Was the 2023 season a succesful one for the Georgia football program?
Georgia won’t hoist a third straight national championship trophy on Monday night. Michigan and Washington will meet in Houston with 14-0 records while Georgia sits at home.

13-1 with more injuries then I can remember in one season ever plus replacing a qb and oc.
I would say it is an unquestioned success. It's not like we lost by 60 points or something, we lost by 3. 3.
4 top 25 victories with 2 wins over teams that finished in the top 10. Not too shabby.
We should have a strong team next year and hopefully better luck in the injury department.
The season was absolutely a successful one. The disappointment in the outcome shows how far the program has come under CKS. It also exposes major flaws in the CFP system and the obvious control that ESPN and TV ratings has over the selection of the playoff teams. As Kirby said this will not go away with the expansion to 12 teams. This team was good enough to win it all again and I think it is a credit to the culture that you do not hear a lot of "what if's" like we did from Alabama in '21 and Ohio State in '22 coming from the programs or the fan base. As Kirby also said this program is built to be sustainable so that we can look forward to the possibility of a championship run every year. Just another reason it is great to be a Georgia Bulldog!!! Go Dawgs!
Actually, the Dawgs are really only one blown call by the refs (that went unchallenged) in the SEC CG, from making into the National Championship. Sometimes the calls go against you. The team won all their regular season games, made it to the conference championship and then won their bowl game in convincing fashion. How can that be anything but a successful season? Go Dawgs!
Jim is 1000% correct and I don't want to hear that the ref's make bad calls on both sides. When it comes to Bama, they lost two games this year and both had ZERO SEC ref's.-- Interesting
The fact is that while Michigan and Washington are playing for the National Championship, the best team will be sitting in Athens, Georgia, watching. In an unprecedented move, the CFP dropped the #1 team out of the playoffs due to a 3-point loss when several key players were injured. It is my belief that this was a calculated move by the CFP to set up an Alabama/Texas rematch that the TV bosses felt would be better financially. The CFP and TV bosses got what they deserved when Mr. Murphy intervened, and Texas and Alabama got sent home by arguably inferior opponents. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the Michigan-Alabama game was officiated by a crew not from the SEC and not subject to Saban's influence or intimidation. Still, we can be proud of our DAWGS, as they handled the whole snub like professionals (while stewing about things in private, I'm sure). No one "opted out," and after the obligatory transfer portal moves, the remaining veterans went to work, unlike their FSU counterparts, who allowed being butthurt to throw the remaining members of their team under the bus. The real telltale issue will be the final rankings across the spectrum of polls (AP, coaches, and CFP). Will our DAWGS be #3 behind the top 2, or will Alabama and Texas be ahead of the DAWGS with worse records? If the latter occurs, you'll know this thing is rigged, just like professional wrestling. It will be nothing more than kayfabe by the pollsters...
Proud of our Dawgs despite being a bit disappointed in the final outcome. But 13-1 is an excellent record and shows how high Kirby has brought the program when one loss is a disappointment.
Next season will definitely demand more from the Dawgs, but I think both sides of the ball will be better. We've got a best-in-the-nation roster and a talented coaching staff. Looking forward to Spring practice and see some new Dawgs strut their stuff!
Nah, absolutely FANTASTIC season especially given the amount of "firepower" we lost to the NFL (and how well many of them are playing) and honestly with Bama losing, Ohio State getting their butts kicked and us showing Florida State what a REAL program looks like things are actually pretty good.
Things are looking solid for next year with QB1 all set (and Stockton looking like he's coming along quite nicely) and a difficult but interesting schedule for next year.
Go Dawgs!
God yes!
I have little tolerance for "UGA fan" who insist that we must win it all or the season is considered unsuccessful. There are 133 teams in D1 football and to win it all every year is unrealistic. Winning it One year is extremely difficult and takes quite a bit of luck along the way to accomplish.
This year was different that past years in that there were 6 teams that could make the case for 4 slots in the playoff UGA did not get the break they needed.
BE IN THE HUNT!
This is how I measure success in college football. And UGA has been in the hunt for the last 6-7 years. 3 points short this year.
12 team playoff will help to some degree but will also bring about other problems.
It was more "successful" than the spelling in the article title.
Fantastic season and with our additions I really see our defense coming up smelling like roses next year. Offense will have weapons galore and this team will play with a chip on its shoulder for being left out last year. Good things coming dawg fans!
Georgia has definitely not pulled even with Alabama. Simple as looking at our won/loss record against them over the past few years. Not hopeful we can pass Bama as long as Saban is the head football coach there. He has Kirby Smart's number and seems to be in his head.
The weak link in the 2023 UGA football program is the defense. The defense has slipped now for two years in a row. Alabama pushed Georgia around with ease. Stackhouse looked like he'd been moved by a D7 Dozer a number of times against Bama. The defense could not get the ball back from Bama in hte SECCG in the closing minutes to give the offense a chance to tie or win the game.
So next year needs to get the defense back to a dominating line and agile LBs who can shut down the edges...
Can't wait for next season! GO DAWGS!!
2023 was a successful season on so many levels. Undefeated regular season with wins against rivals Auburn, Florida, Tennessee and a good Missouri team, while dealing with more injuries than I can recall. Losing only 1 game by 3 points against a top 10 team with 2 of our best players limping around the field. Maintaining a culture that makes players like Carson, Tate and Smael want to come back, when each had decent draft prospects. Landing the number 1 recruiting class, including the number 1 corner back, number 1 line backer and number 1 safety in the country. It's amazing to me to note how strong a program Kirby has built that makes a 13 and 1 season even up for discussion on whether it was a successful season.
3 of 4 in 24. Go Dawgs
To those who are advocating that the refs lost the SECCG for the Dawgs, I beg to differ. The game wasn't anywhere near as close as the score hints. Both our lines were pushed around with ease the entire game. We committed multiple unforced turnovers. Bama ran at will against our defense. We never got a leash on Milroe.
We lost the game all by ourselves and did not deserve to be in the CFP. Period dot com.
The biggest problem with the SECCG for UGA other than the general defensive line play was the OC's conservative play calling in the first half following the first TD possession. Bobo reverted to his tired and old predictable "run it up the middle again and again" with no gain each time. It absolutely snuffed out the momentum of the game. Once we fell behind, after halftime he opened up the game again and we started scoring. Amazing. Perhaps we could sign a contract with Todd Monken so that he gives Bobo some refresher training once a month to avoid future relapses.
All said, we had a fantastic season, undefeated during the regular season in the toghest conference in NCAA. Not perfect, but absolutely fantastic!
GO DAWGS!
Would have loved a 3peat but it did not happen, too many injuries. Think it was a very successful year anyway. Team played hard but usually a had a quarter or two that was below par. That is true for most teams. One can never disparage a record that UGA put up this year.
“There’s a culture at our place of work ethic and the job is not done,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said......GOD Bless Texas and The 2019 Sugar Bowl.....the day after was the birth of the strongest, most resilient culture in college football....then on January 15, tragedy struck with a blow that would have destroyed any lesser culture....but the memory of Devin and Chandler was the strength needed to over come the lose of 15 players leaving for the NFL, 7 player leaving for the portal, the lose of coaches, the introduction of a new OC and the first start for a new field general......If not for the culture established by Kirby Smart after that Sugar Bowl Debacle, The Georgia Bull Dawgs would have faded away, just another footnote, in college football history. Successful.....Ya D--- Skippy we were Dawgs Fans.....I'd say the most successful in that we notched 13 wins and only one lose by only three points.....is there any other team in the history of college football that can match or exceed that mark given what WE have overcome? 2024 promises to be an even better team....."Because Better Never Rest".....GOD Bless KS and The Culture that won't be beat!
If given only two choices to characterize the entire season, "success" or "not success", unless you're Ricky Bobby, you'd have to call it a success!
Proud of this team.
