Where things stand on the Georgia football offensive line as it faces tough Tennessee test

Georgia had five plays at the goal line just before halftime of Saturdayâs game against Austin Peay. Given the Bulldogs are the defending SEC champions and Austin Peay comes from the FCS ranks, Georgia shouldâve been able to get the yard it needed to go up 21-3.

I'm tired of hearing, year over year, the excuse of injuries as to why we get pushed around, despite having one of the best recruiting records and rosters in modern college football these past several years. Now if other teams have better players, no injuries, and /or deeper benches, it might make sense. But they don't, so it don't. Maybe we'll find our mojo— our passion fire, and energy— on the road. Go Dawgs!
"Yet it proved unable to do so. Now this week, Georgia’s offensive front takes on a deeper, more talented and bigger Tennessee front."
If the OL couldn't be compelled to overwhelm and dominate Austin-Peay by shear desire and instinct last week, what will be the motivating factor this week against Tennessee? Can this group be conditioned to overwhelm and dominate their opponent in just one week? Can the desire to overwhelm and dominate (if they actually have it) be concealed so easily as it was last week? These players have all of the necessary size, speed, and talent to do what they need to do. There is a glaring leadership problem that is diminishing the effectiveness of this OL room. I, and so many others on this forum, have written about it numerous times going back to last year and the problem seems to persist. I'm hoping that we will see a major improvement starting this week and on an impressive trajectory for the remainder of the season and beyond.
GO DAWGS!
Freeling is not injured, what's his excuse.
How do our offensive line injuries compare with those of teams similar to ours? If we have more OL injuries than other teams, why?
My major question about this team is, and has been for a while, especially including last season, the OL. I wonder if the OL coach is up to ****. Seems to me we used to have great offensive lines and we weren't so prone to injuries in that position group. Did things change in the Injury Department when we had a coaching change?
Why not address questions like this?
Go, Dawgs!
@JimWallace...we went through these same kind of injuries last season on the O-line. We struggled all during the season...poor running game and variable pass protection. Here we go again, but this time we have even fewer truly talented experienced players on the line. They've held up okay so far, but it's been against lowly competition. That goal line stance against Austin Peay was an atrocious performance. Hope we never see that again.
All teams get injured, so you have to have a talented bench. As I've said ad nauseum, the Buckeyes had a more banged up and disjointed O-line the first half or more of last season. Yet, they persevered and got the right group of guys together finally to help lead them to a Natty.
Injuries can be a reason for sub-standard performance, but it cannot keep being used as an excuse. We supposedly have the most talented roster in the nation. We will see if that is true.
I keep hearing the phrase “ not up to our standards “ , unfortunately for the last few years the current OL line play is the standard. While I do not claim to know the absolute answer it does bring another phrase to mind “ to keep doing the same things over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity “. Good luck this weekend.
Injuries on the line are pretty common. Almost impossible to avoid. Whoever is on the O-line needs to step up. Last season the offense finished with an average of 124.4 rushing yards per game which ranked them 15th out of 16 teams in the SEC. Right now sitting at 239 rushing yards per game but haven't played any SEC teams till now. Better be able to run the ball well because if we have to throw it every down it will be a long day. Last Saturday the O-line got beat on stunts a number of times. Gunner was able to avoid the sack but would imagine that can't last forever.
Searls. That’s where the vast majority of the O Line woes are. For that matter the majority of Offense problems as a whole.
IF we see significant and Consistent positive play from the O Line I will Gladly come here and publicly apologize for my harsh criticism of him. I’d LOVE to be wrong. It’s not our players though they do make mistakes. It’s the technique or lack of that falls on Coach Searls.. in spite of him I think the Dawgs win in a hard fought battle. Go Dawgs !!
We need a new O-line coach.
I think we need the same 5 guys to play more than two series together before we can make any definitive statements.
Living here in Knoxville (for 40 years), the narrative for the fans, and from the team on the radio is that UGA isn't the physical team they've been in the recent pass. They are also pointing to the O-line in particular for not being able to punch it in against AP.
O-linemen, as a group, are usually lunchpail, tough-as-nails, salty if not nasty dudes who not only welcome but thrive in the physicality of the job. I sure hope all this talk of their softness serves as bulletin board material, gets big-time under their skin, and they literally come out swinging in Knoxville. I'd even applaud a non-consequential penalty like mauling after the whistle, just to earn a little respect. Go Dawgs!
"Khummel"—-Unnecessary Mauling—I'm with ya!
Dear God....please let em go into the game thinkin' this is gonna be a Bulldog Lite Team. Lol...they have a rude awakening!
