Mike Whiteâs Georgia basketball NCAA tourney season âlaunch padâ for more success

The Bulldogs played Auburn close to even in a 70-68 at home loss that had Bruce Pearl sweating, and then threw a 1-3-1 zone at the Tigers on the road that kept Auburn perplexed before they pulled away late for an 82-70 win.

A definite improvement over the past several years of an embarrassung UGA basketball program.ive seen a lot bash White, I don't remember either Crean, Fox, Ron Jirsa or even Tubby Smith ( who bolted from UGA at the 1st chance he got) winning 15 home games in their tenures. Hugh Durham was the only real, dedicated basketball coach UGA has had in many, many years, other than White, yet Durham still couldn't win 15 home games either. Sure, White lost several games they shouldve won, but, so did a lot of coaches at much better basketball schools than UGA. Even everyone's darling Auburn (grossly OVERRATED) lost a few games with most voters coach of the year at the helm, in Bruce Pearl. If you want to talk about an average, mediocre head coach, look no further than these 3. Their names should come up first in every discussion about mediocre UGA basketball coaches ..Tom Crean, Mark Fox and Ron Jirsa.
He’s made improvements every year… so far. For this to continue next season, he needs to win more than 20 games, win at least one game in the SEC tournament, and make it to the sweet 16. However, I’ve seen enough Georgia basketball since the beginning of the Durham era that makes me pump the brakes on thinking that scenario will even come close to happening. I’ll continue to pull for the basketball Dawgs, just not getting my hopes up.
Go Dawgs!
Getting GA HS basketball players to “come back” in state would be tremendous.
Getting then not to leave in the first place would be a miracle.
There is a ton of basketball talent in the state (primarily Metro Atlanta), so there really is no reason not to have recruiting success.
I read this headline....and, thought to myself..."Self...I thought so, too. So why does a guy, that is set to make a real leap in White's Program...Demery.…decide to enter the TP? Is he really transferring?...or, just testing the water?".
Demery's move was a head scratcher...especially, since he basically QB'd the UGA offense to an NCAA birth. And, the future was bright for both him...& UGA.
Don't get me wrong....Demery can and will be replaced. But...why? Doesn't make any more sense, than Beck opting to go to Miami or Fromm electing the draft, in 2020. Lol
Very surprised and proud of the way the Dawg's basketball ended the season. Great news about all the records being broken.
But what does a leader and star like Demary entering the TP say about what's going on behind closed doors? Does he not believe in the program? Is there friction? Would he simply rather play for a Duke or Florida who have proven their success?
I'm not going to judge anything yet, because this season could simply be a one-and-done. Let's see if White can get this team better from here. Hopefully, this is the floor of the program now - not the ceiling.
15 wins at home…over powerhouse programs like Tn Tech, N Fl., Jxvle, Grand Canyon, Buf, Ch So, SC St…paint me impressed. Lost in all this meaningless hoopla is the fact that Mark Fox averaged almost14 wins a year at home and13 of his 14 first year wins were at home. Thru his first 3 years (Fox2.0 aka as) Mediocre Mike ‘s improvement pace barely measures up to the original Fox1.0. But hey, he has already won as many NIT games as Fox did, so there is a glimmer of hope…
@Gramster You forgot Georgia beat Kentucky and Florida at home and also beat No. 2 seed St. Johns — Mark Fox was mediocre to the extent UGA never broke into the Top 25 his entire tenure. That seems hard to do. Nice guy, but not dynamic enough for the SEC. Time will tell on Mike White, but progress has been made.
With the loss of UGA's two best players on the court, it is back to square one again. Hard to see a better team than this year's next year. Note that Florida's basketball coach, available when UGA picked Price, has taken the Gators to the Final Four this year…
Price has improved the team each year. At this rate, we should be able to break into the Sweet Sixteen in about twenty years from now…
How many NCAA wins since White got here?
First of all let me just say that I really enjoy your articles, @MikeGriffith. I recognize that a prerequisite for your job with Dawgnation is to paint the program and it's mediocre coach in a positive light. If you wrote bad stuff or were a realist about Mediocre Mike, he probably wouldn't give you any interviews and would ignore your questions in the post game pressers. I get it, being a homer comes with your job. If I were cashing a Dawgnation paycheck I'd do the same. But since I'm not…my point is that in 3 years at the helm our UGa b-ballers have improved a paltry 2 games in SEC play, have won 3 games in the NIT, zero in the NCAA, 1 game in the SEC Tourney…and our best 3 players have hightailed it out of town on the nearest portal train. Meanwhile his successor down in Hogtown has coached the Lizards to a Final 4 in the same timeframe. And if you're into xplicit pix and stalkn, I hear he's pretty good at that too!
Don't get me wrong, Mediocre Mike was a much needed captain to steady the boat that slick car salesman Crean left stranded out on the sea of desperation. And Mike White is a classy person, a decent recruiter and good role model for his players, I respect that, but let's face it, he has to be one of the least creative Xs and Os coach I've ever seen. He will get our program back to where it was under Mark Fox at best. If that's good enough for you and many other Dawg fans on this site, so be it. Personally I think UGa should be better than that, especially with the all the talent in the peach state. Anyway, Cheers Mike. Keep those great articles coming, mi compadre. I do appreciate you.
Oh, and by the way griff, Mark Fox defeated 3 top 20 teams as well his first year., even with a 14-18 record. Oh, and he won his first SEC Tourney game that year as well.
I don't remember Fox making 1 single ncaa tournament as Head coach.. not 1. So, White is FAR ahead of what Fox did at UGA. Funny, The average at best Fox is now an assistant coach. If he was as good as you think, he'd be a head coach somewhere…and not an assistant coach..
@gramster..And never made a NCAA Tournamet, so all those numbers and stats are irrelevant..
You really are missing the point of my sarcasm I suppose. I think Mark Fox was quite the mediocre coach, hence the Fox1.0. I think Mike White is just as mediocre, hence the Fox2.0.
As for your other point, Fox made the NCAA twice - 2011 and 2015, both times losing in the first round (just like Mediocre Mike).
