Stetson Bennett shares why he thinks Kirby Smart started him over JT Daniels during 2021 season

Interesting take on what happened. We know that Beck lost his chance to shine when he threw that pick in a game and refused to chase after the defender and just kinda laughed it off. Kirby didn't like that either. So, I can see where JT screwed up his relationship with Kirby by tapping out of the game. Beck of course, is back in good graces with the HC and probably learned a lot about what is expected from QB 1 after his mistake.
Do you mean Bennett? Beck was only mentioned as being beat out during practice, not throwing an interception.
The Beck interception was in a different game than the Bennett pick mentioned in the article.
Beck was a Freshman and barely understood what he was supposed to be doing....it was Bennett's 2nd year [3rd Overall], since transferring back to Athens.
IMO...the #1/#2 QB job, was Bennett's to lose, after Daniels bombed in the Clemson game. I don't think the Fall, QB Competition was over, till that Vandy game.
IMO...Beck was never really the #2 quarterback in '20. It was always gonna be between Bennett and Daniels, coming out of Fall Camp. According to an interview Smart did, in '21...there was not a consensus on whom the QB should be. Some coaches wanted Bennett, with his mobility and adlib-ability....others wanted Daniels.
One thing, I believe, was the deciding factor....was Receiver depth and availability, at the time. Bennett at QB.…gave Monken more options and flexibility. Simple as that. Ratledge getting hurt early, along with Erikson's injury, didn't help Daniels' case much, either. Mobility, pocket presence and passing under "pressure", were not JT's friends. Lol
If you would like to listen to a full length interview with SB, he does a deep dive with the Film Guy on his podcast. SB maybe the most unassuming 2 time NC Qb you've will ever listen to. Great great interview over 30 minutes. If you want the real low down on how the 2020 season played out you can begin watching at the 19 minute mark. THere are several narratives floating around about how he was viewed by TM and KS heading into the season. JT was designated the starter after the Peach Bowl win, and KS stated in August BEck was number 2. Come fall practice SB isn't even getting official reps. He is basically (according to his own words) just doing dry reps(practicing throwing by himself). JT got hurt and so now they have to make SB part of the practice. THe week following the Clemson game SB said he felt like there was no pressure on him and he had nothing to lose since he really didn't think he was even going to be playing in 2020, so he just went out there and aired it out and the coaches thought he should start and whathe was told was he would do the1st 2 drives and then CB would come in and get 2 drives, but SB was performing so well, they(coaches) changed their minds and after 6 drives they had 35 points.

And...I believe that's exactly where Kirby wanted Bennett's head, going into the season...loose & unassuming [i.e., "Just play the game and have fun doing it."].
In an August interview...Kirby was asked, why "Bennett wasn't getting any reps or attention". Kirby said, that they already knew what they had, with Bennett. Afterall....he had been in Athens off & on, since 2017...and, was #2 behind Fromm, in 2019...not to mention, designated "starter" till his throwing arm injury, in the Florida game, in 2020.
They HAD to get Beck ready to assume the duties..."in case". With Daniels coming a year away from a major knee injury and Bennett being a "wild card"...it's only prudent to get your #3 ready to go. That's, Kirby looking ahead...and playing, "What If".
KS didn't name Beck #2, till after the Clemson game, in September....despite being asked a thousand times, "What is the QB depth chart". Kirby was being coy...IMO.
Maybe, he told the QB room...just, what they needed to hear. That's what I think. There's no way in hell, those coaches looked at Bennett and Beck...and, thought Beck was more "ready" than Bennett. Unless, you're planning for the future and measuring ceilings.
That's not Kirby...IMO. I believe he's a member of the "George Allen Society"...[The Future is Now!___George Allen]. Lol
