ATHENS —Georgia sits as the favorites to win the national championship halfway through the season, and Brock Bowers is eighth among Heisman Trophy contenders, per the Caesars Sportsbook.

Do they honestly believe that there are 7 quarterbacks, much less players in general, that are actually better than Bowers? I hate the award because it stopped being for the best player many years ago and I would wager that, in a pick-up game, when captains were choosing sides, Bowers would be no later than the second person chosen.
A great receiver/TE can make a cr@ppy quarterback look good.

First off, if defensive players and offensive linemen are included in the equation then yes I can imagine there being 7 guys in college football better than Bowers.
For this reason - linemen and defensive players have no chance - the Heisman has never been about the best player. It is actually called the award for the most outstanding player. What is the criteria for most outstanding? It used to vary from year to year. It became arguably synonymous with the best player during the era when it went mostly to RBs, because back then teams actually would put their 3 best athletes at tailback. So you had craziness like future NFL Hall of Famer Barry Sanders backing up future NFL Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas at Oklahoma State in the 1980s. In today's game, Barry Sanders is playing cornerback and Thurman Thomas is playing wide receiver because CBs and WRs are more valuable than tailbacks in today's game. All those LBs and edges that UGA has sent in the first round of the draft the past couple of years? Well in the 1970s and 1980s those guys would have been I-formation tailbacks and fullbacks at Georgia, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee. And a lot of the 1st round picks at WR and DB would have been slotbacks and wingbacks too. (Yes, I miss the I-formation. It is much better than these spread offenses where mediocre QBs get to throw the ball 50 times a game. Back then you only threw the ball that much if you had a 1st or 2nd round pick at QB.)
But in this era, "most outstanding player" generally means "the QB who contributed the most to his team making the playoff." Of course, when we go from a 4 team playoff to a 12 team playoff, making getting your team to the playoff a much less significant accomplishment, the criteria for "most outstanding" is probably going to reset again.
Absolutely correct that Heisman has strayed from its own criteria. From the Heisman Mission Statement: "awarded to the outstanding college football player ... whose performance epitomizes great ability combined with diligence, perseverance and hard work."
Reads like it was written for Bowers! Six of the seven QBs ahead of him in the odds deserve to be in the running (Drake Maye doesn't belong there this year). In my own opinion, however, regardless of the odds, the top contenders at this stage ought to be Caleb Williams, Penix and Brock -- maybe Jayden Daniels.
Bowers and Beck would be higher rated if they played beyond the third quarter. But it's good that UGA can rest them and develop their replacements. I'm looking forward to a 4 & 5 peat.
You are 100% correct. That so-called "Award"...goes to whichever player, ESPN gets behind. And, if you want to know which team is gonna get the award...go to their web page at any given time. They have "stock photos" of every team and player...except UGA.
I think there is a Cold War going on between UGA and the "media"...particularly ESPN. And, the Dawgs are kickin' their asses, too. Lol. They can't shut em out of the hype, as long as they continue winning...and, it's giving all of em "hair-lips".
Watching the Dawgs, this season, with respect to the other top 20 teams...has been like watching a Race that you already know who the winner is.
Lol...the Dawgs are sporting 3 "Nitro Injection Kits". They will hit one of em after the Florida game. The second one after the season, in the SECCG and the CFP Semi-Final....then, they'll hit the last Nitro Injection before the Natty.
What we saw last week is their normal cruising speed. They could've blown everybody they played, before that...off the field...if they "wanted to". But, to what end? What would they have gained?
Instead...the coaching staff used the first half of the season to built most of next year's team and enhanced this year's team's "experience level", discipline and health, while looking fairly pedestrian. It's a strategy that Kirby used, to a lesser extent, over the last few years.
Play calling is the instrument of control, with respect to offensive and defensive output. That's how he does it. You can't call complex plays when you have inexperience on the field. And, the Dawgs obviously had a LOT of youngsters playing in those first 5 games. It's all about basics and discipline.
In '21 & '22...Clemson and Oregon didn't allow him to do what he did this year. He did it, to ensure the future of the UGA Bulldogs, will be in competent hands for the foreseeable furlture. You can call it..."Playing it Forward". Lol
That's over....maybe. They still have a feckless Vandy and Florida team along with a Bye Week, before they face their 2nd "challenge" [if you want to call it that].
At the end of the year...I predict Beck, Bowers and pick-em to be in the final 3 for the Heisman. UGA and Kirby Smart Wil NOT be denied their due respect, this year. Kirby's about to shove their "hype" down their ignorant throats. Lol

Bennett worked about as hard as any athlete I've seen...AND...persevered through his diligence and commitment to "the game". "Great Ability" is a relative term, that apparently shifts and morphs every year.
It used to go to the best guy...on the best team. Now...ESPN decides who "that team" and "that player" is...unless you do what UGA has been doing to "turn the worm". WIN...WIN...WIN!
Kirby is showing the Fans, just how "Fake" everything has been, since 24/7 Sports networks took over the sport. History won't be kind. IMO
What I'd like to know, is...how the hell is Jalen Milroe ranked above Carson Beck? Milroe was "benched" for 1 game. ****?

That is the question that needs to be answered……not just that he is ranked above Beck, but that he is ranked at all!
Kind of like Miami being in the championship talk after a horrendous loss to GT……Just Why!?
All I know is Bowers is having a great year for a TE and will eclipse 1000 yards and probably break the Georgia all time TD record.
Beck on current trajectory (not sure if it continues but hopefull) leads the SEC in passing yards, leads the country in first down passes (87) and is dynamic in his medium level throws.
Both of these guys should be in the top 10 in the Heisman imo.
I hate to say it...but, I'm starting to think it's Racism. They [ESPN, etal.] only see certain skin tones. It's starting to piss me off...cause I can "see"...and, I'm not a "moron". Lol
