible to achieve in practice. In the majority of cases,, depending on the QB and experience level,, they call a predetermined set of plays that will give them the film they need on that particular QB. The film will be critiqued in one-on-one/group sessions and worked on in practice.
BD61, operating from mostly memory. Memory serves me that the QB's including Daniels last year went in late 4th QTR and handed the ball off guessing 98% of the time.
If I chose to go through the stats game by game I could more than likely back up what I said. "Quality game time" to me would be when the QB was given the opportunity to run the entire offense, i.e. in the case of an injury to a QB in the game.
Who has been at UGA longer? Kirby or Stetson? 😜
I don't care who plays QB or for all this QB talk other than who is looking like Stet's backup. All this chatter about Kirby and the QB's, about this and that. The only thing that matters is who leaves and that may or may not happen. So truth is who knows anything about anything other than the coaching brain-trust? Nobody. And everybody. It's plain as day.
On another note. Did we all not learn by now to just trust Kirby? Best QB to win games for this years team, will be the QB. The rest is just something to talk about to pass the time. Past years do not matter. Different OC's. Different players/personnel. Different team year to year. Might need a rifle arm this year. But it would be an inexperienced one and that is risky, when you have much more experience than all of the others combined returning. Unless we need a gunslinger this year, job is 100% his.
