Kent St, Ap state, James Madison, WKY and others. There is a reason why

As we all know, the landscape of college football is changing…and changing fast.

But the one area it seems to be changing the most is the competitiveness of some G5 and FCS teams.

G5 and FCS teams are making statements every week. Ask Miami, A&M and ND. And I was in the stands for the Arky/Missouri St game. Arky should have lost…and it wouldn’t have been a fluke.

And there have been countless other examples.

Georgia didn’t play well on Saturday. Way too many mistakes. And I’m not suggesting that if Georgia and Kent St met up again…that Georgia wouldn’t beat them bad. Probably would. But Georgia is likely the best team in the country.

What is one factor that can challenge super talented but young players…age and experience. Grown a$$ men playing kids. How else can someone explain BYU.

Kent St showed up with 17 of 22 starters that were in their 4th, 5th or 6th year of college. And every starter was at least in their 3rd yr of college. And the second team was about as old. If Kent St would have pulled the upset…their entire starting 22 and most of their next 22…could have celebrated legally.

And 9 of those starters were transfers from likely P5 schools. These were no longer 2&3* athletes. They were physically developed grown a$$ men.

Part of it is the Covid year. There are a lot of college players in their 6th year. Obviously that trend will go away.

Their are 2 former Georgia players… that are in their 5th or 6th yr….that are having great seasons at Arkansas. Landers and Birini. Both players needed time to develop. And Arkansas is benefiting from Georgia’s S&C and coaching.

There are a number of G5 and FCS schools that have figured it out. Why spend time developing an 18 yr old, lower rated prospect, when you can get a full grown man that has just spent three years in the Iowa, Penn St or some other P5 team’s S&C program.

No, Georgia didn’t play well on Saturday….but Kent St had the size, strength, experience and ball$ to make Georgia pay for those mistakes.

Would a Kent St program from 5 yrs ago be able to do that? Very unlikely.

Great insight and something the casual fan never thinks about. At least we have the benefit of a 24 year old qb to guide the young pups.

You make a good point @texdawg I hadn’t thought of that. People take a huge jump usually from the ages of 19-20 to 22-23. Physically, mentally, and emotionally most people mature a good bit in these years. Well brought up on your part here.

😂, I don’t know, he was losing his stomach against South Carolina and played well. It’s possible, considering his history that this guy responds very well to adversity. And even if not, a few Lucky or driven athletes are just winners in the face of adversity. Montana jump started his legacy in the Chicken Soup bowl so who knows.

Of course I’m kidding, I hope Stet refrains from partying too hard until after the game. And yes I have compared Stet to the great Joe Montana. No, he isn’t Joe Cool, but he is the mailman. And he always delivers!

Would this trend lead to a long-term negative impact on HS scholly numbers?

Or, just a Covid kink in the scholly pipeline...then things return to normal??

It’s had a huge impact on high school recruiting….about 30% fewer scholarships.

But eventually that should change when the pipeline empties out.

Great insight. I agree those group of 5 and FCS schools have older players almost across the board compared to power 5. Makes sense
