Smart is the master at taking what you are already good at and getting you to take it to another level. Luckie dude is as good a blocker coming out of HS at TE as you will find.
@Kconnorriley: Thank you for the Good Dawgs of the Day. Today's was excellent. Another fringe benefit of being a Dawg fan. It's not like Florida's going to have a "Gator of the Day" anytime soon!
Regarding the TEs: I'm excited at Bowers, Delp, Lawson and Spurlin athleticism. But I'm eager to see if any can serve as the "sixth OL" in a 12-man D. Obviously, we can't expect another Big O, but none of these guys yet has the mass of, say, the under-appreciated John Fitzpatrick. With all the receiving talent we have and with new tackles, I imagine we could use someone playing that role from the second TE position. Very glad to read about Lawson's versatility and toughness!
IMO...Washinton's contribution...while valuable...is being completely overstated. Either that...or the capabilities of the other 3 TE's are being undervalued. Bowers can put a "pancake block" on film, too. I saw him (and others) make numerous blocks, over the last 2 yrs.
A TE that can't block a LB or CB/Safety...shouldn't be playing TE.
There's only a handful of D-linemen in the SEC that would give the Dawgs TE group a "problem". But, it's not a "deal beaker", with respect to using a 12 or 13 offensive set.
Lol...how many times does ANY team EVER depend on the TE to block a NT or DT? In fact...I don't think I remember, one instance of Washington...or, any other TE having to "make a block" on an interior DL, they "didn't make". If the TE has to block down on a DT...he usually has assistance from the OT or FB. You don't need a giant to play the game.
The Dawgs TE Room will be more than capable, "Physically & Athletically", to run a 12 or 13 (if needed);...however, with 3 of last year's TE's leaving, that could prove foolhardy.
Bowers, Delp, Lucky, Spurlin....2 with experience...2 rookies. No time for pressing the TE position. It's a shame, that Seither left. This could've been his year to pull a Fitzpatrick. Now...no one will know his name. Too bad.
