Kirby Smart ready to turn up heat on Georgia QB competition, see who goes ‘full metal jacket’
ATHENS — The Georgia quarterback position ultimately comes down to one thing: Trust.

Barring injury everyone knows Beck WILL be the starter.
If there is one thing I know for sure is that Kirby Smart and Company will ALWAYS play the individuals who give the TEAM the highest percentage of success on each play. Now, when considering the QB position....3rd and short yardage....Vandagriff, 1st and 10, the D is stacked to stop the run.....Beck, 4th QTR with a 30 point lead....Stockton, Tight receiver coverage....Vandagriff, Light coverage....Beck. I fully expect to see Beck and Vandagriff get meaningful snaps with Beck being the Alpha Starter.
I really like what I'm hearing from Kirby on QB. He's more confident in his discussions on the QB position. Makes sense because he has seen a lot in the last 7 years. He is talking about the right stuff now, and seems to be holding his offense to a higher standard. I think that bodes well for '23 and following.
Look. I think Kirby would love it if Griff were close enough to Beck to let Kirby give it to him.
Problem is that Beck was a notch and half better than Griff in the spring game. Kirby is giving Griff every chance in the book to prove he is on par with Beck.
Problem is Beck is just a better qb. He has a better release and a better and more accurate arm.
Griff is better at scrambling.
So Griff is going to have to have the best fall camp ever to win this job. If he does win it then you know he earned it.
I'm not sure I agree with writing Gunner off...just yet.
That kid is talented, smart, confident and has what both Beck and BVG have, in spades. His Dad was a HC and he grew up doing some of the things Smart is talking about...just for fun, before his HS days. It's second nature to him.
So...depending on how that 2nd scrimmage goes...he could very well be the Dawgs' QB of the future. I realize BVG and Beck have their fans...and, the media seems to be backing Beck...again.
But...if what you and everybody else, are saying is true...that, "Kirby will only play the guy that gives them the best chance to win". Then...that could be any of the three.
IMO...Just because Beck has more game experience. It doesn't necessarily give him a leg up...unless he graded-out perfect in his decision-making and execution on postgame film analysis. As fans...there's no way for us to know that...until we see who gets under center in September.
I'll tell you one thing...I would pay just about anything to get to see those final 2 scrimmages. I might have to do a little politicin' to see if I can get in. Lol
Another thing that i look at sideways...and, I'm pretty sure, it's not just an opinion, unless something's changed...but, everybody keeps referencing "The Spring Game" when discussing QB's as if that was really a game.
I assure you, it's not. No HC uses the Spring Scrimmage to evaluate a quarterback. He may throw a few wrinkles at the QB to test a particular aspect of his game. But, only if, all the other position's data points have been collected.
To be clear...that's not the case with teams that live and die on the "passing, hurry-up offense". Those guys (OSU, Bama) play football like sandlot ball anyway. No intelligence required. Lol
There IS a plan or strategy with an agenda going into that "game". It's just like any other practice, in reality. The strategy is usually, to work the RB's, WR's, DB's, OL and DL...different groupings and pairings...and...to light up the scoreboard and "create" excitment for the "Fans & Media". Kinda like a dress rehearsal in a play.
The idea is to generate "Fan" excitement and support...even if you have to take your best defenders out of the game, to give your offense a chance...like Bama did in '22's A-Day game.
The other position groups are limited in what they can and can't do...so, you can only evaluate for certain things. But, not everything.
The "main plan" for the quarterback is to remain healthy. The "secondary plan" could be to observe his footwork, mechanics, ball handling, decision-making (limited), huddle command...any of a number of things that we, as fans, may...or may not even be aware of.
What we think was the QB's failure...could actually be another players failure...and, the QB did everything right. So, I don't put any confidence into "what I saw in the Spring Game". Based on last Spring's game...Erik Gilbert and Dillon Be)l should've been starting, last year.
I'm sure UGA's coaching staff got what they needed out of the "scrimmage"...from everybody...QB's included.
IMO....IF...Gunner Stockton overtook Beck and BVG in the Spring...there's not a chance in hell, Kirby announces that, before the last Fall Scrimmage...if then. To anybody. I'm sure they're keeping their "true evaluations" close to the vest. Absolutely nothing to gain from doing "The Jimbo Fisher Blab Lab" with the Press. Lol
BTW...I agree with you. I think Beck could actually be the Dawgs first Heisman Winner, since The Herschel was in Athens. But...If Stockton (or BVG) is good enough to overtake Him....my gawd! is all I can say. Lol
I actually think the Spring Game serves a couple purposes. First, it does show the most realistic setting for qbs performing under pressure and whether or not they have down the calls, formations, etc. So it is more of a baseline eliminator of sorts.
I think it also shows level of effort and things players need to work on. So I think it is a good barometer. Our spring game this year was probably the best spring game from an organization and execution standpoint of any I've been to (been to about 6 over the last 20 years).
That being said it is the spring game and sometimes things can be overhyped one way or another. I do know that if you drop 2 balls like Delp did that that shows me a lack of focus/effort. Anyways, players make plays and Bowers showed up and did his thing. Beck looked great. Griff looked pretty good and Gunnar looked pretty good. Roderick looked solid but as we all know the Ewers kid (probably misspelled that) looked great.
