Opinion: Georgia and Ohio State don’t need much shared history to be rivals
Georgia and Ohio State have only played one time before Saturday, and that game was 30 years ago. Yet the Bulldogs probably have more of a rivalry with the Buckeyes than many realize.

BA. Great read—I know you are the face and voice of DN Daily, but we would love to read more from you! Jeff has recruiting and can provide some TLTF stories. Connor provides lots of great stat’s, albeit with the occasional editing issues. And Mike provides deep insight while being way too neutral on a Dawg friendly site-plus his bro-mance with Pruitt is over the top.
We Dawg fans need more of your thoughts of full Dawg fan with great content.
Interesting article, Brandon, especially the fact that both teams have the same number of national championships since 1942. A lot of people say they would pull for almost anyone vs ND, but, out of the SEC, I’d pull against osu vs almost anyone. Go Dawgs!! Crack some nuts!!
I'll admit it. I even rooted for Florida against the bucknuts...but if Auburn played them, I'd be in a pickle.
This entire column is bizarre. First off, no one is going to determine that Georgia offers a better quality of life than Ohio based on who wins a football game. Particularly considering how Athens has only 125,000 of Georgia's 11 million population and while Columbus is much bigger - 900,000 and indeed nearly twice as much as Atlanta proper - it is still a small fraction.
Second, this column glosses over a vital thing: to gain national recognition, you need to either A. win a national title, B. finish in the top 5. or C. win a conference title and play in a major bowl game. Granted, neither Ohio State or Georgia has done A. much. But B. and C.? Ohio State has done this WAY more than Georgia has. The simplest way to measure this: appearances in major bowl games (Sugar, Rose, Orange, Fiesta). Georgia has 15. Good. Ohio State has 27.
Modern times are even worse. Ohio State has been a regular in the top 10 and major bowl games since the John Cooper era in 1988 and sustained it through the Tressel, Meyer and now Day eras. During that time they have won 2 national titles and made either the title game or playoff 8 times. By contrast, take away the Herschel Walker era in the early 80s and the current Kirby Smart run and all you is have the 02, 05 and 07 Sugar Bowls. And ... Ohio State won the 02 national title and played the 07 one! Even in 05, Ohio State won the Fiesta while UGA lost the Sugar.
In summary, OSU has been nationally relevant under more coaches in a row (4) than has UGA in its 123 year history: Wally Butts (40s), Vince Dooley (60s and 80s), Mark Richt and Kirby Smart. So UGA would need to win another title and regularly win the SEC for another 15 years just to equal what Ohio State has accomplished since the Cooper era. And oh yeah, Ohio State would have to fall to being no better than UGA was during the Jim Donnan era at least.
And this is actually being charitable, by claiming that Ohio State only became nationally relevant under John Cooper. It ignores that Earle Bruce took Ohio State to two Rose Bowls (1979, 1984) and two Fiesta Bowls (1980, 1983). Honestly, the Earle Bruce era under Ohio State was basically the UGA era under Mark Richt. Bruce had a 75% winning percentage at Ohio State; Richt had a 74% at UGA. Richt and Bruce also won the same number of outright conference titles (2). Richt did have a better record in big bowl games than Bruce, 2-1 to 1-3, but Bruce went to 1 more. But UGA fans regard Mark Richt much more favorably than Ohio State fans do Earle Bruce so I won't argue with them, other than to point out that the standards do appear to be higher in Columbus, as no way Jim Donnan or Ray Goff would have been fired after one bad season with a 75% won/loss record over 9 years.
And finally, there is no Ohio State/UGA "rivalry", or even any basis for being one. UGA and Ohio State didn't even regularly play each other in the "didn't win the Big 10 or SEC so this is the consolation game" Citrus Bowl. However, Ohio State and Tennessee did regularly in the 1990s back when Fulmer couldn't beat Spurrier and Cooper couldn't beat Lloyd Carr at Michigan.
Unlike Ohio State, Georgia doesn't bend the truth to make themselves look better. UGA doesn't even claim the titles it should. Fact is, Georgia was recognized as the 1946 National Champions by the Williams ranking system. While the AP had us ranked #3 (SEC hatred was real even back then), the fact is we were the only unbeaten and untied team that year and Sugar Bowl Champs.
The reality is we have four National Championships yet UGA refuses to claim the 1946 title. However, remember UGA didn't claim the 1942 championship either until Vince Dooley made the case for it.
GO DAWGS!!!
@thadec
Wow, that’s quite a comment. It may be longer than the actual article that it critiques. If our Dawgs are as committed to defeating the OSU Buckeyes as you are to trashing this article, we are in for a treat!
GO DAWGS!
Well I see thadec has a high opinion of Ohio State. Let's examine what he said shall we?
1) "Columbus is much bigger - 900,000 and indeed nearly twice as much as Atlanta"
That is actually a deception that Columbus purposely, and falsely advertises. Anything to make them look like they are a true metropolitan city. Except they're not. Columbus is quite large land wise at over 220 sq. miles compared to just over 136 sq. miles for Atlanta. The true indicators about Columbus is the fact the the Columbus metro area has a population of 2,078,725 while the Atlanta Metro area has a population of 6,144,050. So the reality is Atlanta is nearly three times bigger than Columbus.
In short there is a reason the NFL, MLB and NBA ignore Columbus. Just like a dirty yankee school to try and manipulate the population figures for a pointless bragging right.
Thadec then said:
2) "Ohio State has done thisWAYmore than Georgia has. The simplest way to measure this: appearances in major bowl games (Sugar, Rose, Orange, Fiesta). Georgia has 15. Good.Ohio State has 27"
Hmmm...why not measure all bowl games thadec? Oh because that changes your narrative doesn't it?
Bowl Total: Georgia 59 - Ohio State 53
Bowl wins: Georgia 35 - Ohio State 26.....a losing record? Really? Wow, what a team.

3) "OSU has been nationally relevant under more coaches in a row (4) than has UGA in its 123 year history: Wally Butts (40s), Vince Dooley (60s and 80s), Mark Richt and Kirby Smart. So UGA would need to win another title and regularly win the SEC for another 15 years just to equal what Ohio State has accomplished since the Cooper era"
What thadec forget to mention is the fact that the Big 10 has been a two horse race for most of it's existence. Michigan and Ohio state have historically been the only reliable strong teams. Lastly, Ohio State Trails Michigan in their rivalry race by a ton. No doubt if Ohio State had to deal with Alabama, LSU, Florida( during their 20 year run) Tennessee etc. they would have far less wins and conference titles.
In the real summary, no teams on earth has been gifted more than Michigan and Ohio State. Further, no teams have done less with their gifts. At least Michigan ranks number 1 in all time wins.
Hey thadec, the Bucknuts have their own page. You don't have to troll here.
thadec, who’s your team?
One of your best articles yet, Brandon. And yeah, none of us can stand “The” Ohio State. I might pull for the Iranian National team against OSU. Let’s Go Dawgs!
