I've got a quibble with the way y'all do this. It's a small thing but it matters in understanding how much playing time a player may get or who stands between him and being a starter ... or in just getting it right!
When you show two players at a certain depth with a slash between them, it makes sense because sometimes there isn't a clear No. 1 or No. 2 or No. 3 guy. For example, Mykel Williams may be better in certain sets than Trammel Walthour, and visa-versa. I'd rather you actually chose who you think truly is No. 1. But at least showing a tie between them makes sense.
But it makes zero sense (for example, again) to then list Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins as No. 2 on the depth chart. He's No. 3 because two guys are in front of him. This is important because you're not really showing in certain position (we're three deep at DE -- not too deep) or who stands between Ingram-Dawkins and playing time.
I doubt many other readers are as persnickety as I am about this sort of thing. But I just wish y'all would change that illogical practice.
According to this UGA goes 5(!) deep at NT but only 3 deep at DE. If I recall correctly Jefferson and Logue have also played other positions on the DL. But no mention of that?
Didn't Logue play some DT? Can CMiller play some DT now that Bear has moved on? Didn't Jefferson play some DE? IF GHarris is truly 250+ lb can he also slot in at DE as an added pass rusher?
Getting the pass rush developed quickly will be the key to this D's success. The CB's have not progressed as much as anticipated so far. Lassiter, while a good tackler and big hitter, was not particularly "sticky" in coverage last season. The youngsters aren't even at his level yet. Bouie has been surprisingly quiet so far. What did he do for a yr at aTm?
Nice to have an experienced S like DJackson back to take game reps and reduce the chance for injuries to the starters. Must've been a heck of foot injury he had to keep him out a full year.
Hopefully the freshmen S's progress quickly. The depth at S has not looked particularly good. Continuing to cross train and play DSmith at Star would seem to be a wise move.
Lotsa youth and growth potential. Coaches have development challenges to try and make the 3peat reality.
Great comment, Dad20. Without lockdown corners, the DL and OLBs will have create pressure quickly. Seems to me that the highest upside among potential starters (other than Lassiter) is Everette. He's approaches Kilee Ring in size and speed, but I'll be pleasantly surprised if he plays like Ringo did in his first season as a starter.
The only place I'd differ from you regards safety. Particularly since they seem comfortable moving Bullard over, safety seems reasonably deep, IMO. We've got two really good starters plus David Daniel-Sisavanh, Smoke Bouie and a really good looking freshman in Aguero -- not to mention JaCorey Thomas, Justin Rhett and Dan Jackson. Jackson started last season as the strong safety starter -- didn't he? Now, he's probably the No. 3 option at free safety.
You stated some things that I glossed over. Freshmen S's Aguero and Rhett looked better than freshmen. But to count on freshmen is to ask for another 2nd and 26 at the absolute worst time. Even MStarks let 2 TD's get over his head (TN, FU) on plays he should've made.
Dan Jackson is a known and can take the load off the FS and SS and hopefully help keep the starters healthy. . I like Bullard at SS and TSmith at star. With Starks, Bullard and TSmith are NFL players.
DDS always seems to be out of position and JThomas has not done anything to distinguish himself. Both look to be passed pretty quickly by the freshman. Hence, UGA cannot afford injuries to Starks, Bullard or TSmith. The silence regarding Bouie has been very interesting. You hear almost nothing about him. You hear absolutely nothing about Marcus Washington in the year he has been on campus.
Everette (and at times Green) showed a lot of promise last year. That's why it was so surprising when wr's were running free all over the field on GDay.
Young players need to grow up fast for a 3 peat but even to win the SEC.
Yes, I'm Starks, Bullard and TSmith (healthy) could be an all-star corps. I do think Everette could rise to that level this year. And Lassiter is going to be one year better, so if he ends up our weakest starting DB, we'll be in great shape. (Although, it is could to note that CSmith probably made everybody better.)
And, yeah, I was wondering the same thing about Bouie. Of course, he could be just taking some time getting used to UGA.
