Kirby Smart isn’t pulling any punches when it comes to how Georgia has “struggled” -- in his words — scoring touchdowns in the red zone.

Accuracy has been a problem in the redzone. But Coaching has been a problem too. CKS settles for FG's far too often. Play calling on 3rd down has often been puzzling (and the #1 culprit) as well. The "fade" route has to be the worst play in football. By design it is a 50/50 ball. It rarely works. It is a very low percentage play. Running the fade on 3rd down almost guarantees 4th down and a FG attempt. UGA runs it (the fade) too much. Now if you threw the fade to DWash it would work more often but Monken never calls that. Maybe he is saving that look for when he needs it.
As for the OL it needs to improve its pass blocking and really needs to improve its run blocking. The IOL, as big as it is, is not blowing people off the ball, dominating or consistently opening holes. This is compounded by the fact that UGA doesn't have a battering ram RB like ZWhite. UGA must improve the running game before the big games later this year.

How many targets does Darnell Washington have in the red zone? Whatever the answer is it’s not enough.
Where I have seen drives bog down and have to settle for field goals is when we're moving the ball down the field through the air and then it's 1st down somewhere between the other teams 15-25 yard line and we decide to run it and we get say 6-7 yards which is a good gain, now it's 2nd and 3 or 4 so we call another run thinking we just got 7 surely we can get 3-4 yards except we don't, we get say 1 or no gain, now it's 3rd and 3-4 and we've got one shot with a pass to get the 1st.
Where we were committed to the pass to get us down the field we just switched back to running it 2 out of 3 downs? HUH? If you only have to defend 1 throw on 3rd down the defense might step up and pressure SB or he could simply make an errant throw, or the defender can make a play, however I don't see too many defenses stopping SB and the passing attack if you give him 2 passing plays or at least a passing situation to where SB can decide to run it himself if receivers are covered to get 3-4 yards.
THe moment you take the ball out of Bennets hands and give it to a RB with an offensive line that is sporadic at best in run blocking the more you limit yourself from picking up a 1st down and keeping the chains moving towards the endzone and keeping Jack off the field.
UGAdad made a good point that I made after the 3rd game about fades or jump balls. Twice in a row on one drive SB tried to hit the short in stature Ladd in the endzone on a jump type ball or trying to lob it over the defender's head to where only Ladd could get it. I love Ladd but that's not going to be his strength trying to high point a ball and wrestle it away from a defender. Hard tobelieve that was a designed play to Ladd instead of your money guy Brock on a jump ball.

Good points. Just emphasizes the need to get the running game up to the UGA standard. Until UGA can establish some go to running plays (and lose the fade to McConkey) with a high probability of success they will struggle in the red zone.
Would rather see SBIV moved around in the pocket, let the play develop and see what's there, rather than 3 step drop and throw up a 50/50 fade coverage be damned.
thedec's theory about last week's game may be put to the test this week. Thedec's assertion was that Monken called plays to "try out" vs an inferior opponent to get SBIV out of his comfort zone to expand the O and his route tree game reps.
If that is true can we expect the same this week relative to the OL and running game vs a good but not great run D?
Stetson isn't delivering accurate passes. Hopefully, he will get his arms around this problem ;)
All good points, @UGADad20 , especially about the woebegone fade route. Why is that even in playbooks. But I'm really worried about UGA's running game, especially if Milton (or is it McIntosh) is limited this Saturday and beyond). I mea, it seems that if we had a first and goal from the 5 yard line, we wouldn't be able to run it in unless we use a D-lineman as a lead blocker, which when you break it all down, is sort of a gimmick play. We just can't line up and consistently have our guys beat their guys. And though I hate to say it, Tate Ratledge looks lost out there. Don't know whether he's still not fully recovered or he's just regressed, but just watch him Saturday. He's routinely getting beat on blocks and he's slow off the ball. Guess we'll find out in the weeks to come whether the boys will answer Kirby's challenge or not. Go Dawgs!
