Mentioning/praising a player in a press conference is a masterful move by CKS. It reinforces the hard work a player is doing to develop. It also re-recruits a player into the program by expressing appreciation. It is short sighted by the media to think that UGA will only play 2 OT's. Of course, injuries could greatly impact any position. With the talent level in the room there really is no reason that AMims couldn't be a swing OT and get significant, meaningful PT spelling RJones and WMcClendon. UGA could easily go 2 deep all across the OL with significant playing time. UGA plays a lot of players across most positions which is a significant recruiting tool. What will be very interesting to keep an eye on from 4/17 - 4/30 is what OL opt into the TP rather than remain in a crowded UGA OL room.

I could be wrong have many times before. But I doubt Mims will leave UGA unless he feels he’s been grossly mistreated some where down the line and I haven’t heard any of that at all with Smart’s program. Mims has to much red & black heritage and devotion to up and leave UGA. Besides he knows that he’ll play Sooner than later at UGA. He’s gonna be an absolute beast for UGA and will Earn himself a very high draft pick in the NFL !! Go Mims & Willock !! Go Dawgs !!

The Dawgs have some very talented threes and even fours on the OL. Those are the players I expect to see in the portal. The twos for UGA are more like 1As. That’s the reason Jones was ready to step in at LT in the national championship game when it became necessary for Salyer to move to guard.

I just hope Friend doesn’t screw things up! The OL was a mess when Bobo did the Dawgs a favor and took him to Colorado State.

Stacy Searels is the UGA OL coach.

During the OL coach search I was not in favor of bringing back WFriend. Have no idea how good a coach he is. The UGA OL's of his era seemed to play pretty well. But UGA seemed to underachieve in recruiting OL during his time at UGA. Granted, it should easier to recruit to this UGA program than it was to that UGA program. 1) increased success bumps up recruiting 2) just more developed HS players in GA and across the country 3) usually more than 1 coach or the position coach recruit players. Still, with the success the UNC running game seemed to experience under SSearels it looks like UGA made a good hire.

I love how all these columns imply that Smart voluntarily offered the positive feedback about Mims or other players, and wasn’t just asked a direct question “What are your thoughts on the progression you’re seeing from Amarius Mims?”. Step 1) decide to write an article about Mims. 2) Ask Smart a direct question about Mims. 3) Write an article that makes it sound like Smart is going around telling everyone who will listen about how great Mims is

@Classof98 Kirby wasn't asked directly about Mims -- he offered up the positive comments with no question about the player or even the O-Line.

But yes, in some instances, reporters asked the head coach about a player and then write a story about what Kirby says -- he's the boss, and he lets you know where a player stands.

Among many other promises of this year's O-line, I'm excited to see two guys who have the builds of left tackle getting to a stage in their development where they're likely to be numbers one and two in the rotation for that very position. Both Jones and Mims are made for LT, while Salyer had to play somewhat out of position.

To boot, we have at least four guys who are best as guards competing for the two guard spots, a center-first center starting for the second straight year at center, and an experienced, more-than-solid RT at his best position.

Building experience at their natural positions is bound to be a real advantage with all the complex sets that need to be second nature for every offensive lineman. I'm soooo excited that OL looks to be a real strength for the team in the upcoming season. New coach is set up for success!
