ATHENS — Carson Beck hasn’t put forth the biggest statistical season to this point. He’s thrown just 7 touchdown passes on the season. By comparison, USC quarterback Caleb Williams threw 6 alone last week against Colorado.

I'm expecting the playbook to open up this week as needed.

Halfway through the season, we need to know what we've got in a game against a good team.

I like our chances just fine.

I saw a chart of Becks 3rd down conversion passes vs AU. It was pretty impressive. A long list. A lot of 3rd and longs that were converted into 1st downs. If Beck has a weakness it is in his pocket escape-ability. Though a pretty good athlete, he is not a small, quick twitch guy like SBIV. And a bigger target than SBIV. What will he be able to do when the pocket is collapsing around him? Actually my bigger worry w/Beck is a free blitzer closing in on him. He is not a particularly elusive QB.

I saw a couple of opportunities during the Auburn game where the handoff could have been faked and he would have had 15-20 yards of green pasture. I’m hoping the staff will put that play in sometime when a spark is needed.

@CharlestonDawgFan Remember ('19?) when UGA, w/Fromm, ran the RPO? Fromm almost never kept it. Fromm had no experienced back up. UGA could not afford to get Fromm injured running the ball. Same with Beck '23. Can't run him because there is no one ready to take over a possible championship team if he were to get hurt. You may see an occasional RPO keeper for 15. But is may be a desperation, surprise or spark play when the other choices are limited.

One reason we're vulnerable if Beck gets injured is that our defense isn't guaranteed to shut people down. If we did, the D could give us a buffer for Vandergriff to get his sea legs.

I do think Vandergriff has great upside -- mayber higher eventually than Beck.

I understand not getting Beck hurt but, Auburn knew Beck was not going to pull it and run and that made it tougher on our running game. He don’t have to keep it often but he needs to keep their defense honest.

I’ll probably be **** to death by Some on here. But just wanted to add that Mike Bobo ( a former QB himself) is giving Beck a first year as starter, plays that fit into Beck’s comfort zone. Bobo is helping to Grow Beck.

Those long throws Will come. Probably this Sat. vs Kentucky what with Beck now having McConkey back to help stretch the field along with Of Course, Bowers, Rosemy-Jacksaint, possibly Arian Smith, possibly Lovett and RaRa. Just my humble opinion but I think on deep balls Bowers, McConkey, and Rosemy-Jacksaint will be the first Go To guys.

If he can get really open he might give Arian Smith another try, if not then it might be Lovett or RaRa as that Fourth Go To guy.

I’m No expert or coach, but vs KY I think we Need to at least Attempt some deep shots to keep them from loading the box. Now conversely if KY try’s to do the same this Might and I say Might be an opportunity to pick off a pass from KY. We’ll get a better idea of just how good or not our Secondary is IF Kentucky try’s the deep shot.

But I think their mainly just gonna run the ball right at us with Davis. I’m sure Hoping that our Defensive Front will have the best game they’ve played thus far this season !!

I’m hoping the Dawgs fans will have our players amped up to a high level. You Know they sure don’t want to lose to Kentucky in front of the home crowd in a rare night game !! Go Dawgs !!!

I like BVG a lot. Probably does have as much if not more upside as Beck (physically. cerebrally?) because of his added mobility. He is a better athlete. But it has been pretty clear from the spring game on that Beck is the more experienced, poised and prepared QB right now. Beck seems to know the O inside and out. Makes the right decisions. So far he looks very good. Gives UGA the best chance to win right now. But Beck is still not proven. We will learn a lot on saturday. CKS likes to go with all his eggs in 1 basket. Should UGA need QB2 he may not be ready to play at the level necessary to win the SECe, SECCG or CFBCG.

In a way this team reminds me of the '19 team. The year (2?) before the D really started to dominate. A good team. Nobody knows how good this team will be. Not even CKS. He has said so. REALLY need A LOT of guys to elevate their games on the defense. Essentially everybody on the D needs to elevate their games except 22, 23 and 24. The OL needs to elevate their game. The RB's need to get healthy. The team needs to stay healthy.

A lot of season left to get better and to have players subtracted through attrition. For all teams. Odds are against a 3 peat but this is why they play the games.

@navydawg "But just wanted to add that Mike Bobo ( a former QB himself) is giving Beck a first year as starter, plays that fit into Beck’s comfort zone. Bobo is helping to Grow Beck." Correct. That is CKS's MO. Especially at QB. QB errors lose games. Beck still has the training wheels on. CKS will give him a little more each week as long as he minimizes mistakes. But only as it fits into CKS's low risk game planning. When you usually have the better team and can only usually lose by losing the TO battle it is smart (NPI) to not play w/too much risk.

I totally agree that Beck should be our guy right now; I also agree that BVG isn't quite ready. But I do think we have a better backup situation now than in 2019. Basically, I'm saying that BVG is further along now than our 2019 backup (some guy named Stetson something-or-other) was then.

You bring up an interesting point about SBIV, BVG and CBeck. Most of you think I don't like SBIV. I always liked SBIV. Especially his mobility. I think you MUST have mobility at the QB position to win at any level. The more the better. As a student of NFL football I shouldn't have to remind readers of the NFL records mobile UGA grad Fran Tarkenton retired with. Or the Super Bowls won on the arms and legs of Roger Staubach and Steve Young. Joe Montana was pretty mobile too. CBeck's game has a little Montana in it. Smart QB w/some mobility. Is he clutch? IDK. We'll find out. The list of successful mobile QB's goes on and on. I know I know Tom Brady. Brady got so good at knowing the O, where everyone was and where to go with the ball at any time after the ball was snapped that he could get rid of the ball often before mobility became an issue. JTD also seemed to have some of the capability. CBeck also seems to be on that track.

As for SBIV I thought he had too much Tony Romo. Sometimes tried to do too much. Forced some things he didn't have to. Had some streaky characteristics. Some accuracy challenges. Some progression challenges. But SBIV got better each year. CKS reined him in and somehow put the fear of God in him about recklessness. He matured and improved. My biggest concern about SBIV was that he couldn't beat the 1 team that stood in UGA's way. Did he give UGA the best chance to beat Alabama. I wasn't sure but I didn't think so. And for 2 3/4 games out of 3 games I was right. Somehow (AD's TD, Ringo's TD) SBIV with a great team behind him killed the underachieving UGA rep and lifted the curse. Made some clutch throws. Storybook throws. Only fitting.

Don't forget that by '19, SBIV had already started 15 games (and got all the 1st team reps) for his junior college team. VBG doesn't have anywhere near that level of experience. CBeck doesn't either. It is telling and surprising that CBeck already has as much, if not more, knowledge of the offense's checks and progressions as SBIV did last year. After 5 starts! CBeck also seems to have more accuracy and is better able to see/throw to any area of the field than SBIV could. So far he just looks like he has more experience than he has. And more than BVG. But he hasn't been through the fire yet. The proof will be when the game is sped up for CBeck by better D's. But right now CBeck gives UGA the best chance to win. I hope BVG sticks around long enough for all to see him reach his potential in a UGA uniform.

One of SB's good qualities was he was fearless when he got on a roll. Against Ohio St down the stretch he threw some passes into tiny windows with some heat on it. When he let it go I was like Oh no! Where is he throwing it? and bam! right into the arms of Kearis Jackson or Blaylock,or AD Mitchell. anyone heard anything on his whereabouts?

Tony "Oh No!" Romo. That was his nickname. Fearless QB's throw a lot of INT's. That pass SBIV threaded into BB's in the 2nd half of the OSU game was his best as a UGA QB. I can't say I didn't hold my breath every time SBIV dropped back to pass in a big situation. H3LL I held my breath EVERY TIME SBIV dropped back to pass. Every time. PTSD from the AL and FU losses especially the butterfingers "fumble" inside the red zone in the 3rd Q of the '21 CFBCG.
