After 1 game against an outmanned Marshall, it’s way too early to project UGA in national championship against anybody. Love what Gunner did running ball, but those plays may not be there against SEC defenses and we have to have chunk pass plays down the field to back linebackers and safetys up and we didn’t see that Saturday. Coaches may have intentionally kept it vanilla against Marshall, and probably will against Austin Peay, but we don’t know yet if Gunner can push it deep down field and we don’t know yet it receivers can get separation. Last year they couldn’t which led to Beck forcing the ball into receivers with resulting interceptions and drops on closely contested balls. Playing these patsy teams early is good “practice” but doesn’t tell us much.
lol look at last year.The dawgs got handled by Bama and Ole Miss and nearly escaped tech but still won the conference. It’s only the first game.
Agree with 76junkyarddawg, these "patsy" games are good to instill some confidence in the newer guys, and give lots of players the opportunity to say they actually played at UGA. Gunner can run a liitle bit which is good when he gets chased out of the pocket he can sometimes extend drives or at least not just have to throw it away if no one is open.
Sadly, the Marshall team was able to put pressure on him multiple times, which doesn't bode well for us against the better SEC schools. I didn't like we still couldn't pick up a 3rd and 1 running it for all the talk about improving the run game.
Some of the teams I saw over the weekend had RB's that could get hit by a couple of guys and still mange to fight and pickup positive yards. I'm not sure I saw that with UGA on Saturday. THere was some slobber knocking going on between some teams and I'm questioning if thats our identity running the ball, for all the talk?
My projection of the Dawgs toting a Championship Trophy, come January...has absolutely nothing to do with last weekend.
However....my projection that UGA may have it's best and most cohesive Offensive Line, in years....does have something to do with what i saw Saturday.
Imo.…Smart and Bobo have created a running game that will support the passing game....and, vice versa. You have to have speed...as well as size....on the line, to make that happen. They have that.
I saw a stud offensive line, from TE to TE...playing like an offensive line should. That hasn't always been the case.…no matter the opponent.
Like i said....just watch Micah Morris in action....and you'll spot the work being put in by the others. I was inpressed with the way they worked together. For a change. Lol
I don't have to tell you...That's where it all starts for the offense. Barring injury....the Dawgs are in pretty darn good shape up front...on the sides...in the back....over the top....all 'round.
My expectations were validated by the way that line played.
