As you said, Coaches (and their attorneys) greed started this years ago.

I like the cap idea. This isn't supposed to replace NFL salaries.

So... the title is "Georgia football free agency trumping historic success, fans and donors left behind times" and how exactly are our "fans and donors left behind times"? I was assuming there were details about how maybe a Texas program had more booster support or whatever, but this just seems to be clickbait to get opinions on NIL.

NIL gets money into kids hands. Does that make it a "free agency" or whatever? I would need to see proof of that. I guess if Colorado with the Deion Sanders of the world starts having the #1 recruiting class and/or if Texas schools lead the way every year then yes that is bad, but otherwise it's more money to the college students and helps keep them incentivized to stay longer. I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing 3 or 4 year "no transfer" and/or "no NFL" clauses added when they sign as a Freshman.

The Transfer Portal is an opportunity to move. What was BS was the whole Justin Fields racism situation and other players that weren't allowed to transfer and the whole hiring of an expensive lawyer thing. Yes, it sucks when you sign a #1 class every year as you have more to lose, but it allows things to balance out. Yes, we might lose a great QB but then again we might pickup talented Receivers.

I mean, how would you feel if you joined a sports team and got buried down as a 4th string when other teams would love to have you?

I'm sure there will be more rules later on to smooth things out, but it's a far cry from NFL where a player might be traded simply because they want too much money. I've seen no evidence of it at this point and someone like Manning considering moving would be proof that the "Texas Money" isn't everything.

Now there's a thought. What if we could convince Arch Manning to transfer to UGA. Now THAT would make that Oct. 2024 game in Austin true must-watch television. Go Dawgs!

College baseball and basketball have been nothing but semi pro farm systems for decades now and look how those sports are these days... College baseball has no money and almost no TV presence...College basketball is a shell of what it was over 30 years ago. Nobody gives a crap about their teams as there is almost 100% turn over year after year with these schools rosters...March Madness...sure it's fun the first weekend but after that...does anyone give one **** about who wins?... Nope!

Now College Football... the last vestige of storied traditions and the flag ship collegiate sport of colleges across the plains, valleys and mountains far and wide has succumbed to the evil rot of greed, self indulgence and the grass is always greener over hill. We live in a world of instant gratification, vile and deplorable self indulgence and utter me is better than all of the world and if you don't like it well then I'm moving somewhere else where I demand better...

You can thank the old white men in their ivory towers for allowing this **** show to happen... The shallow and brain dead NCAA white collar idiots, The arrogant college Presidents, the **** and shallow Athletics Directors, head coaches running for the best pay check availably and slick willy agents that have inflated pricing of everything to enrich themselves into mafia like God's from sea to sea.

Where are the leaders that can thread a needle to put some type of sanity back into college athletics? Where is Greg Sankey, Where is Dr. Moorhead... Where is Kirby or Saban? is anybody willing to stand up and say enough of this insanity?

Sadly...the ship has no stern and no captain ... When the warden is away... the inmates will play and now you know the rest of the story!

    Perge!

Put them all under contract. If they leave, they or their new school have to pay a buyout, just like coaches. And depending on when they leave, maybe pay back any NIL and other benefits received. That's what they scream coaches can leave, but players cannot. Well you get the bad thats comes with it. Buyout clauses.

Players are not coaches either, they are receiving training, benefits, food, shelter, college education, facilities, exposure etc to FURTHER their careers. Significant benefits they cannot get ANYWHERE but within the top level of college football and then some of the best programs are more beneficial in many ways. Scholarships are technically renewed on a yearly basis so that is sticky but NIL is separate. Maybe scholarship contracts need to be changed in some ways for some players. its all crazy. Might as well lock them in like NFL players since they want to be free to move like coaches and again if so, buyouts in some cases seem appropriate, just like coaches, as they LOVE to say.

A lot going on here but if they want to get "paid" then put them and their new school on the hook for everything they received and benefited from but said whatever, I am gone.

This does not apply to most players, just the starters or going to be QB's really.

But if its not about being paid and just playing time, then they weren't likely getting paid much anyway.

I totally agree with you and several states have now opted to allow NIL money into high school sports. I'm rapidly approaching the point of not watching any sports. I and many others played for the love of the game, what ever that game may be.

The whole system is broken. Yes, I’m old school and played sports because I loved the bonding with teammates, the thrill of competing, impressing the pretty girls, and the fun of playing sports I loved to play. Heck, we played every sport by season in the backyard growing up because it was fun.

The men who coached me ranged from volunteers with no pay to teachers who coached for an extra $500 a school year. Nobody transferred . Why? We actually loved our school and our teammates. The chance to go to college for free AND PLAY SPORTS was an honor and a privilege, not to mention it enabled many of us to go to college which would have not been possible because we couldn’t afford to go if we had to pay for tuition, room, board, and books

I choose a career as a lawyer after coaching at the public school level. Would I have made a different career choice if I had known coaches would make millions of dollars a year? Maybe, but really not sure. Today, the whole system is about two things: me and money. That’s true for both coaches and players. Many professors are still underpaid. Education ain’t what it’s about nowadays, but it used to be. Is this progress? Sadly, to many folks it is thought to be.

College football is headed down the same path that baseball and basketball have already traveled. Will college football suffer the same lack of interest? Who knows? I know I’m losing my enthusiasm when I see the selfishness of the many, not all, of the modern players.

The saddest thing? Almost everyone saying it’s ok for college athletes to get paid. Yes, I understand the current generation can’t even begin to believe that free tuition, room, board, and books was actually one heck of a benefit. In fact, for many kids from poor families, those were life changing benefits enabling lower income families to see a son actually graduate from college, go to med school, law school, graduate programs, and live a good productive life trying to make the world a better place for their kids, grandkids, and on down the line.

Yes, I’m out of touch with reality. No need to remind me.

I look at it this way: for most fans, college football is nothing more than entertainment. Most fans love the game because of the competition, rivalry, history, or being an alumni. No matter what happens with NIL, how disruptive it becomes, or the TP, the game goes on. College athletes should be compensated for their skills. And as the career span of pro football players continues to decrease because of multiple factors, college players are smart in trying to make some bank before hitting the pros. Academics should factor into the equation, but that appears to be a mute point for some players.

The game has changed, but from a fan's perspective, I'm very much looking forward to next season and so many more great matchups than folks have ever witnessed.

I think players should be able to choose the team they wish to play for without money being the determining factor. They should find a way to pay them based on their HS rankings perhaps and this player gets this much NIL no matter the program he chooses and so on down the line. THe 5 stars getting the most and then the 4 stars and 3 stars. Standard amounts should be set so that a bidding war never happens. Maybe anything below the top 1,000 HS players in the nation, you don't get any NIL but you get a chance to earn some NIL based on snaps in college. The more snaps, the more you earn based on a scale.

THe portal should be limited in some way to players with some type of regulations for Freshmen and Sophmores not being able to transfer so easliy. Just thinking out loud.

THis clown show has to stop!
