A good offensive line is 90% of having a good running game. You can have Todd Gurley, Herschel Walker, and Nick Chubb in the backfield, but with no blocking, they aren't going anywhere. The importance of studs on the OL is imperative to the passing attack and the running game. You are correct, Vetdawg—"an elite offensive line can cover a multitude of flaws elsewhere on an offense".
Our offense has passed for roughly 8,000 yards the past 2 seasons. THat's up there with any team in the nation as far as he Big Boys are concerned. We were just 340 yards off of last years total receiving production. And yet, we don't have any receivers to work with according to some. Carson BEck is junk some say. And yet, we had almost 4000 yards of receptions- this year, go figure.
Oh, and our backs are trash, as some say. And yet, last season we rushed for 900 more yards than this season with Dajun Edwards and Kendall Milton both of whom went undrafted. You can'make this stuff up. Does anyone on here believe Etienne will go undrafted? Or how about Nate Frazier? Want to wager some money? Our backs are more talented than what we had last year. But somehow the backs last season racked up 900 more yards rushing. What's different is the O-line play.
Some say that our offensive downput this year is due to not having Ladd McConkey. Dillon Bell has virtually the same exact receiving yardage as Ladd had last year. What about Brock Bowers? Our TE's togther have the same amount of yardage Brock had last season. Yes, BB and LM were injured plagued somewhat but we still averaged 40 points per game. JUst merely talking from a production standpoint.
We just couldn't knock anyone off the line of scrimmage this year, 4.2 yds per carry, our backs had to cut back against the the way the run was supposed to go in order to find an opening they could use their skills to juke a guy one on one, make him miss and pick up a few yards. THat happened even against the lesser teams. Got to be fixed.
It’s not complicated. It’s football. A good OL plus good running backs equals a good running game. A very good OL and great running backs equals domination. All that is obvious. Additional factors are play calling, execution, and more than three or four running plays. It would also be nice to see the QB under center more for both running plays and play action in the passing game. Running on first and second down and passing on third and 6 is not difficult to defend. We need fresh thinking on offense. If those of us watching the game can predict the play call 75% of the time the opposing defense can probably do it 85%+ of the time.
We had an OL consisting of 2 highly rated 4 star (Freeling and Fairchild), 3 mid 4 star (Greene - who should be playing guard not tackle… Tate Ratledge who hasn’t been healthy for 1 whole season his entire career… and Micha Morris), 1 low 4 star (Truss - who might be the worst of the bunch), and 2 3 stars (Bobo and Wilson).
We don’t have an Andrew Thomas, Broderick Jones, Amarius Mims, Isaiah Wynn, Isaiah Wilson on the roster anymore. We were averaging 1 OT in the first round for the last 4-5 years. There isn’t a single one even close to that on the roster this past season.
Yep your right as rain. Totally agree. I’ll add in technique to and that comes from Coaching which it seems the O Line coach doesn’t know how to do.
As usual I’m having my memory issues ( So frustrating) but the Dawgs totally and I mean Totally shut down the big ole RB from Wisconsin who Before playing the Dawgs had been awesome and then after the Dawgs resumed. He went on IF I recall to do well in the NFL. You and other Dawgs fans know who I’m talking about but I’m having severe brain cramp.
Any way I don’t think it was on him that he failed as you could tell he was giving his all, but the Dawgs decimated his O Line. Went through like Swiss cheese !! It is Absolutely Imperative to have a good O Line for Championship level success. I say good as a minimum, but then you better have an Elite across the board Defense.
If you have a Premier O Line along with Premier skill players on O you can win a Natty. Ironically the Dawgs had one of each in their B2B Nattys. One where it was primarily the Defense, the other where it was primarily the Offense. The battle is won or lost in the trenches.
I’m Very concerned about Both sides of the ball in the trenches entering the 2025 season. I can only Hope Kirby will shore things up with the TP. Go Dawgs !!
Aha !! I found it Ron Dayne, he went on to win the Heisman. Dawgs held him to only 36 yds. rushing in the 1998 Outback Bowl. But again I don’t think He was the problem. The Dawgs were penetrating his O Line relentlessly. They shut him down like a valve !!
Thus it doesn’t matter how good your RBs are if the O Line can’t open holes for them they will have limited success. There are Extremely rare exceptions like Herschel Walker, Emmet Smith etc. But those are astronomically rare RBs. Same for the QB if the O Line doesn’t protect him at least Some he’s gonna have only limited success.
Bobo is far from the best OC but he’s also far from the worse to. The up the middle of the line run plays that he calls so much, imagine if you had a truly dominate O Line. Well those plays would probably work pretty good. P.S. Dayne was 5’10” and weighed close to a whopping 249 lbs. as a college RB. His nickname was The Wrecking Ball !! But the Dawgs wrecked him that day in 1998
How about stop pulling out a RB that's in a rhythm and gaining positive yards, not to be seen for another quarter in the game.
This repeatedly happened the first time under CMR when Bobo was calling the plays.
His words are empty. He's knows what needs to be done, he just abandon's the run and gets pass happy.
I have a different take on Bobo than some do. Here's the way I see it. At the start of every game Bobo(the Dawgs) come out with a game plan to run the ball and to exert UGA's will along the O-line and invariably it fails. If you listen to both Kirby and Bobo before a game , it's always the same message, "we wont to be physical at the point of attack both defense and offense". More often than not we were able to do that on defense, but offense not so much.. So, that's your game plan is to establish the run game and mix in some passes. Any coach is going to say that, right? But when it just doesn't work, then drives get cut short. How many 3 and outs do we see at the beginning of most games? A lot. THe other team's defense gains momentum and if they score and we can't or have to rely on field goals Old Mo swings to the other team.
Well at some point in the game you have to scrap the idea that we're going to dominate them at the point of attack and you fall back to what you can do. Pass the ball. Put the ball in Carson's hands and usually, Lo and behold we start scoring and moving the ball better or vice versa. Now because the other team has to respect the passing game more than in the 1st half a few running lanes start to pop open.
Roughly 62 percent of our offense came through the air. That's why we were able to come back from first half deficits. When your best laid plans fail, do what you do best. Pass the ball. Bobo wasn't "pass happy" by choice. He was forced into it. It's sort of backwards thinking and it would definitely cut against the grain, you'd have to think like a Lane Kiffen but I thought our best way to attack the other team(especially the better more physical teams up front) was through the air. Make them react to the pass and then mix in the runs when you got them reeling. At times it seemed we just kept beating our heads against a brick wall, over and over again and why? Because of a philosophy, that only works when you are physical at the point of attack.
One final thought. Sometimes rushing totals can be somewhat deceiving, 2-3 long runs for say 20-30 yards can get you to 100 yards rushing , but it doesn't mean you controlled the line of scrimmage or exerted your will on the other team. If the other team stops you cold on the other 25 rushing attempts.
Good comments redddawg1. You can’t exert your will with the running game if you don’t have a dominate and very physical O Line. Most of the time but not All of the time they were pretty effective in pass pro allowing Beck to play his game.
But Notre Dame beat them badly in run game opening holes and pass pro. Freeling was the worse. But there were several times they bull rushed right up the middle of our O Line. Not a good thing.
I don’t know what the problems are but they sure better get them fixed else we might be looking at limited success and No chance of a Natty.
I’m also concerned about our Defensive Line coming into 2025 we’re losing what few decent players we had. Leaving us I think with only three maybe four with decent amount of experience. The battle is won or lost in the trenches.
