My dad was a hydraulic mechanic for the birds on the USS Midway (CV-41) late 70's early 80's. He is a junkie for anything like this so I'm gonna take him this weekend. Gonna be blown away he probably hasn't seen a theater since he took me to star wars when I was 13. Also thank you for your service sir.
Too cool and thx for your service.
Broke down and took my wife and our middle daughter to see it.
It was really good! I guess I could nitpick, but it was a LOT of fun!
Kept waiting on Benji from Mission Impossible movies to say something to Cruise. Ha ha!
I was more disappointed in the theatre.
There is NOT a Dolby Atmos theatre within 35 miles, so we just went to a local theatre.
The picture seemed dark to me and we had to settle for the back row...I know, I know.
The speaker behind us was so loud that we couldn't hear the dialogue, so thankfully the theatre wasn't sold out and we went down about 5 rows. The seats weren't in the center, but on the right end of the row.
Oh, and I guess the adjacent theatre was showing Dr. Strange 2...the sound leakage was awful!
I'm excited to see it when it comes out on 4k to watch at home.
Have no plans to see any other film in a theatre...just too expensive for a possibly bad experience...unless you get the seats in the center it leaves something to be desired.
Ha I worked in television; thanks for you kind words, but I was not in the Air Force. I was a reporter for an ABC affiliate.
Now, when pilots talk about pulling 7Gs you know what they mean! The effect of the Gs are the part that most movies get wrong.
I do. We got up to 9 on my flight. I had to get a physical and some training before the actual day to physically prepare for it. It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.
Can’t wait to see it! My brother flew F-18s off The Midway when it steamed into the Gulf right before the second Gulf war.
He liked most parts of the first movie, others not so much……can’t wait to hear his reaction to this one!
That's actually a really good performance, especially if you didn't "toss your cookies." When GD designed that plane, they studied the max they thought wise to let a human endure, and 9 was the magic number, so you got as much as it can dole out (typical Dawg performance). You can go over to youtube and search "centrifuge training pass out," and you can watch military pilots pass out at lower levels.
Used to sail with my Dad around the Lexington down in Pensacola. The Navy Air Station gave tours, too.
The first one is a bit silly at times. It's iconic and probably the Navy's greatest recruiting tools of all time, but military guys do not wear dogtags while playing volleyball on the beach in jeans, and I never saw a pilot wear a cowboy hat in a flightsuit to a flight brief, and nobody sets up a classroom in a hangar on the flightline. Oh, and "buzzing the tower" will definitely get you grounded and in a lot of trouble. When military guys watch the old Top Gun these days, it's usually filled with lots of heckling.
Yeah, as to some of the dialogue between Ice and Mav while they were flying , I would ask my brother questions and he would just roll his eyes saying that it didn't ever happen that way!
As you said, for an audience of non-naval oriented people it was wonderful, but veteran naval aviators had some issues I'm sure!
Do pilots really say, "I've got tone, I've got tone" while being engaged by other enemy aircraft ?
Hah, that was one of my questions! Also, the need "30" or "15" seconds to get in position thing.....
Mostly for the audience in the cinema because I'm pretty certain the backseater could hear it, too, but the tone thing is legit. That's how the AIM-9 IR missile worked. The pilot would uncage the missile (from boresight or the radar lock) to see if the infrared tracker saw a valid source, and if the missile seeker was good it gave you a very distinct tone like that. If the tone was good, check range/shoot cue, and let it rip!
True for the aircraft firing....not sure there is a sensor that tells the other guy he's been locked on to. Pretty sure that is just a dramatic Hollywood thing.
I know the pilot gets a tone. I was questioning whether the pilot would be yelling out, "I've got tone, I've got tone"
I’m confused. Why would this be flagged?
Maybe we have some Russian Dawg fans here, or a fat finger? 😎
Oh right…..Maybe @pgjackson is an NSA enforcer…?😜😎
He could tell us, but then he would have to kill us …..
I'm sure some pantywaist was offended by the violent reference to blowing up an enemy aircraft...
