What we learned about Georgia football after the first week of the transfer portal
ATHENS — Perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that the developments regarding the future of the Georgia roster with the transfer portal have been slow.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed we don’t lose a productive player. So far our losses can be easily replaced from the portal or they open a spot for the incoming class. We had a fairly large recruiting class so I think this culling is good for the players and our program. The guys who leave will find better opportunities to play and we will find better players to take their scholarships. Go Dawgs and good luck to everyone!!!
Kirby has previously stated he wants 4 scholarship QBs. With signing Montgomery, that’s 4 so if he pulls another from the portal it shows that either he doesn’t believe in one of the current rostered players or maybe one has indicated he will be transferring. Now there is another scenario. It’s possible that with the proposed 105 roster limits he will need developmental players to replace the walk-ons
I don't understand the thinking behind the 4 quarterback concept ok I understand depth in case of injuries . They say it is for development ok but if your goal is to get to the NFL I don't think that the NFL is going to say "he really developed well in three or four years " but you got no playing time so what do they have to look at? Any other position you are going to play at least some. Just like Gunner this year he has been able to play in two games and that was only because we were so far ahead and even then it is up to Bobo calling what plays he got to execute. I personally don't like the transfer portal because I believe in commitments and the NIL I am liking less and less.
We've now got (4) QBs (possibly 5 if Beck decides to stay). Of course if Beck stays, others may leave. I'm not sure I understand going after one or two more mediocre QBs. ?? But we definitely need experienced talent at WR, and I wouldn't hate it if we picked up Justice Haynes at RB.
If Beck stays, Gunner may stay, but at least 2 other QBs will leave. Players want to play and they know they only have so many years of film.
The outgoing transfers so far aren't particularly damaging to next year and should be manageable through incoming transfers. It's too bad to see rising talent like Bowles, Jarrett and M'Pemba leaving, but that's to be expected in today's environment — especially when you stack great recruiting classes one after the other.
But the immediate concern is the playoffs. Will all the departing DBs in particular leave us vulnerable in case a CB or S goes down? We're likely to lose more guys over the next two weeks, which will make our playoff ranks even thinner.
It's a real indictment of the NCAA that, while they set up the tournament, they didn't adequately address the Catch 22 of transfers leaving before the tournament so that they could sign up for the next semester. It's unfair to everyone that the best teams are going to be competing in the CFB with incomplete rosters.
After the playoffs, the other shoe will drop. We could weather losing a Jordan Hall or a Rashada. But losing experience in places where we won't have a lot of experience next year (WR, DB, OLB) could be challenging. But, again, that's to be expected. The dynamic seems to be that we lose somewhat promising depth and gain experienced mercenaries, who can contribute but may not have the same potential.
OK right out front, I have Nothing against Beck. He’s a very good QB with potential to be great when he’s dialed in. As has been said many times his main problem is the players he has to throw to.
Now a little What If questions. What If Gunner comes out in relief in the Play Offs and Really just tears it up, and does really great ? And going a little further What If he helps the Dawgs win a Natty then behind Gunner then Beck decides to come back ? Would Beck just automatically be The Man ?
I think as best I know and have read here that Gunner is about as loyal to the Dawgs as you could ask. BUT if Beck comes back Gunner might seriously contemplate hitting the exit door. And he couldn’t be blamed for that as he to has a future to contemplate and plan for. Just saying. Now for me IF and I stress IF Gunner does really well in this post season, then I wish Beck would go on to the NFL. I’m a big Gunner fan. But Always Team First. Go Dawgs !!
I fully expect that any potential "transfers of consequence" that we might lose (if any) won't happen until we are finished with the playoff run.
I see Bowles had a reason to leave, he had people come in after him and get more playing time. To me that's the only reason you transfer out. But because you not willing to wait your time is crazy. Only a handful of players have left UGA in the portal and have had successful college careers. But the majority don't. Which means they didn't have what it took to make it at UGA in the first place. I really don't understand Jarrett and Mpemba move.... just wait!!!!
No one has really mentioned it as far as articles that I've seen go, but I wonder how much the new rules relating to the change in the amount of scholarship (and non-scholarship) players a team is allowed is affecting some of the movement. Someone in the discussion boards here did say something not too long ago about some players potentially losing their scholarships for those coming in, but I haven't seen any published material on it.
UGA fans were pretty confident coming into this season in the face of the most difficult schedule in CFB. With good reason.
UGA had a returning QB that lit it up last season. Played at the highest level played at QB at UGA since Stafford. He was playing behind an OL that returned 4 starters.
Guess what? All of that is gone next season. Except the most difficult schedule in the country as the SEC runs it back. QB gone (yes the injury clouds this issue). 5 OL starters (Greene not Freeling) gone.
W/o bringing in a Cam Ward or Dillon Gabriel type QB transfer, ALL the '25 "eggs" will be in the GS basket. Roll the dice. No better time to be focusing on the '24 season.
As for JHaynes (AL RB TP) he will end up at tOSU. tOSU is losing its top 2 RB's and they will pay more. Pretty predictable.
"As for JHaynes (AL RB TP) he will end up at tOSU. tOSU is losing its top 2 RB's and they will pay more. Pretty predictable."….
UGADad20, My common sense tells me the same, I was just hoping Justice was a little more than a money grubber…..Cryin Day and the Bucknuts are going to get beat by The Vols…which will prove again that you can buy the best buy money never provides The WANT and DESIRE…..Cryin Day will be The Jimbo Fisher of The B1G…..just not as wealthy.
Keepin my fingers crossed for Tech WR Eric Singletary….
I believe that after this year Beck realizes that if he came back for a final year, a starting position is not guaranteed, the competition will be tight, especially is Gunner balls out…..his INT's and lower competition rate from 23 can easily be blamed on poor WR play….and he didn't have that much of a terrible year….CB is ready for the NFL and I believe that the only question is the severity of his elbow injury…..if he heals up and looks the part in the combine he'll go first round.
becks elbow may not be ready for the combine if surgery is required. But agree that his performance was not as bad as the stats lead you to believe. The receivers led the nation in dropped balls and the OL had plenty of issues on its own.
