Loser: Schuman. Time for him to move on or for us to get a REAL co-DC.
Kirby had to take over calling defense. That speaks volumes.

The reason that Jackson has so many tackles is because opposing teams target him constantly (more than any other UGA DB). He is then "in the neighborhood" to try and make a tackle and makes some. He also misses a lot of tackles. I saw at least 2 or 3 that he missed vs GT. He is an overmatched player in most SEC situations. He is a tough player that tries hard. "I wish I could put your heart in some of my players", Ara Parseghian to Rudy in Rudy comes to mind.

If you are listening to a UGA podcast you are going to hear a lot of accolades and few criticisms for UGA players. You are right that Jackson has been more active than Starks. Starks has virtually disappeared this season. Seems like a case of preserving his health for the NFL draft. Starks has also been playing a lot of STAR. When he is covering the TE the teams have been going elsewhere (usually to where Dan Jackson is covering). Jackson has been passable reserve player for UGA. Spell a guy here or there. He is not a UGA caliber starting SEC player. The fact that he starts tells you how bad UGA has missed on recruiting or how the TP has affected the secondary (Major Burns).

@99nout I have eyes I can see Jackson lower his head and put the crown of his helmet into the facemask of King. It gets into a grey area when the offensive and defensive players are both trying to get lower. Jackson could not get low enough to put his helmet on the ball. Jackson lowered his head and hit with the crown. King fumbled because he got hit in the face with the crown of Jackson's helmet. He looked dazed if not knocked out/woozy sitting on the ground after the hit.

I assume you meant Bullard vs Harrison/OSU? Nope that was a clean hit. Shoulder to shoulder. I said it when I saw it live.

I'll trust Kirby to choose the coaches. No oline coach would do a better job. Injuries pevent cohesiveness. Play calling? i'm sure some of the commenters would do a great job! DUH

JUst listened to another podacst with Aaron Murray, BEn Jones, Tavearras King and Knowshon Moreno. All but Moreno feel like Jackson is a NFL caliber player. Either special teams or put him down in the box. THey've played in the League. Sometimes it's not about the plays you don't make but the plays you do. If it was just about plays you don't make, Aaron Smith would be sitting on the bench.

Watch King's head snap back when DJackson comes in. When King's bottom hits the ground he reaches up and pulls his helmet back down on his head. I rest my case.

@UGADad20 I agree that Dan Jackson's coverage has been an issue, though I should point out that he, Starks etc. have been exposed because UGA's scheme requires a level of play from the defensive front 7 that UGA hasn't consistently been getting. This includes in the game against Georgia Tech where the front 7 made a kid who couldn't get on the field for Texas A&M look like Josh Allen or Tim Tebow. Also, am I the only person on the planet who seems to remember the announcers doing a replay that showed that Jackson DIDN'T commit targeting because Jackson's helmet missed King? In any event, the referees didn't see it anyway. The play happened real fast and King was trying to push into the line to move the pile to get the first down. When Jackson came around and hit King from behind, it was impossible to see the play real time. Jackson's hit on King was only visible via instant replay from specific angles. There were several other questionable calls in the game that benefited UGA. I don't know why everyone is focusing on that one. Also, the referees weren't out to get UGA in the game. If the referees call pass interference in the end zone against the Georgia Tech defender that outright grabbed the UGA TE on one play, for example, it would have been an entirely different ball game. Meaning that there were at least a couple of big calls that went Georgia Tech's way also. But the referees missed so many calls because of the nature of the game. It wasn't an easy game to officiate.

Back to Dan Jackson, you hate to criticize college players, even in this day of NIL. But … he is another guy who got so much playing time over the years because he reminds Kirby Smart of himself and of the type of player that Kirby wants in his program. It is great when "Kirby's guys" actually have above average SEC talent and skill. When they don't, well this is the result. Kirby's playing "his guys" is the reason why UGA's WR and RB recruiting fell off the map. Maybe the frustrations this season will finally force him to change.

Gonna go with the guy taking the shot on this one….

"He made a really good hit, put the helmet to the ball and it popped out" - Haynes King on Jackson's tackle causing the fumble.

Ryan Day lost the Michigan game because he was focused on Oregon the next week. He went into Michigan with a vanilla gameplan. He thought it would still work because Michigan has no passing game. However, here's the deal.

    1. Ohio State is still in the playoff.
    2. Ohio State doesn't have to play Oregon, who already beat them once, next week in Indianapolis. They get to take their time off starting now. They won't get a first round bye, but they are going to be the highest seeded wildcard team which will mean a favorable matchup in the first round.

So Day might be a "loser" but he is in a better position than most of the "winners" right now. For example, it is better to be Day right now than James Franklin, who plays Oregon next week, or Steve Sarkisian, who plays UGA, or Brian Kelly, whose victory over Oklahoma this weekend likely saved his job (for now). And this speaks nothing of the pair of ACC losers Dabo Swinney, who saw several key recruits flip from his program after losing to South Carolina, and Miami, who went from a top 5 team with a leading Heisman Trophy candidate at 3 PM on November 9 to missing the playoff entirelyif Clemson beats SMU. By contrast, while #fireRyanDay was trending all weekend on social media but the truth is that if Day wins a couple of playoff games all will be forgotten.

DIdn't figure I'd trigger someone on Dawgnation mentioning Ryan Day but I guess I did. There's already talk of Day losing his job because he can't beat Michigan for all his other success. THat's not me, that's just what's out there. Persoanlly I don't think he'll lose his job. He's the Mack Richt of his generation. He recruits well and he's usually always near the top. He has had more than enough talent to win the NC the past few years but just hasn't won the big one.

The way it's enforced, targeting has become a lot like holding in that you could probably call it on most plays if you really want to find it. To flag Jackson, and change the outcome of the game, because if you freeze it on just the right frame and zoom in, it almost kind of looks like he might have hit the runner with the crown of the helmet would have been egregious.

  • reddawg1reddawg1 ✭✭✭✭✭ Graduate

It was a center mass shot. King as all runners do when they realize they are about to get smashed, tucked his head downward which made it look worse than it was. No one is mentioning the shot to the head Lovett took that was a no call too.

@benzone You make a good point about the passrush. A passrush is a DB's best friend. UGA passrush has been kinda "meh" for most(?) of CKS's coaching tenure at UGA. UGA just had superior players playing DB most years under CKS. Passrush does not excuse all the missed tackles and bad angles on DJackson this year. Jackson is a walk on player that has had his moments. I said it last year that UGA was not a championship defense with Chambliss playing a big role. I said it this year that UGA was not a championship defense with Chambliss and Jackson playing big roles. They are fine (small) role players.

Not sure if it is the defense's priority to read and react first? Think Tom Landry's Flex defense in Dallas. UGA was successful vs TX with bringing more pressure than usual. When UGA fails to get pressure on the QB is when there are problems.

IF the announcers said that Jackson's hit was NOT targeting they were covering for the refs missing a call whether in error or on purpose. We only need to look back to the '23 SECCG. An AL 4th down "completion" to AL WR Bond (from Buford, GA) was a big non-call in the game. Did Sankey get greedy and think both UGA (going for a 3peat) AND AL make the playoffs IF AL wins that game? Sankey knew he had 1 team in. Why not gamble to get 2 in? Was worth millions to the conference. ESPECIALLY if Sankey knew in advance that '23 was Saban's last hurrah.

For you and @Stiffneck the proof is in the video I attached below. DJackson comes in with his head down at the facemask and neck level. CLEARLY the 1st thing that moves on King is his head. It moves backward NOT forward as a hit to the body would do. The play looks like a knockout in boxing match. The body is still and the head takes one on the chin and the head moves back. The player goes down the ball comes out. King taking the high road. Not sure he ever saw it or remembers it.

"Back to Dan Jackson…". I'd say you are right on your last paragraph. But that is a whole other topic for discussion. NIL making CFB into NFL Jr. That is degrading everything that CFB was. Like I said before, the NCAA should take the NFL to court to force the NFL to lift the age limit requirement for drafting. If a player wants to go to the NFL after HS so be it. BUT if you choose to play AMATUER football you play CFB under the old rules of your payment is a scholarship and stipend.

Regardless of whether you (all of you, not just @reddawg1) think King ducked his head or it "was a center mass shot" the rule says,

The NCAA targeting rule states that “no player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown of their helmet". PERIOD! "Players cannot lead with the crown of their helmet while making forcible contact. " That is targeting. Not like we haven't seen it before from DJackson.

@E_Roc I agree that nobody wants penalties to decide a game. But it is football and there are penalties on almost every play. To me holding and targeting are not equal. There is holding on most plays. Player safety demands that targeting be removed from the game. Two ways to do that. Training and enforcement.

To deny what you see with your own eyes in that video is the true definition of a homer fan. The 1st thing that hits King is the crown of DJackson's helmet.
