Money corrupts. Big money corrupts absolutely.

Yes, NIL is ok, but it has taken away the ability for Kirby to get all those elite game-changers he used to stockpile. He has to pick his battles, but time will tell to see how it all plays out.

there should a set amount across the board. Throwing out a figure of $1mil that any player can be offered and they sign a 2 yr contract where if they leave they sit out a year. I can’t understand why NCAA can’t come up with a formatted plan or something similar. This would put all on equal footing

because every rule ncaa has thrown out has been challenged in court. They’re toothless. It’s their own fault for dragging their feet on this for so long. 25 years ago they should’ve let players be compensated from jersey sales, have autograph shows, etc and probably could’ve put in some rules around it. Toothpaste is out of the tube now and their control of college football is rapidly waning.

And kids that will blow every penny of it , ease up and end up on the practice squad at best.

It's almost become a silent auction. These kids families or agents just put up a bid sheet and highest bidder wins.

“You’re starting to see a little bit less focus to make it there because they have a huge distraction, I would call it,” Smart said. “I can fly to Miami this weekend. I can do this. I can do that. I can go buy this extra car. I can live extravagantly, which human nature is to relax when you’ve made good money and access.

“You’re seeing kids that probably four or five years ago would have been first-, second-round picks not turn out to be picks at all, and it’s just sad.”

Beyond the rest of the debacle of NIL/Transfer Portal (free agency), the above statements hit hard, and are in my mind the most salient. KS understands human nature, especially young men. He is seeing more money may equal less hunger and drive up front, and may ultimately hurt them in the long run both financially and with regard to character building. Strain and struggle are part of growth, and can set people up for later accomplishments. But hey, ESPN et al are happy, so there's that.

I certainly do not have all of the answers, but the current situation has irrevocably changed the sport, and in some coaches eyes has changed the the young men involved it. My passion and interest is (sadly) waning, as is that of many of my friends and colleagues. I probably sound like the old man yelling at the clouds. I do miss what it was, or what I thought it was. Perhaps someone will find a way to improve things. It would be in the best interest of the young men to do so.

    As always, Go Dawgs

Edit: sorry if this posted twice, technology is outrunning me.

@dirtroaddawg this is really well written and I couldn't agree more.

I just got done reading Kirk Herbstreit's book (whether you're a fan or not, I'd recommend it... I learned a ton of what really goes on behind the scenes at ESPN, etc.) and he talks about something I both get and admire: "choosing resilience". He likewise laments what NIL and the TP are doing to college sports (not just football) and worries that short-term money and a lack of commitment are creating more young men that will struggle later in life, whether they make the pro-level or not (the vast majority won't).

I think, sadly, you and he are right :/

Recruiting is not about relationships and development now. It is about money. That has hurt UGA recruiting. Probably more than most teams. It was why Saban got out. There will be new rules around NIL. Whether they level the playing field enough to get back to relationships and development remains to be seen.

There is no such thing as Name, Image, Likeness. It is pure “Pay to Play” and nothing else. The players are paid a salary in a deal less restrictive than a professional contract, where an athlete can play for four schools in four years. School loyalty is rare and, in general, a thing of the past.

NIL is a joke and a disaster for college athletics.

Georgia fans complaining that other teams can buy players now like Georgia used to illegally. That's just rich. Back to reality for you guys, Alabama is going to wreck you Saturday. By a lot

Maybe yall can crash a few more cars afterwards like you're prone to doing up there
