This all well and good, but I do wonder why Robinson wasn't more of a contributor this past season. Yes, I understand that he was a freshman, but he was — SUPPOSEDLY — the second-best freshman in the country, and the best freshman cornerback. And it wasn't like our secondary was lights out. I'm not saying that he should have played, I just wonder why he didn't do more. I truly hope that he wasn't overrated, and that he will be a breakout star this season. Go Dawgs!

“He is so much further along in terms of assignments,” Smart said. That says it all. You can't have a guy at CB, on a team playing for a championship, who doesn't know what he is supposed to do or where he is supposed to be on every play. Go back and look at the coverage breakdown on 2nd and 26. UGA's D is known for its complexity.

In addition, UGA CB's play a very physical style supporting the run. ERIV was not physically ready to play SEC CB during his 1st season. Hopefully he is ready to play this season.

UGA needs a shut down CB to be a championship caliber defense.

It surprised me to learn recently....that UGA has 19 former HS recruits...ranked #1 at their respective positions by On3, Rivals or 247Sports.…at 11 different positions.

That's probably why some of these "top recruits" have to work so hard and be patient to see the field. The competition for "playing time", must be brutal. And, if you survive to be drafted.…you've been through the fire.

Which, I believe, is why former Dawgs in the draft are valued so highly by all teams not named "The Falcons". They're tested winners.

IMO....it's not unreasonable to expect to have to bench surf during your 1st and 2nd year. These guys...except for Bowers...know that, going in. Lol

I thought he was going to be a starter his first year. The second highest rated player in the country among true freshmen. Our pass coverage was not great. Difficult to believe he isn’t better than Harris or Humphrey. Humphrey is gone. If our defensive scheme is too complicated for a player with his advertised talent, maybe we should simplify the scheme. The best players need to be playing. How hard is it to cover your man in man to man? How complicated is zone coverage? I’m not buying it is that complicated.

I know Smart values loyalty, upper class man, and patience, but sooner or later he’s gotta let the young pups loose! The TP will make highly recruited players leave for playing time.

We better hope Kirby never has to "let the young pups loose". Lol

If he has to do that....It'll be because there's no "talent plus experience" in front of em. You can't manufacture or replace "experience". That takes time, no matter, how talented you happen to be.

I am not sure the defense is that complicated. What is complicated is getting all 4-5-6 DB's on the same page reacting to the offensive play as it unfolds. All of those guys have to know their responsibilities and be in the right position or you have Davonta Smith running wide open for the championship winning TD. Or Arian Smith getting behind the entire OSU D for a game changing, game saving, quick strike TD.

If you run straight zone or man to man good teams will scheme productive plays against your D. CFB offenses are designed to create mismatches and open players. There is no comparison between playing against HS offenses and players and CFB offenses and players.
