ATHENS — Georgia added an eye-opening 21 mid-term enrollees, and according to Warren Brinson, many of them are opening eyes.

UGA doesn't appear to have anybody ready to be an OL wrecker like JCarter or JDavis. But there are numerous mature, returning DL that look ready to elevate their play this season. Brinson, Logue, Stackhouse should all be better this season. Youngsters Alexanter, CMiller and MWilliams should all make a big step up this season.
This year's D is shaping up as the potentially better than last year's D.
@UGADad20 I agree, and I think that's the one thing that holds me back from getting on board with the "this defense will be better than any of them" bandwagon. Not saying it won't happen -- it might -- but I have not yet identified the next sure-fire first-round pick
I do believe that this year's D (by the FU game) will be better than last year's D (post Nolan Smith) for a few reasons. Multiple, high upside OLB's will be developed. Depth at ILB and DL. "Stickier" CB's and added skill and depth at S.
More experienced, traditional coverage CB's populate the '23 roster. KRingo was a solid CB with timely, big play ability. But Lassiter, Green, Everette, Humphrey and Harris are quick twitch, traditionally skilled CB's that should provide tighter coverage.
Tyreke Smith should be returning to AA form following 2 years of knee rehab. MStarks and Bullard should both take the next development step with maturing skills. Depth at S will be improved with DJackson's return and the addition of DBouie and JAguero.
All these factors suggest that the '23 D will be as good as any unless injuries derail multiple players.

Recall 2017. One play - the INT in the 3rd quarter after which UGA only made 3 first downs spread across 2 drives - from a national title with no Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, Devonte Wyatt or Travon Walker. The strength of that defense was Roquan Smith - an ILB used like a rover - and a secondary that had DeAndre Baker, Richard LeCounte plus seniors Aaron Davis and Dominick Sanders. This allowed UGA to do a lot of disguised coverages and blitzes that fooled everyone but Baker Mayfield. The other good but not great players in the front seven were good enough to stop the run and benefit from all the attention paid to Smith in order to get free and rush the passer.
UGA doesn't have a single OLB as good as Smith but collectively they are better than the 2017 LB unit. The secondary meanwhile is just as experienced as the 2017 group but has more future draft picks, and that doesn't even count Tykee Smith and Smoke Bouie. They can match the 2022 defense but in a different way.
RSmith was an ILB. JDJ and SMondon may not be as good as Roquan Smith but they may be before they leave UGA. With substitutes JWalker, CJ, Raylen and Troy (and an easier schedule), JDJ and Mondon are more likely to play the season w/o being beat down. Raising their level of play by season's end.
With respect to Baker, LeCounte, Davis and Sanders (3 of which had no NFL careers to speak of) those guys do not measure up to the amount of talent that currently resides in the UGA defensive backfield.
The weakness of the '23 D is the youth at OLB. 2 of those guys will have to step up to maintain the UGA D standard of '21-'22. 2 should. Iron sharpens iron. The other weakness is the DL. The DL has experience, talent, depth and potential. It doesn't have that 1 unblockable player. Multiple guys need to raise their levels and probably will. Mykel Williams looks like the next star.
