Georgia football winners and losers as Bulldogs win legendary SEC Championship game
Winner: Daylen Everette
Comments
Loser: Kirby Smart for going for it with one second in the half on an “asking the impossible” Hail Mary play rather than electing to go for the likely makeable field goal from a stellar kicker and seeing his starting quarterback being injured.
In retrospect, I believe Kirby would agree….so much for analytics…there is noway in heaven or hell that given our receivers are not the most consistent catchers, a Hail Mary gives better odds for a successful score than a Woodring FG attempt….food for though/lesson learned/file away…..just my "eye test" but I''d love to see Nate, rather than Arian run the fake punt play????……..How bout Cash or Dillon…….they take off plant, turn and pass back to receiver???? ….Oh well, a Back Yard Saturday QB can dream….
Really like Fowler’s call (in shock) at the fake punt.
With all our recruiting, is there no one who can run routes and catch the ball? Can't they bench kids who drop passes. Put in 2nd string, 3rd string, Water boy?
In the second half, I did find myself wondering if Carson Beck was on the sideline, thinking, "Oh, NOW you decide to actually catch the pass" after Stockton's throw to Smith.
He probably wasn’t thinking anything that petty, but it was an amusing thing that popped into my head.
gotta add to the winner category:
Kirby smart:
The previous experiences with fakes in that building haven’t gone well and to have the cannolis to call it again, bravo.
Also, Saturday opened my eyes to just how below average our wide outs are other than Bell. They could not get open, that’s not a coaching issue that’s an athlete issue.
One more winner:
Our offensive line in OT. Them boys were lathered up, reminded me of the line in the 4th quarter against Alabama in the ncg.
Go dawgs, you boys get ya some rest.
Maybe poor recruiting of wide receivers over the last four years has caught up with us.
Only Arian Smith was rated in the top 100 (overall, per On3) — and he surely was rated that high because of his speed, not his hands. Only three guys on the roster at the beginning of the season were even in the top 400.
We often focus on the WRs who overperform their recruitment. McConkey and to some extent Bell are great stories. Overall, though, there's usually a reason some guys aren't considered elite.
Next year, Talyn and CJ could begin to rectify that. And maybe we can get some top transfers who don't end up accused of hitting their girlfriends.
Meanwhile, we can rely on Etienne and the TEs to catch the ball. And we'll have to live with holding our collective breath when Beck or Stockton throws to a WR!
C'mon Connor: Our kickers were winners. Both literally kept us in the game. If either hadn't overperformed his counterparts, we wouldn't have made it into overtime.
I'm a broken record on this. But they re too often overlooked. They're two of the best in the country, and each had a stellar game Saturday (notwithstanding Thorson's injury).
Loser: 5 Star DL recruits that choose Texas over Georgia the Friday before Georgia wins the SEC over Texas. LOL
Hoping Georgia gets Texas again in the natty. 3-0 on them would be so choice.
Sure. And if the 60 yard attempt had been blocked and run back, costing Georgia the game, it would be so obvious that he shoulda tried the hail Mary.
South Carolina got shafted moreso than anyone else. THey were playing like a top 4-5 team at the end of the year which the committee says makes no difference. THe lost to LSU and BAMA by at toal of 5 points. Those two teams combined record was 17-7. BAMA' lost to Okla and Vandy by a total of 26 points. THose two team's record combined are 12-12.
Plus SC beat Clemson. Clemson lost to UGA and SC and narrowly avoided defeat to a 3rd SEC team, KY. OLe MIss losing to KY at home was their undoing, as was BAMA losing to Oklahoma like they didn't have a clue was theirs.
Winner: Gunner Stockton - Came in against the #1 rated defense in the country, with little real time playing experience, sparked an offense that had mustered a -2 yards rushing effort in the 1st half and on the game winning drive took a massive hit to his head. Stockton's run setup Etienne's final score into the endzone.
I'm sorry, but leading off an article in which you're lauding someone as a "winner" with "Kirby Smart admitted that the game’s MVP award should’ve gone to Trevor Etienne" and then following up with "Everette has never been the most popular player on the Georgia team" seems like the epitome of backhanded compliments. I think Daylen earned both the MVP and "winner" selections this week without the need to disrespect him (fact-based or not) after, frankly, saving our collective bacon last Saturday 🤔🙄🤠
I hate that Brett was injured and hope it’s not a season ending injury. It was curious that UGA substituted Ham for Thorson on the fake punt instead of the superstar punter Miller. I’m not sure of the rationale, but it does mean that Miller will preserve his redshirt this season even if he has to play in the next 4 games. Also, am I the only fan out there that was not lamenting Bama finishing #13? I wanted the SEC to have 4 teams in the playoffs, but really didn’t want to possibly play the Tide in the Sugar Bowl. Sorry folks, I just have this sick side where I love to see Bama fans and players depressed. Go Dawgs and good luck Colbie in court tomorrow!!!
