Third down shows just how the Georgia defense has fallen: âCost us the gameâ

Comments
.
Ok, the defensive performance, especially on third down, was just depressing to watch. I'm not here to defend it. I do want to say, though, that the penalty on Robinson was just plain incorrect. The pile was still moving and the whistle didn't occur until after he left his feet. If jumping onto a pile is a penalty in and of itself (I'm honestly not sure), then ok. But that's not what they called.
And yes I realize it didn't affect the outcome. I just find it very odd that it was ruled and is being talked about like it was a late hit after the play, when that's very clearly not what happened.
The defense is failing in spectacular fashion to begin games (e.g., Aguilar 14-14 200+ yd passing in the first qt, Bama starting 8-8 on 3rd down coversions). Aside from the game at Texas last season, when was the last time UGA didn't trail at some point in the first half against a P4 opponent? Each game seems to reflect these deficiencies in unique ways like we saw last night. Sure, the Dawgs get everyone's best shot to start the games, but that can, and should, work both ways. More often than not, the Dawgs seem to be losing in preparation before the game even starts.
totally disagree with 3rd down conversion costing us the game. Bama didn’t do anything in the 2nd half. Bad coaching calls cost us the game. Kick the FG to tie and give it to the defense
well it got them 21 points in the first half. Just stop a couple of those third downs and they likely only score 7 or 10.
I was shocked to know that we have not sacked anyone in three weeks.
There was zero pressure on the QB yesterday that even gotten close to a sack.
It is stunning, if not embarrassing, how teams with the same bye week always seem so much bettered prepared than us with the extra time. That's clearly on the coaching, not the personnel. Do Dawgs!
I’d like to see cks start calling the defense, circa’ venables at oklahoma.
I can think of 7 individual plays/players, as well as a couple of coaches, that whiffed on opportunities to do (or not do) what would be considered "routine" for elite talent… and they didn't. Upshot it was a collective and completely inexcusable failure, both sides of the ball as well as on the sidelines, that blew this game. Go Dawgs!
This is also my beef. UGA is already out to lunch in the first half of most games? No defense to speak of.
Jumping on to a pile like Robinson did is illegal and was correctly penalized as unnecessary roughness. We already had 5-6 players who had stopped Simpson's forward progress, and side judge was coming in to spot the ball. Chris Fowler and Herbstreit were correct to call Ellis out for "losing his mind" because it was so flagrant. It is dangerous "pee wee league" play that you don't expect to see from a college player. If you go back and look at video Ellis could have been called for targeting as he clearly launched himself, led with the crown of the helmet, and struck an Alabama player in that scrum in the head. He was highly recruited, but he has a long way to go get anywhere near the elite level of d back that we have had in the past. He has gotten torched in both of the conference games to date.
And missed tackles. He's not in high school any more, where he could wing it and depend on his superior skill. He's got to hunker down and dial in, become a film addict and far better student of the game, really up his combined knowledge and technique. At this level, football is no longer a game, it's straight-up a profession… with the $$ these kids are banking, they need to become serious pros fast. The good news is I'm optimistic Mr. Robinson has the smarts and emotional makeup (along with his natural physical skills) to make this leap pretty soon. Last night was not a good look, but hopefully an incredibly valuable education and inspiration to be better. Much better. Go Dawgs!
By the time he left his feet, forward progress had not been stopped, and the whistle had not been blown. The number of players involved is irrelevant; masses of 10+ bodies from both teams chugging down the field has become a routine sight since that rule was changed a few years ago. And I don't know how any attempt to spot the ball could be considered a factor at that point when the action in question is a player jumping onto a pile of bodies covering the guy who was holding the ball.
Like I said, if jumping onto a pile is an automatic penalty, then fine. But again, the call and commentary were all about how "late" it was, which is just false. In the end, it doesn't matter. I just find it weird is all.
Kirby doesn’t have a problem with that team from last night. He has a loyalty to coaching friends problem. On offense, good buddy Bobo and sorry Searels need to be fired today. The play calling was horrible. We saw nothing we saw vs tenn. We gashed them on big run plays, then start throwing the ball instead of using what works. The O line is atrocious and is getting worse as the seasons and this season go. Searels wasn’t a good O line coach under Richt, and he hasn’t gotten any better. Also, personnel on the field in critical play situations is ridiculous. Why have a freshman receiver running that route in the biggest game of the season so far when we have 4 stud receivers ahead of him? On the failed 4th down drive, if Kirby is planning to go for it if the gain yardage on 3rd down, Cash Jones shouldn’t be on the field. Bowens or McRae should have been in there, or use a QB sneak. Since they went so fast, they ruined the chance of the 3rd down run by Stockton to be reviewed where a lot of people think Stockton actually made it. I don’t have a problem going for it on 4th down in that situation, I just have a problem with the play call.
On defense, Kirby needs to beg Muschamp to come back. Yes, I know he and Kirby are friends, but it’s the only one of the staff that worked out. Schumman is consistently showing he’s not capable of running a premier college defense. He should take a head coaching job if one offers him.
A former Georgia coach used to say that we just have to get better, Ray Goff. Now don’t start thinking that I’m saying Kirby is like Goff, just stating that Goff used to say that.
" The Crimson Tide finished the game going 13 of 19 on third down. The 13 conversions are the most ever in a Georgia game coached by Kirby Smart.
Going into halftime, Alabama was 9 of 12 on third down and held a 24-14 lead. What is perhaps even more frustrating for Georgia is that it put Alabama in a lot of third-and-long situations. Only two of the 12 attempts were three yards or less.
Yet despite facing obvious passing situations, Georgia could not bother Ty Simpson. The Alabama quarterback was not sacked on the night as he completed 24 of his 38 pass attempts for 276 yards. He threw for two touchdowns and ran for another. "
That sums it up nicely for the defense. Just plain BAD…record breaking bad.
BUT, Bama didn't score another point in the 2nd half, but we STILL managed to lose.
HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE ONLY BEING DOWN 10 POINTS GOING INTO THE 2ND HALF?
So, now we turn to the offense which made too many mistakes, left points on the field, and missed too many opportunities to put points on the board.
SO, the blame for yesterday is as much the offensive issues as the defense. They both STUNK.
