I know we’re in the era of paying college athletes and it’s not going away, but this is ridiculous. Paying that amount of money to a high school prospect that MIGHT help your program? Come on, man! High school athletes that are college prospects are absolutely no guarantee. They are really good in high school because most high school players are not good. Most don’t play in college at all.
This is heading towards a very dark path that will eventually lead college football and others top sports to implode. The love of money is the root of all evil according to the Bible and college sports will eventually prove that in the near future.

Notable that the last three Top-5 QBs we signed— Eason, Fields, and Vandagriff— didn't even stay in the program.. And two of them never even became starters. Massive risk doling out that kind of dough in today's NIL, especially when there's no contract or legal hook to make then stay to earn their keep. Sheeze. Go Dawgs!

NIL must be fixed so that no team has a financial advantage like Texas oil money for Texas and Texas A&M or Nike money as in Oregon's case. I think I read somewhere that Georgia is fifth or sixth in potential NIL money or thereabouts. We've already seen the impact of Texas oil money when Justus Terry, a long-time strong lean to Georgia, changed his mind at the last minute when Texas offered a higher contract and he signed with them. Fixing the NIL lottery will be hard, but a good start would be to establish a "salary cap." Next, there has to be an baseline for certain positions and a maximum that a freshman can receive, plus a bonus system for winning a national award i.e. Heisman, et. al. Finally, there must be a contract that states a signee must remain at the school he signed with for two years barring some kind of legitimate hardship. Two years is plenty to know if a player will fit the mold and earn significant playing time. Lastly, there should be a "no compete" clause in all NIL contracts, whereas a player cannot transfer to a direct rival of his current team unless he's a graduate player. Some other things to consider are performance initiatives. If a player comes in and loafs or gives a half-assed effort, then he will see a loss of NIL funds until he tows the line. NIL is out of hand, and the schools with the most cash assets are going to keep winning the arms race unless the playing field is leveled, and that begins with a "salary cap."

NFL2! The NCAA or the institutions involved must put limitations on this madness. I can't help but look at top signed recruits these days when they say "I just love it here at Hometown U"—just knowing that their "love" was nothing more than a money grab, where the "place to play" wasn't the important thing—it was "how much can you pay me"? I don't think any of us disagrees that today's college athlete should have a few coins to spend while on campus, but it's gonna get ****(think of Carson Beck) if we let this atmosphere of greed continue to escalate.

    1) How much will it take to sign Curtis?…..when this is your first question, you've already lost…even if he signs, it's all for money…..NOT THE ONE AND ONLY REASON YOU SIGN ANYBODY to become a DAWG….."Is he a ""GEORGIA" guy…..is his top priority to become a DGD, Is he willing to work, to sacrifice, to be patient in order to be developed into an Elite SEC player and thus become an Elite NFL prospect….I'd love to see Curtis become a Dawg, but only if he's a "GEORGIA GUY"….reddawg, you are spot on…..given adequate attention and development, Millender has the potential to become a championship caliber SEC QB and it's not just because he has the skills, but He's a "GEORGIA GUY"!

I agree and the only starter (Eason) had an 8-5 record as a starter and that’s with a win against Appalachian State when he was injured early in the first half…..so he really was 7-5 in games that he impacted. I’m with the rest of you guys and hate all this NIL malarkey. I guess we need to $uck-it-up and accept the fact this isn’t going away. I’d sure hate to be in Kirby’s shoes and have to balance the NIL budget distribution. P.S. But I’d be more than happy to have his salary. Go Dawgs!!!

All you have to do is look at what the Buckeyes spent last season on the TP and retention- around $20M, and most of that went to retention - not to new TP players. The Dawgs don't have the luxury of 3 years to train, develop, and coach players any longer. If Kirby is lucky, he might keep most of his elite players 2 years now. I bet that's probably the average now. My belief is you've got to build your program mostly off the backs of RETENTION and that is where you focus your money. Recruit the best and retain. Until guys get in the door and show you their true talent at a college level, you're taking a big risk putting too much money into one basket out of high school. I'd rather spend that money going after an experienced Will Howard kinda guy to make my team - not a guy out of high school.

With Georgia and QBs, it's a two headed monster. You've got to get elite WRs willing to come play for Kirby too. With the best group of receivers in years, I think this season will be a real test to find out if we've got an offensive game plan and real elite QB that can feed these WRs enough to keep them happy. The Buckeyes certainly did even as they still relied on their running game as well.

Concerning Curtis, the Dawgs shouldn't get into a bidding war over this guy. Make a good offer but rely on your relationships to seal the deal. Otherwise, let him walk.

BTW……that $ sign on my comment where I said “$uck-it-up” is an “s”. I can’t believe it was blocked when spelled correctly. I find that funny because the AJC had an article yesterday quoting Nick Saban and they printed the other “s” word and I don’t mean snake 😉. Go Dawgs!!!

I’m sure there is more to an NIL deal than just annual money. If an agent is that limited in their ability to package a deal then they shouldn’t be an agent. Probably tiered and incentivized to exceed initial asking amount. Only a starter should qualify for those numbers.

These Million dollar NIL deals are too much for 18 year olds. Does the NCAA do anything anymore? Perhaps schools should get together and create a new League guide. I like the contract for money idea.

With all his accomplishment on the recruiting trails and on the field, I don't remember CKS ever won a HTH battle for a QB recruit (Lawrence and Manning coming to mind). So, I'm not optimistic on this one. Our record for developing QBs is also a bit suspect.

Very good points! I hate to bring Bobo into this, but if he isn't "viewed" as a top-tier OC, I'm afraid that will be a liability against Georgia regardless if we can match the $ amount for Curtis or any other 5 star offensive athlete.

Finebaum has already weighed in on the matter - right or wrong - the perception out there is that Kirby could get a much better OC.

I've also read that UGA and Oregon are finalists for Immanuel Iheanacho. Is Searles a liability in this department as well?

I've gotta get back to work after lunch but if our fan base argues about this, I'm sure recruits look at it as well.

  • MontanaDawgMontanaDawg ✭✭✭✭✭ Graduate

@Loranwhaddayagot…I don't know about Bobo. Yes, I do think we can do better, but I don't see it happening unless Kirby sees a real stud OC come available that could justify him dumping Bobo - and he certainly won't do it until after 2025. Now if Bobo can't turn around our offensive performance meaningfully in 2025 then I do think his days are numbered - friendship or not - after next season. Searles' test will be this season as well. Can he field an elite O-line with the talent we've got? I hope so. He's had multiple chances and the results have been mediocre.

Concerning Immanuel, he appears to be a real powerful, big, stud OT. Penn State and Maryland are also pretty hot after the guy and have made offers. He's going on a Maryland visit next month and the campus is just around the corner from where he goes to high school. He may want to stay close to home. We'll see.

On Friday, 14th, if it is nice and Spring like, someone should take him up in front of Park Hall around 10:00AM and sit on that wall by the sidewalk so he he can see the fairer side of UGA. He'll lock in in if they do that.😏
