Georgia basketball must bounce back quickly with NCAA tourney goal still within reach

ATHENS — Georgia basketball faces the equivalent of a full-court press with its remaining SEC schedule, an NCAA tournament appearance still within reach, even after taking a hit on Saturday night.

This article has more positive stuff in it than anything written about the football team. NO, Georgia basketball is not capable of beating a ranked team on the road, much less a top 10 team. They don’t look like a better team now. The team that beat Kentucky and OK was better than they are now. That version of this team hasn’t been seen since. Blow out losses to every ranked team on the road. An inexcusable loss to Arkansas on the road. That pathetic loss last night at home with questionable offensive performances and no TO called with 4 seconds left to set up a play. I hope they can turn it around starting this week, but based on what we all have seen so far, it probably won’t happen.
@David1 No way I'm calling timeout with 4 seconds left —- give the defense time to set up, steal the inbounds, turnover on pass …. so make a pass, catch it, and then get shot off? I'd rather have it in the hands of the best open-floor player on the team who already has 23 points on the board. I don't know many coaches who would call timeout with 4 seconds left in that situation — not sure who came up with that, but it's not sound.
with Coach Mediocre Mike at the helm the only bounce back I expect to see is more mediocre coaching and excuse filled post game interviews. Hard to believe this clown made millions at Florida and is fleecing Georgia as well. Dude should sell used cars.
@MikeGriffin, Texas A&M time out with 9 seconds to play. Wade Taylor off a screen makes WINNING 3 pointer over MIZ with 2 seconds to play…off of a well designed play. Something Mediocre Mike has proven incapable of at UF and now UGa. Mediocre coaches should not be earning millions pretending to be an SEC caliber coach.
Thanks for the coverage, Mike. But just give up on the whole, Tournament stuff. Even if the Dawgs made March Madness, we would just get embarrassed by a tiny team from some tiny conference…
That’s why you’re a journalist and not a head basketball coach. The turnover screams that he should have called a TO.
Disclaimer - I have never been a “head basketball coach” and suspect most of the commenters haven’t either. I agree with Mike Griffith. We rebounded ball with 8 seconds and would have had roughly 4 seconds after getting ball into front court and calling time out. This team has struggled in bounding ball against good pressure defense all season. Demary had one of his best games yesterday, and with miss state scrambling to cover anyone he could pass to it seems sound to let him take it to hole and hope he makes it, gets fouled, or creates an opportunity for someone else who winds up uncovered in transition. Mike White was also correct when he said that there were multiple times when all 5 players didn’t run hard enough to get back on defense and gave up easy points. Inbounding with 9 seconds to play in front court is obviously a totally different animal than inbounding with 4 seconds.
If there were multiple times where all five players weren’t hustling to get back on defense that falls back on the coach. Speed can’t be taught but hustle can. That falls DIRECTLY on the coach. Obviously players aren’t willing to play hard for him. Can you imagine Kirby when a players goes lazy and doesn’t hustle? Go Dawgs
I actually have been a head basketball coach. Mike Griffith must talk to losing head coaches about not calling TO in that situation. I’ve seen games won and lost by teams calling and not calling TOs so it’s a matter of opinion from coaches, but the turnover screams that the TO should have been called.
We look like a good NIT team. Win that and then it's a start.
I can’t believe I’m doing this but….I’m going to defend Mike White. He was right to not call TO. He had his best guard who was having a great night & who is best at getting to the rim with the ball. Why would you call TO & let the defense set up ? And deep down White prob knows like the rest of us the he & his staff are terrible coaches & couldn’t draw up an open look to save his life. The highest probability opportunity was to let Silas take it & score or be fouled. Bob Knight and always played it that way. And he could draw up a play if needed unlike Mediocre Mike. Of course it’s poetic that given Mike Whites disdain for ball handling Silas dribbling off his foot.,,but that’s another subject for another day.
