Yes, I'd say one of the keys on defense for this season to have a chance for us even making the playoffs is an effective, havoc-producing, disrupting pass rush.

cfbstats.com is saying we have no qb hurries through 4 games. Not sure how they calculate it but that sounds pretty bad. We have 1 fumble recovery through 4 games.

Not sure what is going on with our defense but we need the guys who are out there to start stripping the ball. I feel like our defense is a lot better than our stats?

Mykel needs to keep his eyes open. cfbstats says no QB hurries that has to be wrong. Pretty sure some QBs have been hurried.

We need to get back to imposing our will on people and being the hunters and not the hunted!

I'll be curious to see how Bobo goes with his play calling. Will we come out and really try to establish the run game and get stuffed on first and second down setting up a 3rd and long and putting CB behind the 8 ball or will we come out like we did against say, Michigan, Oregon or TCU and just have a really good mixture of plays, but throwing alot on 1st down?

We haven't shown so far, even against lesser opponents, that we can just lineup and run the ball down your throat. We generally have to throw in order to open up the run. We didn't get going last week until Bobo made a concerted effort to get the ball to #19.

It’s gonna come together. The Dawgs CAN apply pressure when it’s needed. That is in many cases. Like the article said about the second half of the SC game. Sacked Rattler twice and caused him to throw Two INTs. And as we know Rattler is a pretty darn good QB. Being more experienced I think we saw an Even better version of him.

First half not so great. Second half Kirby goes in the locker room gets some info. from his coaching staff, try’s to motivate the players, Makes Some Necessary Changes and goes on to Dominate the second half.

Many times, Not all the time, or maybe even Most of the time, but many times that almost seems like a Kirby Smart identity. He and the Dawgs seem like a Second Half Team. Think the playoffs vs OSU. Now some will say yeah but Beck ain’t no Stetson Bennett. No he’s Not at THIS point, but he’s doing pretty darn well, and who’s to say how much Better he will be by seasons end ?? The same thing can be said of our Offense as a whole. Like wise same thing for our Defense.

This team is Loaded with talent and Loaded with potential. NO WAY is Kirby and his staff just gonna sit back and get lax and let this team stagnate !! The goal should be Keep Winning !!

I caution my fellow Dawgs fans in a respectful and loving way Don’t Worry About points and scores !! What we want and Need is for our Dawgs to keep posting W’s !! Now I say that here, Today, but if you look at my comments on game day you’ll see many times, panic, frustration, even anger !! And you could Rightfully question is THIS the same guy that’s constantly saying how much he Trusts Kirby Smart ?? 😂 Well on game day that’s the Emotional ME most of the time. But in between games it’s the more rational ME that comments.

Kirby and staff have got this !!! As long as they keep putting up the W’s our hopes and dreams of a 3Peat are alive and well and Reasonable to. These Dawgs WILL Improve as the season goes on !! Bank on it !! BELIEVE In Them, no matter how much “Noise” outside our own fanbase !!

Our Rivals and Numerous ( Most) of the “Expert” Talking Heads, WANT our Dawgs to Fail and are hysterically Desperate for them to fail !! The idea of the UGA Dawgs doing a 3Peat is absolutely Sickening and Horrifying to Them !!!

Due to being disabled I’m not able to go to games. But I Appeal to those of you who can to go and Cheer our Dawgs on until you almost lose your voice !! Thank You in advance for that !! I’m hoping that Traveling Dawgs fans will make the best showing they can at Auburn. That would be a Beautiful sight to see for this old Dawgs fan !! Think the Notre Dame game a few years back when there were more Dawgs fans at Their stadium than Irish fans !!! Go Dawgs !!!

111th is inexcusable. The primary reason I see is our line is our weakness

The 2nd half against SC is the best we have looked. SC is also the best team we've played so far. Auburn is going to be a dog fight, no matter how good or bad either team is, it will be an absolute dog fight. I expect we will see a little more of the 2nd half team that played the Gamecocks!

I think part of the reason for the low sack numbers is Kirby's been putting more on his secondary on purpose by limiting the blitz packages. That gives his secondary more work against teams that Kirby knows can't or likely can't pose a legitimate challenge. If they do start putting together good drives and scoring, Kirby just dials up the pressure and puts the brakes on their offense. Sandbagging in favor of development...

Sacks are like 100 yard games for running backs. They look great on paper to us arm chair coaches, but they don't always win games. Kirby has recruited unselfish players on both sides of the ball. See article recent on MRJS. Wins not stats. Our sack leader last year had just 4.5, but look who's holding the championship trophy. I think both the offensive and defensive play calling has been pretty vanilla so far this year. Why show better teams any exotic blitz packages when they have not been needed. Besides KS seems more interested in preventing explosive plays than sacks. QB containment with just 4 rushers allows better downfield coverage. I thought when Nolan Smith got here he would be the next Jarvis Jones and fill up the sack stat sheet, but he trusted the defensive coaches and stayed with his assignments. What happened, low sack numbers, but 1st round draft pick. I agree with prior posts, wins are the very best stat.

Good analysis @MikeGriffith. I don't think I've ever seen a Bulldog year, quite like this one.

UGA could've obviously turned it up a few notches...if that was "the plan"...to "show everybody" what they're capable of from day one. But, that's never been Smart's M.O.. In fact, he has dialed back UGA's explosiveness on both sides of the ball against "lesser opponents", in an effort to teach, test and enlighten his players...not the "Fans & Media". Lol

That's "The Winning Formula" in Kirby Smart's Athens, Ga.. Build next years team, today...against the likes of ULM thru UAB...and, turn on 1 or 2 extra burners during the second half of the season. Leaving that last 10" burner on low, for the SECCG and CFP.

They wouldn't have been able to play it that way...if...the Sooners had remained on their '23 schedule. And, they won't be able to do it next year. This year's light front-end schedule gave Kirby the opportunity, that every HC in the Country would've traded their first born, to get.

The '23 Season gave Kirby, 4 games to work on next year's team, ensuring they will probably return to the CFP in '23 & '24. "A stitch in time....".

Let em talk...it's hard to argue with 3 Natty's in a row...goin' on 4. What will be the narrative, next year?...Bama & Saban, again? Or, will it be one of the other "Usual Suspects", like OSU, USC or Michigan? Surely, the bloom will be off the Colorado Rose, by then.

Sooner or later...people are gonna figure out, that the Statistics that have been embraced and "fawned over" by "Fans & Media"...for the last hundred years...are irrelevant to Kirby Smart, his players and coaches. Using statistical data in an attempt to dissect the UGA Bulldogs...individual or unit...is an exercise in futility.

We get to see, what Kirby allows us to see, when HE chooses. Everything being done today...is an investment in tomorrow. But, don't let that get in the way of the "Statistics Watchers". The Dawgs will be right around the top of the Havoc categories, by the end of the season.

I predict that UGA's Defense, will lead the league in interceptions, before it's all said and done. And, will be among the leaders in TFL's, Fumbles, Points Allowed, Points Scored, Rushing Yds allowed...and, yes...Sacks.

It's not that you can't win without sacks on defense, we've done that for 2 years straight to the NC. But it's definitely the goal! It's like someone said about having RB's with 100 yards rushing for the day. You don't have to have them to win, but it's definitely a goal, maybe not so much individually but as a team you would love to have 200 yards rushing.

THe bottom line is when you have a great "team" then the individual stuff isn't something to necessarily be concerned about. WE won by 24 today but we didn't sack the QB, oh well, so what? THe better question is did we affect the passer? DId he sit back there and have all day to throw and get comfortable or was he like a looter in a Walgreen's blitz? Just trying to get out before the cops show up?

I'm still a big believer that you have to get your hands on the quarterback. Some are tougher than others, but from a psychological standpoint, it puts that doubt or fear in their minds. Having an opposing "uncomfortable" quarterback is an advantage for the defense and it some cases the QB will progress (i.e., not stepping into the throws, escaping pocket early, not looking downfield, etc.) and the odds of turnovers increase.

I'm not an expert and I don't have the statistics to back this up; this is my belief. However, I did stay at the Holiday Inn Express last night.

My defensive philosophy is pretty simple: GATA! Spenser Rattler dominated us when he had time. Of course, that was the entire first half in which he was something like 16 for 18 passing. When we started sending an extra man, or two, in the second half he was 4 for 22 (I think) and threw 2 interceptions. It’s not that complicated, any college QB will be very good passing if not pressured. Some can be very good even when pressured, but that guy ain’t on the roster at Auburn. Bottom line: GATA!

  • JBMDawg46JBMDawg46 Posts: 456 ✭✭✭✭ Senior

Ask Rattler if he felt “rushed” in the second half against UGA. That is a better source of info than cfbstats.com. Might also ask the UAB QB that saw question.
