Why stop at 24? There's a whole 7-8 month stretch of the year that we're leaving completely untapped. I say make it 128 - no, 256. Let's get the FCS in on this, maybe even bring in some Division II schools if we have to. Because if there's one thing the sport needs, it's more playoff games. For added intrigue, we could implement a more "web-like" bracket, as well as a complex system for determining who gets byes, when.
Now, I know what everyone is thinking, so I'll address the elephant in the room. I think if we stretch it out to a two-year championship we should still have some room to slip a regular season somewhere in there. We can still begin each cycle on Labor Day weekend because, you know, we don't want to go crazy with a bunch of unnecessary changes. We're not trying to make a mockery of the sport here, we just need to do our due diligence to ensure that every middling team gets a shot at the title, and as we all know, there's only one way to do that.
So let's have at it! Ex-pan-sion! Ex-pan-sion! Everybody! Ex-pan...
@E_Roc...you know, normally you and I are on the same page, but I guess we're not this time.
I see no logic in your argument or cynicism. The FCS is already doing a 24-team playoff successfully. I guess those kids are tougher than the ones in FBS and can handle it. Even high school playoffs have more teams and games in many States than our current 4-team playoff.
I laid out some of my additional thoughts in the post below yours, so I won't expand further. All I can say is I am overwhelmingly for the playoff expansion and wish it would go further. I think it will eventually.
Get on the train or get left behind.
@E_Roc ....that was hilarious. I'm jealous that I didn't think of it. Your post highlights the absurdity of the Neverending CFP Expansion. LOL
@Silver_Britches ...I'm never going to gripe about MORE football games. Lol. But, you do have a point regarding injury.
Maybe they should take a look at how a season is played. I.e., play a 10-game schedule, with either 1 or 2 out-of-Conference games...no Cupcakes.
MontanaDawg, it wasn't meant to be an argument, per se. I guess I thought my stance on the issue was well enough established by now that it's more about venting at this point, hence the heavy-handed sarcasm. But all snark aside, I don't think you understand my position (perhaps more my fault than yours in this particular instance, though I'm generally surprised considering how much we've both commented on the subject). It has nothing to do with any issue of toughness or hardship for the players. I suppose some make that argument, but I don't feel strongly about it either way. And I'm aware that the FCS already has a ridiculous (to me) number of teams in its playoff. To whatever extent I was trying to make a point below, it was about the effect that playoff expansion will have on the overall quality of the sport/FBS. But as I've intimated, I've already commented so much about that, that I'll spend the rest of this response focusing on your points below. For brevity's sake I'll paraphrase each before responding.
"Bowl season is a joke so we might as well expand the playoff." - Yes, bowl season has gotten out of hand. But the quality and significance of bowl season and the size of the playoff field are two completely separate issues. As I've said before (in a recent post to which I believe you responded), there are ways to salvage and reinvigorate bowl season which have absolutely nothing to do with expanding the playoff. So, I don't see this as a relevant argument.
"Conference championships" - I didn't know how to paraphrase this argument any further because I don't know how it's supposed to pertain to the topic of playoff expansion. If anything, it comes across as an example in an anti-expansion argument.
"It's called the College Football Playoff Top 25, so they should all be included in the playoff." - Just a pure semantics argument. They call it that simply, and obviously, because, as you acknowledge, the point is to identify the teams that will play in the playoff. They go out beyond the actual playoff field for context and transparency, in addition to the historical convention of using 25-team rankings. If they only ever showed the top four, everyone would wonder, even more than they already do, where these decisions were coming from. And it provides frame of reference for all the teams in the poll that don't make the cut. There's no rule, implied or otherwise, that every team in a "playoff ranking" has to actually participate in the playoff itself. Besides, if people really wanted to make this a sticking point (which I have a hard time envisioning) all they would have to do is change the name. Problem solved, no expansion required.
"An expanded playoff may result in more parity." - This already seems hypothetical, so I'm not sure how much of a response it warrants. I mean, sure. We'll see, I guess.
Anyway, sorry if any offense was taken with the sarcasm. It wasn't personal. It's just that I care more about this sport than any other, and I whole-heartedly believe it will be downgraded by playoff expansion. It doesn't mean I'm going to stop watching - again, I care too much about the sport itself to do that. But I do find it troubling, and after years of debate I still have yet to encounter a pro-expansion argument that I don't consider to be easily dismantled. And it just gets kind of maddening watching the "dark side" slowly win with flimsy talking points.
Before I comment on the topic I want to apologize to you. I got really sarcastic and went way over board in comments to you a while back and I’m sorry. I’m Very passionate about the Dawgs. And very opinionated. All to many times TO opinionated. So I hope you’ll accept my apologies. Wow !! And just Wow !! You preached it here !! It IS All about the Almighty $$$ !! And for all those entities you just named here. BUT I’m an addict for CFB, more Especially our Dawgs. P.T. Barnum said: “There’s a sucker born every day”. Guess Ole P.T. was talking about Me Lol !! Because I’ll watch. And I’ll pony up the $$ to watch if I can. I confess again I’m an addict. But speaking For Me, the CFB Playoff Committee seems to struggle mightily to get a four team play off right !! How in the world will they come close to getting a 12 team play off right ?? Beats me for sure. Imho it just takes an already sticky issue and makes it even worse !! Hope You and family have a Great post season watching our beloved Dawgs in action and from Me and My family to You and yours, We Wish You A Very Merry Christmas !! Let’s hope Kirby brings us another Natty on his sleigh !! Go Dawgs !!
I’ll be totally honest I certainly don’t understand all the parameters and nuances that a 12 team playoff would represent. But I DO Know this I’m ALL Dawgs fan. Anything that is Good for them I like, anything that is Bad for them I dislike. I am ALL homer when it comes to the Dawgs. I really don’t care much about Other teams, unless something that happens with them will be Good for our Dawgs. I’m certainly not the sharpest knife in the drawer so Again I readily admit I don’t understand all the particulars ( or even most Lol) of a 12 team playoff. But my rather ample gut tells me it will be Bad news for our Dawgs.Speaking For Me it seems by all I see that the College Football Playoff Committee struggles mightily to Try to get things right with only a four team playoff !! How in the world will they get things right with a 12 team playoff ??!!?? It’s coming whether I like it or not, just like NIL. So I will accept it. I Love Dawgs football way to much to stop watching now. But I’ve got bad vibes about it. I sure hope our Dawgs can win Another Natty this year, NOW while it’s still more readily attainable. Cause an Already tough, tough up hill climb might just get Much tougher. P.S. We are pretty sure that media weighs in pretty heavy with the Committees decisions, at least from most people’s comments it sure seems that way. So how much More might media bias weigh in ?? Will we see Ohio St., Michigan, and Notre Dame rotating who gets the Natty every year ?? After all the media tries just about every year to plug those three in !! Beats me, I don’t know.
Doesn't matter, Navy. Just guarantees that the Dawgs will be in the playoffs, every year.
Can you imagine, the # of Natty's Mark Reicht would've racked-up between 2001 and 2015? He would've made the playoffs almost every year. And, his teams were always hitting on all cylinders by the end of the year.
Nope...what you see, is a group of people that are cautiously optimistic. "Change" for the sake of change, isn't necessarily heading in the right direction.
12 teams, SMH? 6 Conference Champions? I don't see how that's going to Improve anything except bank accounts and post season football watchin'. The top 2 or 3 teams will still prevail...95% of the time.
But, let's look at the other 5%. It's conceivable that we will wind up with a 3 or 4 loss Champion at some point. A 3-loss Purdue or Tulane could get "Hot" and "Lucky" (peak) at just the right time...and take home the trophy.
Guess what'll happen next. They'll be discussing, "scaling the CFP back to 6 or 8 teams". We're just trying to get out in front of it. There should be ZERO Automatic Qualifiers. ZEROOOO! That will be the first thing to go, in the new format...IMO.
