A big thank-U to all U.S. veterans who have sacrificed for this nation, especially those who have become impaired in some way due to their service. May God bless U and UR family.

Go Dawgs!

Very very few people today have any idea of the carnage that was WWI. Thanks to all of you vets , millons of your countrymen and women have lived our entire lives and more importantly raised our families in peace and freedom. That peace was bought with your service and we appreciate it and you!

WWI was, and always will be, unique in human history. Truly a horrific period of humanity. Civil War Era tactics fought with modern weaponry. The trenches were caused by failed massed frontal assaults that had been the standard combat maneuver for millennia. The first modern war. The world had never seen such carnage. The biggest battle of the Civil War, Gettysburg, had 50,000 total casualties. The Battle of the Somme had about 1.2M casualties. Staggering. I teach a class on some of this stuff.

After reading the Guns of August and seeing that every High Command in Europe had spent years going over the terrain where the next war would be fought. And all concurred it would not last over a few months.. I just wonder how we will survive now that we could be so wrong again, but now we have nuclear weapons?
