Texas aims for ‘better football ahead’ against Georgia in SEC Championship Game
ATHENS — Coach Steve Sarkisian believes Texas still has its best football in front of it, and it starts with Georgia.

Lots of back slapping coach speak but Texas has improved dramatically…particularly on defense. UGA pummeled their defense first go round. Tougher this game. Texas is playing excellent ball. UGA cannot start like a tortoise again. Not this time. This will be their toughest game so far. UGA is battle bruised big time. I have concerns about this game for UGA.
They beat a bad A&M team and that was due to poor decisions by the A&M staff. They have a weak schedule and benefited greatly from that. They have no wins over a current top 25 team. We have three. Heck, they did not even play any current top 25 teams other than us. They were supposed to beat us last time and we kicked the snot out of them.
So please, forgive me for not holding texas in the high regard everyone else seems to. WE… are the SEC.
Texas is a lot more healthy than we are and that is my biggest concern. The schedule has been absolutely brutal and NIL and the transfer portal has destroyed much of the depth we had in the championship years. To win we must have a clean game from Beck and the WR's must CATCH THE BALL. The defense must tackle better and force field goals instead of giving up TD's. Kirby will have the game plan to win but it all comes down to execution. Go Dawgs!
we just need the good Bobo to show up. Not the one who can’t scheme up any First half points
It always seems like Georgia is the "beat up" team going into these big games. Remember last year's SECCG with Bowers and McConkey hobbling all over the field? We can never seem to catch a break and be reasonably healthy during crucial times…Sometimes I wonder if Kirby works these kids TOO hard at practices to where they are much more prone to injury in games and out of them.
Like the line out of the movie Swing Blade “I like the way you talk”. But Seriously I Do like the way you talk !! If the Dawgs bring their A game they Can and Will beat TX even with all the injuries. It’s hammer down time !!! Go Dawgs !!!
We have some things going for us. We have played much much much better competition and we know how to win these tough games.
-We are trotting out the same defense as before minus Cristen Miller but now we have Harris at corner. Hall is back on the DL. Outside of those 2 it is the same DL. They are down their star LT.
-They do not have home field and all that non-sense. At a minimum we should have a slight advantage playing at the Benz.
-Lastly, the last time we played our offense played like garbage and Beck threw 3 ints. Beck looks the best he has all year. 11 tds and 0 picks last 3 games. No Etienne but Frazier looks just as good.
I like our chances as long as we don't go down by 2 tds in the first half. Our guys want that extra week off and will play their hearts out. Dawgs by 10.
I was worried about tn. Beat up, injuries and what happened! Oh yeah coaches 4th year. Best team he's had so he said.
Last time Texas was not ready for UGA's speed and physicality. They will be better prepared this time. The key to the game will be whether Kirby Smart finally acknowledges that this group of WRs that he assembled isn't SEC caliber. A group who generally can't get separation quickly on short or intermediate routes, can't get open down the field, don't make plays on the ball and don't battle the DBs. Throw mostly to the TEs and RBs. Pick your spots throwing to Lovett and Bell as they are the only ones who consistently make plays in traffic. Only throw the ball to Humphries and Young when they are wide open. Use Arian Smith on screens and reverses. Do that and UGA puts points on the board, keeps Texas off the field, controls the game and eliminates Carson Beck turnovers and other mistakes that gives Texas momentum and easy points. Do this and the only way that Texas wins is by playing a near perfect game.
However, if Kirby continues to choose to reject the obvious with his WR corps, Texas will have a 50/50 shot.
This is actually an excellent game plan… if only someone on the Dawgs would read it!
My only exception might be putting one of the new young bucks in instead of Smith. The big reason? The confidence hit Carson has increasingly gotten when Smith drops catchable balls for the umpteenth time. If you watched Carson’s face after each of Arian’s muffs during the GT game, you can see Smith’s drops are really starting to get to him, even more than any other receiver. To his credit, Beck never lost his composure, but you can just see how it exasperates him.
Other than that? Awesome plan @benzone !!!
Like most of these big games, ultimately the outcome will be decided at the line of scrimmage. With our sporadic line play this season and especially on the defensive side lately, Texas has the LOS advantage on both sides of the ball.
I predict Texas will try and bring more pressure on Beck to keep him off balance. We'll probably need quick throws, slants, and screens. We cannot give up big plays. Gotta stop Wisner and slow down their running game, forcing Ewers to pass. Hoping to see more use of Delp & company like we did against TN. Texas TE Helm is a weapon for them and may be their biggest playmaker besides Wisner who just seems to get better the longer the game goes on.
We're definitely more banged up than Texas this time around, but we've still got the playmakers to pull off another win. No turnovers.
As Dawgs are sort of thin at RB why not use A. Smith in that role ? Could always throw the ball to him on a screen pass. I think best of my knowledge that Arian is a good person. But goodness gracious he has clunker hands !!
SO Many times the ball has been thrown perfectly to him right on the hands and he drops it. I know he’s trying really hard, but we have to face the fact he’s a Liability throwing the ball to him in critical games/times. With his speed and properly planned he Could help at RB. Go Dawgs !!
@Kudzu
Arian Smith is the only vertical threat in the UGA program. If he isn't on the field, Texas will put their safeties in the box and blitz more often. That will mean less running room and more sacks. If Smith is on the field but Texas figures out that UGA is never going to actually throw it to him, that is even worse, as you are effectively playing 10 against 11 at that point. Screens and reverses are the best way to force the Texas defense to respect his speed while minimizing the likelihood that he will drop passes. I don't recall Smith dropping a catchable screen pass. It seems that he only has issues on other types of passes.
Actually, I think you're making my point here. EVERY opponent knows that Arian is unreliable at catching the deep ball (I tried finding hard stats, but couldn't; watched replays of three games though... it's a legit issue, and UT has better film than I do 🤣). Therefore, if he's in the game, they know he's likely there for just what you say: "screens and reverses"... so he's NOT likely to be perceived as truly a vertical threat.
I think we all agree we must have 1-2 vertical threats out on the field... but everyone, whether it be Carson or UT, has to believe they can and will consistently catch the ball 🤠
Every pass to Arian is a 50/50 ball even if he is wide open.
