My father took me to my first Georgia game when I was five. The DAWGS played South Carolina in 1968 and were getting beat 16-0. I cried like a baby, but they came back to win 41-16! I’ve been hooked ever since! Sometimes it’s a curse!!!!
grew up in Snellville. Born in 77. There was no question.
South Gwinnett or Shiloh?
I’m a General
You sell insurance?
dad was a dawg, mom was a nole, uncles played for nd and UF.
one word Herschel walker.
Got into watching American football, NFL highlights, in the early 80's (born and raised in England). For the last 5 years before transferring to Atlanta in 1988 I would take the Monday after the Super Bowl off work to watch live coverage of the game (England 5 hours ahead so didn't end until 4am or so). The year after relocating a guy I worked with who was a UGA Grad invited me, the wife and 2 kids to a game. For the next few seasons we would go to the first and last home game of the season. When my wife and daughter tired of going my son and I got season tickets 😊. This continued for 5/6 years when we lived in Cobb County and an additional 4 years while living in Greensboro NC until my son graduated from UNC Chapel Hill and he moved DC.
Still a huge Dawg fan but attend very few games in person.
Dating myself here….both parents were UGA grads, but mom was from a big Tech family and remained loyal to them throughout her life. Her family had season tickets, so I watched that car drive out on Grant Field a lot as a kid. Dad and I went and enjoyed the trip to the Varsity, but we secretly rooted for the NATS' opponents, our little pact. The Dawgs were seldom on TV in those days, so I grew up listening to the radio with dad (began pre-Munson). He got a kick out of me being such a fan as a little guy.
One of my first memories as a Dawg fan was getting a long but kind lecture on not taking football too seriously. It was '65, when Bob Taylor ran the hook and ladder (flea flicker in the media) for the end of the game, ~75 yd TD (+2 pointer) to beat the National champs (Bama), in Athens in the opener. Those Dawgs were undefeated and I believe my favorite player—Taylor, was the leading rusher in the SEC. Hopes were high. We played FSU almost half way through that season and they delivered our first of several losses and broke Taylor's leg in the process (held a Nole grudge ever since)! After losing the game and Taylor, I cried so hard dad had to have that counseling session with me. I could tell he was amused by it, though. I also remember going downtown on Thanksgiving and riding the Pink Pig at Rich's, and then going to the Scottish Rite UGA-GT freshman battle—quite a tradition!
My favorite Dawg growing up was Jake Scott and I went for #13 on all my jerseys when I played baseball and football. Although we were far from great during my years in Athens, a few years later Herschel put the CFB Cosmos back in order. Kirby carrying on the tradition very well. Go Dawgs and whip the lizards today!
Outstanding!
The varsity, Rich’s, the Pink Pig, Taylor, the “hook and ladder”, the Scottish Rite freshman game……all wonderful memories, all in one post!!
I was also raised a Jacket fan, but the flea flicker play is on my Dawg wall! And we did all those Thanksgiving day things every year ( the lighting of the great tree as well!) albeit as a Tech fan! Great times!
Just wonderful!
Go Dawgs!
1969 my sister was going to Gordon High School in Atlanta area(we lived in Decatur off of Flat Shoals Rd) and went to Band Camp at UGA and came back a Dawg. A year later we moved to the Jacksonville area and she pushed us hard to become Bulldog fans. I was only in 2nd grade but knew the Gators were obnoxious. Been a bulldog ever since. My Dad grew up in TN so he was a Vol. My brother and I were born in TN but all Dawg.
Paternal grandfather was youngest of 8. Born in Georgia and a massive Dawg fan. After Marines he came home and moved to Tx for work. Met my grandmother (Indian from Ok) had kids, etc. That led to my father being a big Dawg fan but still being in Tx. Growing up in Tx it was either Shorthorns, Ags or Sooners. My father was always about the Dawgs. That led to me being all about the Dawgs. Somehow with 8 kids and 26 grandchildren it was him, my father and I that rooted for the Dawgs. Rest of family was all about Shorthorns or Sooners.
I was 11 when it became a minor obsession. We came back to Georgia to visit for a big family reunion. We had been back a few other times before BUT this time would be different. That weekend to my surprise they had gotten us tix to see the game… Dawgs and Ags. I was hooked!! It was everything not just one specific thing. I will never forget my grandfather's face after Walkers run in the 3rd. Every Christmas I would ask for Dawgs gear. At the time not realizing the effort put into getting me that stuff since there was no internet or cell phones, etc. In HS I knew where I wanted to play ball the only problem was a thing called talent. I was a good HS player but no D3 type talent much less SEC.
After grad joined Marines. Always told myself when I get out, I was going to UGA. After 22 yrs in Marines with wife and kids I retired needing 20 credits to finish my degree. I was going to just knock out the rest at UT Arlington until my wife suggested I look into my options since she knew how much I loved the Dawgs. Thanks to my wife, incredible staff at the SVRC and online I was able to get my degree from UGA.
My youngest told my wife how fun it was to see the joy in my face and the other Dawg fans around us in Austin after ETN scored in 4th. Never really thought about it all until now typing this up…... Kind of funny how life works sometimes.

I was born in Alabama and grew up an Auburn fan watching Pat Sullivan and Terry Beasley. We moved to Atlanta and my older brother went to Georgia and studied Real Estate. I wanted to study Real Estate too and Auburn was still a cow school so I enrolled in Athens. FIRST game in Athens, the Dawgs beat Alabama and Bear Bryant 21 to 0. Athens went CRAZY. Been hooked since then.
I was originally a Tech fan because my uncle went to Tech. Then Bobby Dodd retired and my uncle did something that irked me. So at the age of 12 I became a Dawg fan 58 years ago.
