Everyone knows he's a first round pick. Except maybe the Falcons...

Surely NFL folks are not so dumb that they would pass on any player as good as Mims. If they are they are probably picking early for a reason. The smart teams will not pass on a player as good as Mims. Of course, since dumb teams have a history of not drafting the best players, the Falcons will definitely not draft him. That’s why they can’t make the playoffs. Same is true for the Panthers.

Amarius Mims being a 1st round pick talent is one thing. Making a guy who started 8 games and then entered the draft as a true junior your opening day starter at RT responsible for protecting the QB from strongside pass rushers and blitzers is another.
Also, while this draft doesn't have very many elite prospects at OT - it is Alabama's JC Latham and everybody else - it is very deep. So if you wanted to use your 1st round draft pick on another position and then swing around and still be able to get a 2-3 year starter from Penn State, Oklahoma, Washington, Texas or Notre Dame - yes it is just that deep - this is the year to do it.
The best situation for Mims is a team who needs a starting OG today and will need a starting OT in 2 years. If there is someone who fits that description in the first round, so be it.

ONe way to look at it is the kid has a way higher ceiling than guys you have tape on for 2-3 years. He's still learning, so you run his tape and if you see him dominate other NFL type players even with his lack of playing time then you have to figure he's only going to get better.
You are right. As I said Mims is probably the most gifted OL prospect ever signed by UGA. It is really a shame we didn't get to see and appreciate him more. He could've been the Brock Bowers of OT's at UGA.
But as you said where he will have difficulty adjusting to the next level, as a 3 yr college player, is with the strength, speed and technique of the opponents he will deal with every week. He has not consistently seen that level of competition at practice nor during games. He hasn't had 1st team reps at practice nor games to hone is craft nor improve his technique as much as more experienced players have.
It will be interesting to watch how soon he is drafted (potential/measurables vs production) and how long it takes him to get to the level of proficiency needed to be productive at the next level. 1st Rd pick Broderick Jones bounced around the OL and took some time before finally settling in at RT for the Steelers.
