@Redpantsdawg
Great post-I had forgotten about free Willie Martinez-I assume it is the same guy from the Mark Richt days circa 2008ish.
UT was like us, banged up, and people were consciously ignoring that they only had 1 top 20 win this entire season, Alabama at their own house.
Their win over OU meant nothing as they were beyond terrible this season.
But they made it in due to only taking 2 L’s, instead of the dreaded 3 loss moniker that would have sunk them.
IMO this will never be “fixed”, the CFP, due to one simple thing: too many teams.
Keep it at 8 or less, then deal with the whining. And to know that they are going to expand it to 16 or as many as 20 by 2026 gives me a headache.
I won’t watch it except for the final 4 or 6 games when it gets to that, just being honest. It will be watered down and the pundits will just be spewing BS on every channel and radio wave to get ratings 🙄. Injuries and wear and tear and NIL will slowly but SURELY take a toll after 3-5 years of this at more than 12 teams, and then we will look back and reminisce about the “good ole days “ of 2016 to 2023.
The complete money grab by all parties involved are taking a lot of the joy and camaraderie and thrill of competition out of what is ultimately just pure entertainment-but this nonsense is going to push people into their “caves” of comfort with the team and conferences that they grew up being a fan of-instead of reaching out to each other in looking forward to wanting to see “their” team play on a stage against a team from another conference that thinks they are the 💩 and blasting them off the field.
Making these college student athletes practice and play 3 to 5 more games on top of a 12 game schedule is absurd and short sited- that is almost an NFL schedule now prior to them expanding to 17 games a couple of years ago.
It’s silly and overdone.
Drop the mic Mike is back!!
Another great article Mike that touched on a lot of things. I do think the CFP Committee will need to reevaluate the seeding, and I think the Conference Champions should NOT automatically get BYEs. The highest ranked teams should get the BYEs. Now this begs to question then whether it is worth playing a CC game. Maybe not. Maybe the SEC adds a 9th conference game and the top ranked SEC teams make the playoffs. And SOS definitely needs to be a bigger part of the equation going forward. You are right - The 12 BEST teams are not in the playoffs. However, having said all that and listening to the complaints about the 1st round uncompetitive games yesterday, I will say that you typically see that kind of thing with playoffs whether it be March Madness or the 24-team FCS football playoffs (which were awesome to watch).
I'd love to see the regular season start earlier to alleviate the December crunch. I don't see why we have to have (3) home games next season against Marshall, Austin Peay, and Charlotte. Get rid of those ridiculous games and you can fit in a 9th conference game and still end the season earlier. Sorry, they are a wasted scrimmage, a potential unmotivated team loss, and frequently lead to injuries.
Ohio State looked dominant. They also have the type of WRs that we can never seem to land. And both those guys - Smith and Egbuka - are on the same team at the same time. Nico is not an elite QB at all and was completely out of his element in that game. And I knew he would be. I expect Stockton to do much better in his first start than Nico did against Ohio State. But the Dawgs do have work to do.
The Bulldogs went on to breeze to a forgettable 65-7 win over TCU in a CFP title game
FORGETTABLE?
Mike is back at it being Mr. Gloomy Gus
The receivers are subpar, the secondary has issues in coverage, and despite elite talent on the interior offensive line, there’s not much of a power run game to speak of.
How the hell did we win 11 games then?
disagree with#11. This time of year the FCS can have some great football.
Add on to Take #6:
Georgia is below average all around and will get the snot beat out of them
Vote down all you want….how about disputing it. Because he ripped this team.
You're confused. Flinging accusations around, not knowing what you're talking about. Look out for all you want, I have no interest in making this a political discussion. Like I said, the rare times I ever mentioned it were in response to people like you who were already dragging politics into this football site, a month and a half ago now. Speaking of which, you randomly bring up politics in response to my posts about the playoffs, and you say I'm the one coming out of left field? Get some sleep, or maybe sober up.
I'm totally fine with the 12 team setup. If it prevents what happened last year from ever happening again I'm totally for it. Sure the games turned out to be duds but that happens. Still better than watching basketball.
Ohio State has the highest ceiling of any team and I expect them to beat Oregon and Texas and be in the NC game. Who will they face? Not sure if Georgia will meet them but it is possible. Notre Dame, Georgia, Penn State are all about the same this year. Not sure it matters though. The winner of the Oregon OSU game will be NC.
Would love for Georgia to prove me wrong, but first Gunner has to prove he can complee middle 10-20 yard passes under pressure. Stetson did it but our wrs were a lot better back then. Anythings possilbe I suppose but after 13 games of seeing the drops and bad route running I doubt it changes now.
Looking ahead: Georgia and Ohio State in CFP…..IMO. Cannot see Oregon over a supercharged OSU.
in re #6 Mike…..You got me thinkin about Chemistry 101…..The basic fact is: "all matter is made up of elements", Dawg matter is made up of Defensive and Offensive elements….Atoms are the building blocks of elements….11 atoms comprise each element….Chemical reactions involve rearranging atoms: ….. Gunner Stockton is the rearranging atom whose time has come…in the past, sub par this, sub par that, maybe so but come Jan 1 in Nawlins the chemical reaction that The Mighty Virgin experiences will turn that "pot-o-gold" into lead and lead to a Fleeing Irishman….Talent, Depth, Coaching, and Desire will be the difference resulting in a DAWG DOMINATION and a compounding of Irish HURT!
Then don’t watch because it is obvious you haven’t.
Even with the admitted issues, this team still fights and finds a way. Anyone that says something $tupid like the University of Georgia will get the snot beat out of them has absolutely no clue who the University of Georgia is. No downvotes needed because your comment is recognized as being bad enough without them.
Great article Mike. Keep up the good work !! I want to address what I believe or at least I hope is a tiny segment of our fan base. There are a very small group of Dawgs fans that seem prepared to blame a playoff loss directly on Gunner.
Unless he’s just utterly s t u p I d with the ball I feel that would be grossly unfair. The young man hasn’t had very many Real Game opportunities. And even in some of those they wanted him to just hand the ball off. Even though it’s three weeks to prepare, for a game of this magnitude that’s not much at all.
I guess Kirby has his reasons but when a game is very well in hand I don’t understand Why he won’t give Gunner, Pugs, Rashada some opportunities to Throw the ball not just hand it off.
If we’re all honest Gunner’s opportunities have been extremely limited, the other QBs even less. SO unless Gunner is just plum s t u p I d with the ball I think it’d be very unfair and unjust to pin the loss on him.
It’s gonna take a whole TEAM effort including the Coaches doing their job to beat ND less alone other teams. That’s how it’s Supposed to be in Every game. Speaking of which Kirby said that the INT Gunner threw in the SECCG was on the Coaches as they were not on the same page.
One thing I am Extremely Confident of Gunner will give every fiber of his being to help the Dawgs to try to post a W. Gunner is a fine young man and I think he will make the most of his opportunity. All we can ask of him is give his total effort and he’ll do that. Go Dawgs !!
" Not all conference champions should receive byes"
Why do people keep saying this? ACC champion Clemson didn't get a bye or a home game. They lost on the road to at-large Texas yesterday.
I got no problem giving the ACC Champion a "Bye". It's the BIG12 and others that I question. Boise State?? Arizona State??? C'mon. Boise St., probably never should have been ranked as high as they were, to begin with and we know what Arizona State is...."The best of the rest.". Lol
Not exactly the "Best 12 Teams"....nor, "The Best Four", is it?. But, that "Final 2" will more than likely be the 2 teams, most people projected, earlier in the season. Don't let the trees obstruct your view of the forest....It's still gonna be UGA vs Oregon. Lol
OSU could slide into the Championship under Oregon. But, I doubt it. Lanning and staff...[and team]...have had over 3 weeks to prepare and heal. Just like UGA. I expect that game, between UGA & Oregon, to be the Clash of the Titans.
UGA vs Oregon......Toss Up!
Go get em Big Red. Fill your Sugar Bowl with Oranges. Bring it home!
Mike Griffith - "The receivers are subpar, the secondary has issues in coverage, and despite elite talent on the interior offensive line, there’s not much of a power run game to speak of. Quarterback Gunner Stockton is a good story at the moment. But to become a legend in Stetson Bennett lll form, Stockton will need to hoist the big trophy — and to do that, Georgia needs to play at a level it has not yet shown over a four-quarter span."
And this is the thorn in the side. We know about the drops. That's the thing everyone spots right away. WRs can’t separate as well. But our rushing offense isn't good… it’s not because of the plays we call. We don’t block well. At all. We don’t get to the second level. Where exactly is the elite talent on the interior offensive line? Pass offense isn't really any better. A lot of Beck's woes was the line not being able to hold up. There's been game after game where the OL has under performed - mainly in the first half of games. Doubt Notre Dame going to wait around till we get our act together.
