Cut it down to 4 conferences. the 2 teams to make the championship game in each conference should make it to the playoffs with 4 at large bids. The winner of the championship game gets a bye. Or if you are in the conference championship game and in the top 12 before the game, you are guaranteed to not fall out of the top 12. Or do away with the conference championship games.
I posted a year ago about this and even further back than that-This 12 team playoff money grab by the Conference Commissioners is going to (already has) ruin the value of the SEC championship game. It also devalues some of the regular season games because there are going to be years, this one included, where our Dawgs play the toughest games on the road and take some L’s, versus some years where we get those games at home and win out-but then you slip up by 2 or 3 points in the championship conference game, you get demoted by the committee for that L even with 3+ wins against top 20 opponents.
It is ridiculous.
The extra games, added injuries, non-expanded rosters, teams with the same records who played heads up but not other same teams, etc etc.

Simple solution….Sankey can charge a percentage from each extra game, the conference gets paid then after the season ends award the SEC Championship to the team with the best record against ranked opponents.
this seems like an SEC issue. As other conferences will use their championship game as a spring board to jump into the playoff. Too much $$ involved for an easy answer. Many of us are old enough to remember a time before there was a SEC championship game (1992)
I was afraid this new 12-team format would be something like four good teams and everybody else (especially the B1G would get a participation - you get in trophy) kind of thing. Considering how SOS is not getting its fair consideration (SEC) looks like that's how it's playing out…
It IS kind of ironic that Kirby is indignant when asked about the SEC championship game, while exclaiming that he and the team are focused on UMASS, when he himself was complaining about the CFB strength of schedule issue. 😁
While I enjoy watching college football, it has kind of become like the NFL to me and, alas, my interest is waning. Why?
1. NIL removes the "amateur" status and "team" sport, with players driving Lambos, while others are driving Hondas.
2. Players don't stick around in college as long as they used to; usually fore-going their Senior years to go pro.
3. The transfer portal makes it even more of a "me" sport and removes player loyalty to the team.
4. Scholarships no longer mean anything with NIL, so why not give that money to other deserving non-sports students?
5. With the playoffs, the outcome on who ends up where has become more SUBJECTIVE than OBJECTIVE.
6. It used to be that to play in the NFL was every kid's dream, now it is more about making a ton of money, while in COLLEGE!
